Dunno if Tassie's the same but the water in NZ (at least up north where I'm from) gets pretty warm in late summer.

Sounds pretty similar then. West Coast of the South Island (equivalent to west coast Tassie) is pretty grim all year round I think (never been swimming there though).

Where exactly are you from? I could never tell if Piha and Muriwai were cold or not because it was such a mission getting out past the waves, so your body overheats in like 2 damn minutes.

Good ole Auckland, had a lovely 4.5 years there. Tauranga and Coromandel are still my favourite places.

I'm from Kawerau the Eastern Bay of Plenty, About 25km inland a bit further east along the coast from Tauranga. Used to spend my New Years Eves as a teen trashing the beachfront at The Mount . The water tends to be relatively warm round that side (and Coromandel) because it's not exposed to any southerly swells/currents. Piha/Muriwai tend to be a bit chillier as they're on the west coast which is genrally a lot rougher and more exposed but the water usually isn't too bad up there either after xmas, same deal with Raglan. South of Taranaki it's definitely chillier.

Strahan itself isn't that great, it gets pretty amazing if you head south though on some of the big 5 day walks, SW Cape is meant to be stunning.
