LWE Podcast 76: Anton Zap

Although he has only been releasing for a few years, Muscovite Anton Zap emerged on to the house scene with the presence of a veteran. From the outset it was clear his productions had authenticity stamped all over them; immediately arresting and full of fluid grace, the former resident of Moscow’s famed Propaganda club quickly began to develop his own particular sound. His early EPs for Quintessentials and Underground Quality ticked all of the right boxes for effortlessly hypnotic, deep house; but stood next to his releases for his own Ethereal Sound label, it was clear Zap was only just scratching the surface of his capabilities. These releases have seen Zap dive ever deeper into his sound, exploring a world that is dreamy, aquatic and without a trace of forced behavior. Without a wrong move to his name it seems every release from Zap is not just essential listening, but also an improvement on the last. And to show he’s no one trick pony, his contribution to the Story label found the Russian exploring a completely different kind of house, one that harks back to the days of its very roots. LWE tracked down the producer to coax a mix out of him, which, due to his limited English, does the majority of the talking for our 76th exclusive podcast.

Gavin Sutherland’s alter-ego, Fudge Fingas may only clock in at sixth on his list of how he is known by those closest to him (coming in after Dad and hubby among other titles), but for the hungry consumers of boogie-soaked house music it is the name that defines him. Starting out with a little heeded garage house 12″ as Charizmatix with Gareth Sommerville in 1998, he played keyboards for the likes of Craig Smith of 6th Borough Project and the Plastic Avengers before releasing his own productions with greater frequency around 2002. His early appearances on Firecracker Recordings found the producer working with sample-based, slow moving house tracks. Releasing almost exclusively on another Edinburgh-based imprint, Prime Numbers, since 2008, Sutherland has honed his sound further, dropping the samples in favor of his own voice, culminating in his finest release to date, his debut long player Now About How, which dropped in April this year. LWE caught up with Sutherland to find out more about the making of the album, the evolution of the Fudge Fingas sound and why he won’t be using his other moniker Vin Landers any time soon. Overnight success is a rare and elusive beast, though anyone might think that’s exactly what happened to the hitherto unknown Murphy Jax when his Mike Dunn endorsed debut release, “It’s The Music,” hit us with all the polish and verve of a seasoned veteran late last year. The truth is that the Berlin based producer had already been making music for several years, having released under a variety of names before settling on the Murphy Jax handle. Evoking the pure strains of Chicago house with a healthy serving of disco, Jax has been steadily turning on new fans with each release, so far gracing the likes of Clone’s Jack For Daze imprint, Turbo and My Favorite Robot. He is also behind the monthly radio show/podcast No More Pop where Jax and occasional guests lay down mixes both forward thinking and nostalgic, just for the sheer fun of it. LWE got in touch with Murphy to find out about his affinity for Chicago house and the journey that lead him there. We also coaxed out a hot mix of acid house that stretches from the early days of the little silver box and heads off far in to the future, making our 103rd exclusive podcast a freshly minted future classic.

LWE’s 107th and final podcast of 2011 comes from the hilariously named 2toomanygays of London, the duo of Michael Oswell and Samuel Ashton who have been DJing around the city together for a few years. Their house-flavored mix is imbued with all the depth and grace of two scene veterans, melding rare classics and recent favorites in a manner which left each selection feeling simultaneously fresh and timeless. Theirs was easily the most ambitious mix we received, sliding through 17 tracks in just over 48 minutes while maintaining a naturally entertaining pace. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself putting this on during your New Year’s Eve celebrations, as it will sound as good this year as it will a decade from now. Many thanks to the guys for their mix; make sure to catch them in action if you’re around London.

New York has a long and storied history when it comes to dance music, but nowadays, with so much focus in the scene being allocated to Berlin and London, New York’s club scene has a bit of a “second [club] city” complex. And while many of the city’s big clubs leave much to be desired, digging a little deeper in the outer boroughs reveals a handful of world-class parties that stand up with the halcyon days of New York’s renowned tenure as dance music’s capital. Mister Saturday Night, helmed by Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin, is one of those parties. In only a couple years, Carter and Harkin have organized some of the very best loft parties in New York: bringing in extraordinary guests as well as becoming very accomplished DJs in their own right. In addition, the Mister Sunday (formerly Sunday Best) parties have become a summer institution — a day party beside the infamous Gowanus Canal where New Yorkers let their hair down while consuming delicious tacos and local brews. LWE caught up with Eamon and Justin at the start of 2012 to discuss the year that was, their ethos for the party, and Twitter beefs. They also provided us with our 108th podcast in advance of their January 14th appearance at Chicago’s Smart Bar: a distillation of the party’s sound into an hour and a half of house and techno both new and old.

Some complain that the media (music related or not) focuses too much on constructed narratives, and in dance music one of the most compelling recent narratives has been the vital New York house scene. While many of the producers involved, from Levon Vincent to Nina Kraviz, have all gone off to do their own thing, they all share the same back story: they all came through Jus-Ed. The lynchpin of Northeastern deep house has jump-started many a career, as well as having a very impressive one himself. Unfortunately, not even dance music can escape the troubles of a struggling economy — one reason Ed recently brought Underground Quality into self-distribution. We got in touch with Ed to talk about the move, as well as the closing of Tape in Berlin, a club that has deep ties with the Underground Quality family. He also provided us with our 110th podcast: a special mix of his tracks (with some guest cameos) dedicated to the closing of the club.

