Barca players applaud Alba signing

Barcelona's players have given new signing Jordi Alba their seal of approval, with David Villa, Pique and Xavi all speaking of their delight to the media.

Jordi Alba of Valencia. Barcelona youth player Jordi Alba returns from Valencia

Alba, 23, has been drawing plaudits for his play with both Valencia and Spain this season, and has now completed a €14 million switch to Barcelona, after a lengthy pursuit.

The Barcelona players, many of whom are long-term team-mates of Alba with the national side, have been gushing with praise for the move.

David Villa told Mundo Deportivo: "I speak regularly with Jordi. He strikes me as a good guy and he is a spectacular player that had always played as a winger until (Unai) Emery moved him to full-back and he has been incredible.

"He was also surprised at his performance because at the start he didn't like it a lot, but now he is happier as a full-back than a winger. He has spectacular offensive movement."

Pique said: "He has the Barca level and the quality to play for a big club. When we faced him he always seemed very good to me but here in the national team he is flying. He is a fantastic player. He defends well, attacks even better, knows when it is necessary to maintain his position, goes forward when it is the right time and can cross and shoot."

Xavi added: "He is a spectacular footballer and ten out of ten as a guy. Moreover, he is a local boy, he was raised with Barcelona, he is competitive, aggressive, very good defensively and sees the game very well. I have seen him play a lot and he is prepared. And when you put him with better footballers, he will be even better."

No doubt that Alba is a great attacking player but don't Barca need some more defence orientated players to make them a more solid unit ?

Why? At the end it's all about scoring more goals than your opposition.

Fuck it, hopefully next season they don't play with any genuine defenders or strikers, and just play with 10 midfielders.

I had this long winded post about them needing to improve defence but in reality they only conceded 29 goals in the league last season. Hardly bad at all.

So NUFC in a race with Borussia Mönchengladbach for Luuk De Jong. Really hoping we get him. Class player.

Also some rumours that we've agreed to the £5m fee for Douglas Teixeira. If that one is true, we'll have one of the best defences in the league. Bloke is a beast.... bit of a question mark over his temper but look at Tiote and Ben Arfa since they've joined us.

Fingers crossed both sign.

Indeed.... also seen some rumours about us chasing Junior Hoilett. I thought he already signed with the Germans but it looks like that wasn't true.

Vurnon Anita is keen to join us but just not sure whether we'll agree to Ajax terms.

Wenger really strikes me as the kind of guy who shows up at Coles half an hour before closing to buy all the meat that goes off in the next day or two for half price... Kind of like his transfers

Ease up..... before 2008, City were rummaging through the bins behind Bakers Delight every afternoon.

I heard Spurs are going Peri-Peri and signing shiploads of Portugese players - the name I remember was Moutinho and Vaz Te.

I also like how NUFC are signing lots of players, knowing that they won't be able to keep 1/2 of their 1st XI. I think with AP though, they'll challenge.

We'll probably lose Demba Ba for peanuts... which is a loss but he can be replaced and peanuts is still more than we paid for him.

Aside from that, we're looking pretty solid. None of our stars will go for cheap so if clubs like Chelsea want to pay ridiculous $$$ for guys like Ben Arfa, awesome.... more money to build a stronger squad.

Can Newcastle compete with the same guys next year? I think last year was a case of a very good year mixed with luck with all the big teams around them struggling. Everybody is going to know how to play them this year and they won't be underestimated.

Arsenal are looking good , Spurs might be bringing in some top players to a good squad & Liverpool should do better also.

With the same team plus a few additions, we could be top 7 again. I don't understand how we were lucky?

The fact that our squad cost fuck all to build has people underestimating the talent we have on paper as well as on the pitch imo. Look at our squad next to Pool or even Spurs last year..... isn't a HUGE gap at all.

Newcastle will have the same team as last year, plus the guys that are coming back from injury (Steven Taylor, Sammy Ameobi, Sylvain Marveaux), plus the signings (expected as Luuk de Jong - striker, Vernun Anita - winger, Mathieu Debuchy - right back, Douglas Texeira - centre back) to reinforce the squad for the extra games that will be played in the Europa league. I don't expect us to do better than last year, I'm hoping for more of the same. we will struggle with the extra game load of Europa league, depending on how far into it we get.

Not while Fergie is here imo. Did what he did with last year's young squad with Vidic, Kagawa and hopefully one or two more to come in should strengthen. I personally dont see why any other teams will be much better just yet ( early doors!).

I hate to say it but if Arsenal's squad stays fit (lol) then they can challenge imo. Maybe a little more squad depth would be good.
