Sound Lounge Part 1 // Aoki Takamasa / Kazu Kimura // Aug 25

The Sound Lounge is a pop up event space located in the flagship venue of the performing arts in Victoria, Arts Centre Melbourne. As part of the opening season program for the newly redeveloped Hamer Hall precinct, Arts Centre Melbourne together with Mad Heckler, Stable Music and Heavy Innit will present two electronic music events in the John Truscott designed foyer of Hamer Hall.

One of the best elements of pop up events and spaces, is their ability to take a conventional activity and transform it, by placing it in a unique environment and it doesn’t get much more unique than this.

John Truscott was an Australian actor, production designer and costume designer. He won two Academy Awards for his work on the 1967 film Camelot. In the 1980’s he was brought in to complete the interior designs of the Victorian Arts Centre, and it is within this stunning space that these Sound Lounge events will take place. A visual media show has been conceived and designed specifically to compliment and highlight the unusual features of this space by director, digital artist and VJ, John Power.

PART 1 - SATURDAY 25th AUGUST 10:00pm-3:00am

The first in this two part event series of late night, electronic music events takes place on Saturday 25th August and features both Melbourne talent as well as two Japanese acts; DJ Kazu Kimura and live experimental artist Aoki Takamasa. The Japanese flavour of the event has been specially programmed to compliment both the Sayonara and Kaeru Japanese arts projects taking place at Arts Centre Melbourne.

AOKI TAKAMASA LIVE (OSAKA, JAPAN)
DJ KAZU KIMURA (NAGANO, JAPAN)
QUA (LIVE)
MATT RADOVICH
DAVE PHAM

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:

AOKI TAKAMASA [ RASTER-NOTON / OP.DISC ] OSAKA, JAPAN

Heading to Australia for the first time is live electronic experimental artist Aoki Takamasa from Osaka, Japan. His past productions could be filed under experimental, ambient, electronica and IDM. Having undertaken collaborations with prolific Japanese artists such as Ryoichi Kurokawa, Fumiya Tanaka and Tujiko Noriko, and releases on Alva Noton's Raster Noton imprint, Takamasa’s sound has been described as Boards of Canada meets Autechre and is sure to impress with a stunning visual media show.
http://www.aokitakamasa.com/

KAZU KiMURA (NAGANO, JAPAN)

Originally from Nagano Japan, Kazu Kimura is known for launching some of the earliest dance parties in Tokyo in the early 90’s. He moved to Australia in 94' where he was received with open arms wowing local crowds and became widely acclaimed as one of the most popular techno DJ’s on the Australian dance party circuit. Now based in Madrid, Spain he is a seasoned veteran performing regularly at the best clubs and festivals where he can be heard unleashing his tech house and minimal techno sounds. Think Richie Hawtin, Dubfire, Adam Beyer.

QUA

Melbourne's Qua is essentially one man, Cornel Wilczek. His music began as dreamy electronic soundscapes in Adelaide, Australia, sometime last century. Fast forward to 2012 and we present the new Qua - heavy, danceable and more abstract and as psychedelic as ever. Fusing techno sounds from a decade past with bleeps and beats from a distant future. As Qua he has released albums on Mush Records - USA, Headz Records -Japan , Surgery Records - Australia & Someone Good - Australia. Qua has toured internationally and become a regular around the national festival and live circuit. Live, Qua is no slouch. He is joined by James Cecil (Super melody, Architecture in Helsinki) on electronic drums and the two completely reinterpret the programmed sounds in an improvised and very organic way with lots of electronic machines.

I still can't believe we are going to get to play in this beautiful piece of Melbourne architecture, the sound is going to be mental.

This calls for something really special.

Indeed. Hate to imagine how much it costs to hire the place but I'll be there to witness this epic event.

Well done stable!

Lack of excitement about Nitin Sawhney performing is concerning. He is an awesome musician. If you guys have the chance to check him out, I would really suggest you do so I am jealous that I can't attend this. Well done to all the promoters and people behind this event. Forward thinking music.

Get there early folks, I feel Mr Radovich has something very special in store for us, I'm predicting something quite Shadow or Krushesque with a violent twist of funk.

In the past I've heard many say, why don't promoters do something different, utilise different venues, be creative, this show is a perfect response to all that.

This Melbourne based event will be an excellent representation of modern sound architecture at it's very best. Not to be missed.

What the hell do I wear to this thing, a tuxedo?

Will I be ushered to my seat?

Think they'll mind if I'm having lines if the seat?

But seriously, am quite pumped.

Eager to hear what Radovitch has in store! If you drop perception (or whatever its called) again I'll buy you a beer.

Set times are get there when doors open at 930pm so you don't miss a thing. It's quality from start to finish!

Mr Groova, I wont be belting it out like last week. I'm on first this time, But I will be dropping some sneaky TECHNO tracks, in-between some experimental and some crazy beats. And yes it's Black tie

See you all soon!

Sound was good, loud but good. Venue was interesting, I thought it needed to be a bit darker but that could just be me nit picking. The visuals and projection mapping were a nice touch.

I hope they can hold dance music/Electronic Music events there for long time. I havent been since they renovated but this venue will be one of the most unique venue i have heard in many years AND hopefully the sound systems are good. A bit sick of parties and good dj shows at some shit venues in Melbourne

Wow!

Felt extremely honoured to be part of that, it was a truly special event.

Matty was all class delivering a set versed in every sound imaginable. I felt assaulted early, loved it.

Qua the techno ninja played some heaving tunes out of absolutely nowhere, didn't expect that at all.

Takamasa structured his set so superbly with amazing execution, such a refined sound, a real pleasure to watch, what a gentleman too. Masterful performance.

Kazu coming home with a huge bang! Hands in the air, whistles, the works, even the bar staff got amongst it.

Well done Stable and Heckler, will stay in my memories for many years to come.