New York: nowhere else in the world is multiculturalism more on display than the city where over 130 languages are spoken. The musical landscape of the city is no less diverse, and the duo of Runaway (Marcos Cabral and Jacques Renault) could easily be one example of the “melting pot” theory. Cabral is a longtime fixture of New York’s techno scene, working at both Sonic Groove and Satellite Records (both sadly long since closed) and getting his production start on Traum’s Trapez sub-label. Jacques Renault meanwhile cut his dance music chops in Chicago as a drum and bass DJ and buyer for Gramaphone Records before relocating to New York and meeting Cabral. The two distill their diverse musical lineages into house tracks as Runaway, producing hits such as 2008′s piano-led “Brooklyn Club Jam” and last year’s “Indoor Pool.” The latter launched Throne of Blood sub-label Let’s Play House, the new label arm of Renault’s series of parties thrown with Nik Mercer, and as a pair, Cabral and Renault run On The Prowl, a platform for both themselves and friends, as well as the edits label Party Breaks. LWE caught up with the Runaway boys to talk about their individual projects, New York’s party landscape, and dude apartments filled to the brim with records and drum machines. Cabral also contributed our 117th podcast, a sterling hour of analog house both new and old.

As much as we like to think that the life of a DJ/producer is an endless rotation of perfect gigs, waking up some time past noon to go grab a late breakfast and casually peruse through their local record store, the reality is that most of them work very hard to be where they are. For Ilker Soylu aka Philogresz, that couldn’t be more true. The Turkish born producer is an ardent believer in the “more is more” policy when it comes to his work ethic. Not only does he run the Phil and TEAM Records labels, he also finds the time to lecture on sound engineering, produce his own tracks and remain active in a number of other endeavors. His own tracks have found homes on Ware, Prog City Trax and Treibstoff amongst many other labels and can run the gamut from deep, lazy house through to disco, minimal and straight up techno. Little White Earbuds got in touch with the relentlessly busy Soylu to talk about his multitude of projects, how he integrates his predilection for guitar music into his productions and to find out what’s coming up on his horizon. Musically, there are names whose mere mention conjures up not just a type of music but a feeling that goes along with it. Osunlade is one such person, his name having long been a by-word for soulful house music. Though his productions are not exclusively centered on house, you can be assured that if you pick up an Osunlade release or remix it’s going to be dripping with soul and emotion. Getting his start in the music industry while still in his teens, he began working with high profile artists as a producer, though after ten years he felt the pull to delve into his own creative passions and so founded Yoruba Records as a platform for his distinctive productions. Since that time, Osunlade has given us six full length albums, a myriad of singles and remixes, and mostly recently a Defected In the House mix, all infused with that unmistakable, rich current of soul that runs through all of his work. LWE tracked down the producer on his island home of Santorini to talk about his passions outside of music, why his last album will be his last house album and what his dedication to Ifá means to his music. When Patrice Scott launched his Sistrum Recordings label in 2006 it was clear that the three fathoms-deep cuts on his Atmospheric Emotions EP were not the work of a beginner. Indeed Scott had been DJing since the 80′s alongside many of his more well-known Detroit compatriots, and had been producing for many years, though didn’t seriously begin to work on his music until a year or so before the release. Since then Scott has built Sistrum into a label that stands as a by-word for quality deep house and techno, releasing artists like Leonid, B and Imugem Orihasam, while his remixes have lent extra kudos to the likes of Tazz, Fred P, Raiders of the Lost Arp and Oliver Deutschmann. LWE spoke to Scott recently about the likelihood of a full length album, the importance of sticking to your convictions, and the constant inspiration of Detroit. He also put together our 129th exclusive podcast; a faultless mix of late-night house and techno that exhibits not only his supreme taste but also the underlying deepness that is inherent in his own productions.

Long a part of some of the heaviest Detroit music collectives, Marcellus Pittman has waited longer than many of his peers to be paid his dues. Appearing as early as 1999 with Theo Parrish on the first of two Essential Selections EPs, he has charted a slow but steady stream of singles and remixes, labels like FXHE, Sound Signature and Track Mode all benefiting from his stripped back take on house and techno. He is also a part of the revered 3 Chairs and the Rotating Assembly, both Detroit supergroups filled with some of the most talented producers on the planet. Launching his Unirhythm label in 2006, Pittman has used it to release some of his most crucial work, recently collating it, along with some new material on his debut album, Pieces. Little White Earbuds got in touch with Mr. Pittman ahead of his date at Fabric’s 13th birthday celebrations to find out more about his beginnings, what his position in 3 Chairs and Rotating Assembly means to him, and how he approaches his DJ sets. He also gave us our 140th exclusive podcast, a typically inspired and far reaching journey through funk, soul, house and techno that just gets better with each successive track.

From humble beginnings, Levon Vincent has grown into a force to be reckoned with. Starting his Novel Sound and Deconstruct (with Anthony Parasole) labels in 2008, their stamped white labels were borne out of economic reality instead of perceived style, pre-dating (and, together with WAX/Equalized, likely causing) the proliferation of stamped labels. The sounds etched in those grooves, however, are what has led Vincent to his present status on house music’s Mount Olympus — the first name the heads rattle off when asked who their favorite artists are. The gritty dub-techno of “Invisible Bitchslap,” the frisky, beat-down house of “These Games, the rain-dance rave of “Man or Mistress,” and the tender sing-along “I Owe You Everything” have all, among many others, solidified Novel Sound and Deconstruct as two of the most coveted labels in recent memory. Droves of techno heads immediately drop what they’re doing and go to the store right now when the newest ones come in and make Faustian deals for back-catalog issues. Keeping his releases close to home and few and far between, Vincent has etched out a space all his own in dance music and has pursued it with aplomb, most recently with his definitive CD for Fabric.
