Before we implode....best of 2012!!
Yep, it's that time of year for absolutely no market-research purposes of all, but for your own chin-stroking or trolling I ask what the best of the best (and possibly the worst) was for in 2012.

Top 3 only and special mention allowed.

Bold the topic if I leave anything out and copy/pasta away:

Best local DJ:
1.
2.
3.

Best local producer:
1.
2.
3.

Best Venue:

1.
2.
3.

Best Night/Crew:
1.
2.
3.

Best Festival:

1.
2.
3.

Best International gig/artist:

1.
2.
3.

Best Free Night/party:
1.
2.
3.

Best local label:
1.
2.
3.

Best International Label:
1.
2.
3.

Best Flyer/promo:

2.
3.

best gigs were

Amon Tobin @ The Sydney Opera House (by a country fucking mile the gig of the year)
Strawberry Fields (best camping festival)
Laneway (best city festival)
Teebs @ GoodGod
Seekae @ The Sydney Opera House
Future Classic Night @ The Sydney Opera House
Harbourlife

I'll give Aastral People and Future Classic the best crews, they're putting together a lot of line ups of forward thinking tunage. SASH are doing great things within more traditional boundaries. Bare Essentials for their rooftop efforts.

Laundry best club for a guaranteed good night irrespective of who's playing. GoodGod I've grown to like too but that's more cos of the indie crews using it for said forward thinking artists. Abercrombie for its all round awesomeness.

Let downs:

Four Tet @ the Metro (poor sound and played his new album which doesn't do much for me)
Mount Kimbie @ The Hi-Fi (just lacked the killer blow, they'll get there)

love 'em both but failed to deliver.

In terms of actually in the city, and not in the bush, the only gigs worth talking about were John Fleming @ Laundry and Dick Trevor @ Phoenix. Both absolute masterclasses.

My favourite gigs of the year were, in order:

1. Hernan Cattaneo - Ivy & Laundry
2. John Digweed - Greenwood & Laundry
3. Sasha - Metro
4. Guy J - Laundry
5. Luis Junior - Laundry

Only festival I went to was Subsonic, best sets I remember.
1. Dasha Rush
2. Nico Stojan
3. Anna Leevia
4. Dj Trinity

Biggest let down.
1. Francois K - Goldfish (Mainly due to venue & night in general)

EDIT. Tune of the year:
Kölsch feat. Troels Abrahamsen - All That Matters

Local DJ is Darkchild/Raffi Lovechild.

Kalya Scintilla/Merkaba is the best Australian producer/act I've seen this year. 5 minutes of the crowd just going crazy over him after his Kalya set @ Eclipse. Not seen many bigger ovations than that.

Best free night was eating some shrooms and spending the next few hours on the childrens play equipment at a park I found in Stanmore.

Festivals in order were Eclipse, Regrowth and Rainbow Serpent.

Best local label is Zenon Records. International is Looney Moon Records. So many great labels though.... impossible to really pick a favourite.

John 00 Flemming @ Laundry
Jaytech @ Laundry
Jody Wisternoff @ Laundry
Nina Kraviz and Joris Voorn @ Spice
Aly & Fila and Orjan @ Home
Jochen Miller and Rank1 @ Metro
Alpha2 @ Family, Brisbane

Festivals
Defqon's production was easily the best yet. Massive stage and display.

I'm sure judging by stories on here and from close friends, subsonic is a must do next time round.

Let downs
Paul Oakenfold @ Hordern. Looking like a promising gig but just didn't get anywhere near as expected.

Genesis is probably one of the best crews of the year. Absolutely smashed it with solid int lineups and various locals moving up.
SASH, Spice and laundry also delivered the goods as usual.

Locals wise, I think Cassette, James Petrou, Trinity and Mesan. Still Sydney is quality locals wise at the moment.

but i have to give props to beardmanone22 for consistantly sticking to his guns and bringing out quality acts that normally, may never grace these shores
dj wise, i think one of the best new breed of djs in this country is trinity. such passion for music, and a unique style all her own

I only went out a handful of times this year, the only gigs I can remember that I really enjoyed musicwise were Azari & III at the metro, the Hernan pool party and being at Spice on random Saturday and Gabby was playing some quality tunes.

It's true but that's because it's good to see some intelligent popular hip hop emerging after a terrible last decade for it. With Joey Badass, Doom, Odd Future etc. things are looking a lot better than Kanye and Lil Jon.

Those tools aren't in the same league as Doom. Listening to Odd Future is about as irritating as listening to Lil Jon. Rubbish.

I'd understand your point if you were talking about Atmosphere or something but not those muppets.

Hessle Audio did bring the goods - thanks for the reminder!
Qualia is $10 from memory, but a great little start-up night combining the old with the new skool.

Forgot about Typhonic - boy went International this year, with strong acclaim! Big ups!
Also forgot about Pinksilver!
Spewing about missing George Fitzgerald - he's had the magic touch this year as far as remixing.

I'd give 2012 4/10 overall. Some decent moments however just so inconsistent. So much boring music. Good vibes on the dancefloor, but that is due to a pick up in other areas thankfully. Awesome to see lots of new parties around the place putting out different vibes.

Though for me 2012 = Over rated.

Most of them came about after the crowd had bored the crowd completely, then someone a bit better would come on and get a good response. The rest were because I was really wrecked and so was everyone else. Neither occasions warranted note taking.

Orbital gig at metro was probably the most memorable for me. The crowd response was insane.

You may need to broaden your gig-attendance.
I could have named another 12 more gigs where crowd and music was heaps of fun...

Hugely. My taste has branched so much from typical 4/4 DJ music and I've never been happier. An abundance of awesome gigs in Sydney all the time.

I get out enough. I am just not as easily impressed as a lot of people seem to be on this forum.
Lucky this year there was a pick up in other areas so to speak.

I don't believe the large majority that actually take the time to post on this forum are 'easily impressed', that's just rude.

Less of a jaded attitude helps too. That goes for all of us.
