I love Brighton. The seaside vibe, heaps of arts festivals/events, community living, good scope of music scenes, the ability to walk from one end of town to the other in under an hour (I’ve not once caught a bus in Brighton), a pub literally on every corner, Queens Park in summer, London is an hour away on the train and Gatwick is 30min, large gay population, café and bar culture in Kemp Town and The Laines, a mix of hippies to corporate types, cycling to work along the seafront each morning (but not so great during a gale) - ahhhh, feels like home

But Brighton living comes at a premium. The large student (home and international) population and limited jobs means work is harder to find, accommodation is sought after, wages are much lower and the cost of living and rent is close to London standards, and people in Brighton can tend to be a bit clicky. But, if you can find your feet – it’s well worth it

so we ended up getting that joint in Aldgate

had a place sorted within 24 hours of landing. pretty happy with that~!

sorted out our bank accounts as well. pretty easy, just had to register with MyOE who gave us a letter saying that they vouch for us, then go to HSBC and set up the account.

now for the jobs.

any recommendations on the best way to tackle it?

I'm registered and put my profile up on these sites:
Ranstad
Clarke James
Talent2
Job Serve
Total Jobs
Monster
Job Site
Manpower

any other major ones i've missed?

also my LinkedIn is up to date. I've just been setting all these up and then searching for jobs though there

loving it so far!

Fuck HSBC.

All the dicking about I've had to do with their useless staff and stupid cards/website/app has made any benefit redundant.

the fact that all id heard was how difficult it was to get a bank account set up, to have it all done within a week of landing i was pretty impressed with. and their staff was great from my experience. maybe i got lucky.

I would advise you to look for some of the specialist recruiters or go direct to companies. Recruiters in the UK can be ****s, and the big job boards attract them like flies to shit.

Good luck with the job hunt.

Dalston is the new Shoreditch, Gentrification is forcing factors northern its less expensive, edgier and more personal, when the Eastern weblink goes in its gunna growth, then Stokey will be next. Interesting vivid place tho its excellent.

Depends, who're you supporting?

(It's being shown on ESPN from 4:30am. Might have to go for a scout around to find a pub open for it.)

It's a shit airline but Ryanair have some cheap flights for Christmas markets on. Weekends leading up to Christmas as markets start 30th Nov to 25th Dec, so could be an option and spend the actual day in London. We have booked up 5 weekends as only 30£ return to most places. Hotels.com has a mad sale on too.
Eurostar is not to bad if booked in advance? I am doing Brussels markets on them.
Otherwise we just did Berlin. Riga next weekend. Zurich. Copenhagen. I booked all of those to have a look around in.

London has stuff on in Trafalgar square, check the net. Sales on the 26th are brilliant. Otherwise the Barbican has the rain room.

Not in London but nearby joints like Windsor, Bath, Oxford etc would be great to visit if it snows. Why not get a train from KX to Paris/Brussles/Amsterdam?

Moving to London in the summer and have no idea what neighbourhoods to look for a place in...any suggestions? Would like something with a good vibe, not too too expensive, safe and convenient.

Also where can I start to look for jobs? It's international development so a development consultant, field worker, or project design & development at an NGO. I also have a bit of experience with environmental management as well.

Northwest London! My brother lives there as well as a few mates. 15-20min by tube to central London with frequent trains, good rent, decent pubs and generally good housing.

Anyone know the cheapest options or can recommend any good shipping companies to send things back to Aus when moving back home?

Leaving London in July to backpack for a while and will have a fair bit of excess stuff that will need to be sent back to Melbourne.

Advice would be much appreciated!
