Given my family is of Norman descent, I do find it funny that Celt's and Saxons get lumped in with our historical douche-baggery in modern times. In fact everyone always says Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Celt when talking about white British history but given the Normans actually killed over 90% of the British nobility when they invaded pretty much anyone in a decision making position in England after that was of Norman descent.

I don't think that is necessarily fair, even in a governmental sense, nor true. A couple of things: 1. All published polls have support for marriage equality at about %60 and growing. 2. The NSW government legislated adoption for gay couples (supported by Kristina Kenneally, a passionate Catholic, and the then Opposition Leader, Barry O'Farrell).

What's pathetic and conservative is the way Gillard and Abbott are handling the issue.

Rather than taking the issue to caucus, and voting on it in private like every other issue Labor is supposed to deal with policy-wise, Gillard has put it to a parliamentary conscience vote where she knows it is likely to be defeated because... Abbott is acting like a Laborite and going against Liberal party convention by not allowing a conscience vote because he fears it would get up.

It's cowardly and cynical politics at its worst.

The comments section of the daily rag down here (The Mercury) makes me feel sick thinking i share oxygen with some of these people.

I see gay marriage as a formality. But it will take a generational change before we see anything. I think a compromise can and should be reached. Perhaps, in the mean time, we should allow gays to use disabled parking spots.
