Yeah, just read that...had he gone bust or something? Though even that, hit up your bro for some money...could have had some on going mental issues perhaps...

Wow, shocking news... wonder why?

Great visual director, I reckon he hit his peak with 'Man on Fire' ( superb directors commentary on the dvd also) - there were some really inventive visual ideas in that movie, including innovative positioning of subtitles during the Spanish language scenes... it seemed like he ran out of fresh ideas there on out I felt.

Early reports indicate he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.

Poor guy.

Very talented.

And yeah I think Man on Fire was his best work. Great film.

RIP chap.

I can't go passed True Romance from that list...though I have a huge sweet spot for that film and I don't think I've seen Man On Fire...will check it out!

Bummer, still, pretty selfish thing to do...the inconvenience you cause leaving your car abandoned on a bridge probably blocking a lane, the added trauma to your family, the trauma to the people who have to fish you out of the river etc etc

OD/gas yourself in your garage if you're going to do it, don't make a public spectacle of it

Commit suicide is the wrong term. We dont say that any more. It was attached to suicide because technically suicide was illegal, and as you 'commit' a crime, that was why it was attached. We just say that he suicide or died from suicide.

Sad news either way though.

Adequately sums up my thoughts.

On topic, really sad to hear this news.
He made some of my favourite films.
Completely get Kiwi saying there are better ways but obviously wasn't sound of mind in the first place.
Will be interesting to see what news comes out over the next few days - read that there was a note in his office?

A real shame, guy had a talent for action.

Someone needs to write a book on how to commit suicide sensibly. Sad news, still remember being surprised at how good Man on fire was.

A lot more info on the man and his work.

Totally agree on it being a selfish act, especially the method he chose, but yeah...you never know how you'll react in these situations until you're in them. Really sad end to an awesome career and, no doubt, an amazing life.

Sad news indeed.

He made classy, stylish (perhaps he was getting a bit over-stylised in more recent films) action/thrillers that actually had enjoyable, coherent stories for the most part: Michael Bay should be so lucky.

From all reports a really decent and caring person too, who gave advice freely, and without hubris, to up and coming film-makers.

Sad sad news.

I liked Man on Fire but thought that he over-did it with the visual effects. It became distracting at points imo.

True Romance is a fave, as well as Bev Cop 2 and Last Boy Scout are classic action movies so he sure left a good resume. RIP

p.s. Was he Ridley Scott's brother or am I just way off there?

Looking at his resume, I'd say 'Spy Game' would have to be the most credible flick out of the lot, I didn't actually realise it was directed by him, it's got the sort of steady-handed assurance of a film with Robert Redford calling the shots in fact.

So I read today that his wife reckons he didn't have a tumor at all?
