I reckon it's more that this is the first time in forever that England have been able to mould the midfield around Gerrard rather than have him competing in the same area of the pitch with the likes of Lampard. The players around him in midfield this tournament aren't exactly world class, but they're efficient enough to cover the ground that needs to be looks after and give Gerrard free reign to pull the strings.

Many people said Stevie was over the hill so you have to give credit to Roy for choosing to build the team around him. Most people because of their allegiance to club teams will never give Gerrard the credit he deserves.

Cracking player and has had a really good tournament.

Starting to think England 2-1, no idea why haha.

As for Gerrard, dont like him for obvious reasons but respect him as a player and can be quality as seen in this tournament. Id take Gerrard over Lampard any day.

For sure.

Must be infuriating to be italian and watch your team happy to sit and defend a 1 goal lead. Even against shithouse ireland they sat back even though they needed the win to progress.

Surely Engerland are due a peno shootout win

Very true. You don't need world class players, you need a team that works well together and covers the whole pitch.

England for years suffered from not having anyone on the left side who actually played on the left for their club, it was a fucking joke. Plus we had Gerrard and Lampard trying to play in the same position. And Emile Heskey upfront *shudder*

Greece won in 2004 with no world class players at all really. But bugger me they played as a good team.

Also nice to see Ronaldo through to the semis, and he's taking the Portuguese team with him which is nice.

Currently i see Ronaldo as better than Messi cos Messi has never stood up in a major tournament to date (though he's got tons of time to do so!)

The Italians were fucking packing it against Ireland - at no point did they look comfortable with their lead.

The minute I saw Mario warm up I knew he had a goal in him. And what a goal, perfect example of play the ball and not the man. O'Shea was all over him and not even looking at the ball and Mario burried it.... his and Welbecks are my favs so far

2 brilliant players that shouldn't be compared.... they've got different sets of skills, strengths, weakness etc

Goal meant nothing, they were going home regardless and its easier to play like that with nothing to lose IMO. Welbeck and Marios goals were critical in getting their team over the line

Yeah.

Still time to unravel and capitulate.

I would hate to be in a team that went 24 games without a loss, then lost in the first knockout game since 2010.

Yeah locked in for Brazil 2014. Will buy a package straight away when they're released through the Fanatics or Football Australia. That's if it makes match ticketing a whole lot easier.

If you miss this one then you're pretty much screwed, as fuck going to the following two World Cups

Spoiler:

We booked it all separate but it was in Europe and we know polish people who helped us so it was a no brainer. But for brasil I'd prob do a package as you won't be ripped off it it's a reputable operation. We met a few lads who payed over 1k euro for accommodation and ended up staying in a dump miles outside the town. Others books a campsite that was closed down before they got to it so you have to be careful.

It also depends on how far apart your host city's are. Gdansk and Poznan were a 4 hour drive which was hard with hangovers, but great being in a convoy of 200 plus campervans fanging it on the motorways. Brazil is huge so I'd try and get your internal flights locked in before going.

Match tickets we got off friends who play football at a high level as clubs get allocated certain amounts. Touts were charging over 400 euro a ticket... UEFA changed 70 on their site so get those locked in too.

See you there! It's the best fun I've ever had. And yeah, fuck those fanatics. They'd be the first to get set upon for being mega fuckwits
It's over you BASTARDS!

Well that scoreline could have been a lot uglier. Was surprised Germany essentially rested Gomez and Muller. Fark reus looked good. That German side is going to be amazing in 2-4 years. Good luck to anyone against them.

ITM meet up...

Uefa's analysis graphics depict him as a static blob, but really Milner's blob should be blurred with motion lines, reflecting an approach that basically involves embarking on a series of unrelenting sprints from box to box, like a man very stubbornly doing lengths of a swimming pool while a water polo match goes on all around him.

fuck the Guardian have some good writers.

Just caught the replay of this morning's game.

I think Germany could be a bit vulnerable - their defence is shaky (Boateng and Badstuber aren't all that great), and they're wasteful up front (they won't get that many chances against the likes of Italy and Spain). Still, a pleasure to watch - that chance that Ozil hit straight at the keeper early doors would have been a wonderful goal.
