Just placed my first order with Vinomofo in about 8 months. Bought the Soul Growers 2009 GSM that, after applying my $20 credit, cost $79. $13 for that wine including delivery is a dead-set steal.

I sampled the Soul Growers range at the Melbourne Food and Wine festival a few weeks ago – amongst a thousand other wines on the day – and was massively impressed with all their stuff. Definitely a label I will be keeping an eye on going forward. Very reasonably priced too given the quality.

Honestly, I couldn't really dig that Soul Growers GSM (I'm pretty sure I had an '09 but may be mistaken).

Too warm and over-the-top for my liking. But yeah, 13 bucks is a steal. My old workplace used to flog it for 15 and that was at super discount.

HOT TIP (for you cheap khunts): Rockbare Tinderbox Shiraz 2008. This thing has fucking balls, and you can usually find it for like 8 bucks if you do it by the case. I give it a massive big ups. It's their entry level series and it's better than their standard one (can't remember the name of it)

So what's the problem with Vinomofo (aside from the many emails?) I've just bought 4 cases in the last couple of weeks and have been pretty happy so far.

personally have found their selections rather uninspiring lately. that and i'm tapped out from buying elsewhere.

in good vinomofo news, they've started putting the case price in the emails again. no more clicking to the site.

There was a bottle of that Elderton Ode to Lorraine in a mystery box I got a while ago - it is a lovely piece of kit (and comes in the world's heaviest bottle, if that's a selling point for you).

Hey folks, hoping for some tips from those of you that have done some travel in Italy / France – specifically some good wineries to visit.

Currently in Siena with the missus and have another 7 days driving up through the north and doing some sights / wine but having trouble finding wineries to stop at. Have been to Montalpuciano, San Gimignano and a few other spots thus far but don’t have much of a plan up north except for Piemonte.

As far as France goes, we have 15 days and will be hitting up Champagne, Burgundy, Rhone (Châteauneuf-du-Pape mainly), and Bordeaux.

Did a quick forum search and found a few tips for Champagne. Will also try to get my hands on Oz and James in the next few days. Any other tips would be lovely

As Oz and James will tell you, some of the best champagne is made by small local producers and sells for 15 Euro a bottle.

I think todays Mofo secret deal is the De Bortoli Estate Grown...I have a few of them from before - at $15 a bottle via paypal, is pretty great value.

I went to Bordeaux a couple of months ago. Spent 4 days there. There is a 'bar' in the main city area called Maison du Vin. It's a wine school / bar sort of thing that's partly subsidised by the local wine trade, so you can drink huge tasting glasses of classified growth wines for about 3-10 Euro. It’s outstanding value and I highly recommend it. We went there 3 times in 4 days from memory. As for touring vineyards, well, you probably already know it’s nothing like here in Australia where you can just rock up and taste free of charge. In Bordeaux you need to book in advance. 1st growths like Margaux and Lafite require 2-3 months notice or more and some won’t take visitors at all unless you’re in the wine trade. We actually did 2 days of a private tour - one on the left bank (Medoc) and one on the right bank (St Emilion / Pomerol) where a guy took us around to 4 estates each day and did all the organising (and driving) for us. It wasn’t cheap, but we went a long way to see all that Bordeaux had to offer, and trying to save money whilst there would have defeated the whole purpose of going in the first place. I can give you his details if you like. I think it was around 300 Euro each day, plus we paid for his lunch and some small tasting fees for us at some of the wineries which was separate (about 10 Euro each I think). Alternatively, in the city there’s a tourist office that offers larger bus tours for groups that you can just join. Otherwise you can do it yourself but it might be a little tricky. I didn’t even bother trying to be totally honest. Hope this helps a little.

indeed.... i was going to suggest the Tyrrells Vat 5 but it appears they've stopped making it pity, i love that wine.

any of the tyrrells winemakers range should be good, just stay away from their cheaper stuff.

Thanks so much for the detailed reply. I've seen a few similar places to 'Maison du Vin' in Italy but only made it to one in Montepulciano which was great - glad to hear there's more of them around.

