Quality Melbourne Restaurants for Large Groups (15+)
I am looking for some advice from some Melbourne food heads.

I am heading over in about 3 weeks and am looking for some good quality restaurants/bars (any cuisine) that can accommodate a large group of around 20 people

I have tried a few places that were recommended (Newmarket, Mamasita, Golden Monkey) but none have been too accommodating.

We are staying in St Kilda so anywhere between there and the city is fine.

Any advise from local Melbournians to an interstate punter would be great!

Cheers,

Sudz

Mamasita is about the LAST place which would be good for a group that size...they don't take bookings at all and always have a queue of about 20 people

Groups that size are really tricky, you almost need a place with private dining rooms...try Hu Tong on Commercial Rd in Prahran, food is awesome (Asian/Dumplings) and I know they have some large rooms for groups

Hu Tong - 162 Commercial Road Prahran VIC 3181, Australia

Pete Gordon - One Funky Broken Sunday - guitar a-twanging, horns a-plenty, funk a-flowing, beats a-broken, cheddar practically flowing CLICK ME

^ nice, but Hellenic Republic is a looooooong ways from St Kilda!

Not sure about Hu Tong's liquor license, it feels to flash to be a BYO, but might be, best give 'em a call

Very few places in the area can accommodate that many unfortunately. But if you get desperate consider asking if you can get two tables of 10, even if they aren't next to each other? Chinta Blues (malaysian) on Acland St (fitzroy st end) might be able to sit that many.

Ilona Staller on Carlisle St has an upstairs private dining room that can seat 20 or more. Food is great there, but if you sit in the private dining room it is a set menu/set price. http://www.ilonastaller.com.au/

Anyone know any middle o' the range restaurants which can take groups that size/have private rooms? Mostly they seem to be high end...looking at a place for my 35th b'day coming up and don't want it to cost the earth for everyone.

Any of the chinatown restaurants have private/secluded areas that anyone knows of?

Red Spice Road looks like an option, but yeah, not BYO and $55 for cheapest banquet makes for a lot to spend just for someones birthday dinner.