Would love to be able to spend that kind of money on a tour of the region but as we are on a fairly long trip and have a few areas of France on the agenda we can't afford a tour of that calibre. We have wheels but haven't made any sort of booking arrangements as of yet and by the picture you paint we might not have much success at all. Perhaps some of the smaller folk will be more available despite the hordes in summer.

Bus tours sound like an option though we would have preferred to drive around and take our time rather than be zipped to and from with the masses. Bonus is that there's no designated driver I guess. Seems i have a lot of research to do! Thanks again for the help.

Alpha box and dice to puck up 'supplies' as i now call it, few tarrot and whatever takes my fancy on the day.
Yangarra - great winery, highly recommended. Will post more when i crack a few. High sand was fantastic. Ended up sharing half the bottle with the lovely lass doing the tasting.
Samuel's gorge -fucking great range. Pity they don't blend their exceptional wines...

You should , if you have nothing better to do, check out Melbourne St Wine Cellars on Sat afternoons.

yesterday Kaesler from the Barossa was there. Full range, including their $70 shiraz and their $195 (yes) top end wine http://www.kaesler.com.au/html/OldBa...sandawards.htm . Generous pours too, I would have had maybe 150 to 200ml of the $195 wine. Superb.

Picked up a case of their Bogan Shiraz at 20% off http://www.kaesler.com.au/html/Bogan...stingnotes.htm

Samuels Gorge has a great view over the Okaparinga, doesn't it?

you should also check our Pertaringa in McLaren Vale if you haven't already, particularly the Tannat

Kaesler = awesome. Drink it a bit but not the upper end shit.

Samuel's was great... Dragged the tasting girl out for the shariz as the sun was starting to go down. Said i wouldn't buy a drop unless she had a glass as well.... Cellar door manager gave me 8 points for style, no phone number though

Drink some Pertaringa and don't mind them... Seems to be a good mix of old world and up front flavour. Would like to get down there and chat to them.

The winemaker is Geoff Hardy, who would normally be found up at K1, but his two point-people (Bec and Richard) might be at Pertaringa when you visit - great people to talk to. @pertaringawines on twitter is Richard, just ping him to find out when he is at the McLaren Vale cellar door - or you could just do the lazy thing and visit them down at Glenelg for a private tasting in a bar somewhere - probably Eden where they tend to hang out.

Yangarra is absolutely fantastic wine everything I've bought has been delicious. Just need the right occasion to crack the high sands grenache. their wines are really savory rather than typical australian 'big reds' the whole bunch shiraz is phenomenal

highly recommended.

I preface this with "...or perhaps I have no idea what I'm talking about and I'm happy for someone to set me straight", but here goes. There are some great wines here, this is true, but I have looked at quite a few Grays auctions and never really seen anything that’s a ‘bargain’ once the buyer’s premium (normally around 15%) and freight are applied, especially when you look at a single bottle lot. A while ago the Bilson’s liquidation wine auction was on Grays and a lot of the prices ended up being more than what you would pay retail which I couldn’t quite get my head around. Maybe people get excited with auctions and just assume that the prices are good because they’re liquidation auctions. The only problem is that the more people that know about them (and Grays is very popular) the more it drives the bloody price up! You only need to look at this auction and see the prices of the local wines (Head, Cape Mentelle etc) and see that once you apply the added costs, you are paying more than what you would at Dan’s, 1st Choice or several other online retailers. As I said, I check these out, but there’s rarely a true bargain on here as you may expect at a liquidation auction... Langton’s on the other hand often delivers some killer prices, though I’ve never bought at auction myself. The premium wines that are here (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone etc) may provide some ‘value’, but they’re still well out of my price range.

BRTX, couldn't agree more. I look there occasionally and put in a bid or two and end up being out-bid for sometimes stupid prices. my guess is most of the people are addicted to grays and don't know much about the product or real prices of picking up quality wine cheap.

Three bottles of Equipo Navazos La Bota De Fino Amontillado (#24) and four of the '09 Navazos Niepoort Vino Blanco. Was keen on the Pyramid Valley Chardonnays and a couple of the Jura packs but they are easier to find than Navazos.

Just got an invoice from Grays and there is an extra $50 of charges added (GST, shipping + buyers premium).

Still a good price though considering the Navazos #24 usually goes for around $95 a bottle and I got them for $45 each.
