Beatport now shows which tracks are territory restricted, as part of the listing details = you know in advance you won't be able to buy the track.

Considering that they could just torrent the track i think people that are willing to endure the tediousness of proxys should be acclaimed if anything.

i still bought the track - cost three times as much - so does that equal piracy???

i normally just download an illegal copy of the tune if it's restricted on beatport. if they don't want my money then i won't give it to them.

haha that's fucked up! man don't laugh too hard OK, but i tried to buy that barbara streisand tune for sampling and chopping the other week and couldn't do it, and i live in the UK. fucking beatport!

instead i got it off junodownload.

i guess the moral is if you can't get it on beatport try other sources.

I've found running an mp3 validator tool fixes the problems with playing them via USB (something to do with the embedded artwork in the mp3 files causing the problems with 400s, apparently).

on the topic of territory restrictions. is there anyway to bypass amazon's geographical restrictions? i am trying to buy this: http://www.amazon.com/Cuantico/dp/B001GDUCTE but mp3 purchases are only available to US residents. i tried using a US address and it still didn't work. HELP. or if anyone knows somewhere else i can buy this album in mp3 format let me know.

edit: turns out it was on beatport all along. i swear that was the first place i looked

thats because you have to go to the MIPI.com.au site and get the list of LEGAL sites your allowewd to buy from

you dont use that list and site thats NOT listed normally will get closed or have territory restrictions

so be warned a lot more sites will go very soon

The list is not exhaustive on the MIPI website, (as it admits). Beatport is a legit site in Australia for purchasing music, as it operates in many countries however territory restrictions apply to some tracks for whatever reason. I think maybe itunes wants exclusive rights for some tracks i've noticed?
Check it ****s.

BTW. To set the record straight on how territory restrictions work. It is not determined by the store e.g. Dancemusichub.com, iTunes, Beatport, Amazon, etc. It is determined by the label.

Local labels co-ordinate with labels from other countries to gain exclusive rights for sales and distribution of a particular label (or release) in their respective territory. MOS, Central, Onelove all do it. It's consumer un-friendly but another revenue stream for the labels; a necessary evil to sustain diminishing music sales revenue.

A big contributor is MOS getting licenses for their comps for tracks that may never be released as singles.

In reality Territory Restrictions are here to stay. While the internet is, for intents and purposes, without boundaries the music industry has been constructed with boundaries and their walls will come crumbling down if they fully embraced it. Ultimately though any business that does not put the consumer first is doomed. It p1sses me off that people coming to DMH to purchase music legitimately can't do so because of territory restrictions.

woo hoo...I see we are still on MIPI's site.

I remember when DMH first launched and I used the word "bootleg" in a newsletter....the link got removed and we got a call from their lawyers...LOL...hair trigger.

FYI...the head of MIPI has now joined the National Broadband Network; ponder that one!

An irony to be sure! I've actually been using DMH for a long time, quite like the wider selection that it presents though it is sometimes a little slow to load...

Is there a workaround happening for this problem currently? What's a good method that works (and doesnt involve me installing gay firefox preferably?

Bumping the old thread, tried doing the proxy trick on beatport today and it doesn't work anymore for me. I can find the track but I can't add it to my cart. Is there still any way to get around restrictions?

I thought restricted tracks were hidden from view on the new site now, based on having been logged in and the site knowing your location? Is the old site still in operation?

I haven't had it give me the hand since the new site, so yeah, I thought they were hidden based on detecting your IP address, too.

Yeah they are hidden unless you use proxy from UK or US. They must have closed that loophole tho.

This doesn't relate to territory restrictions, but I've always thought it would be cool if Beatport could remember your "play queue" against your username.

So, with that, giving you the ability to queue up a massive list of tunes and continue to listen to the same list on the way home, and at home.

Bugged me a bit when I tried to add an old track to my crate (Chris Liebing remix of The Horrorist's "One Night in NYC") and said it was territory restricted. Territory restrictions for new tracks, I can understand, but not for old tracks.

I'm pretty sure the iPhone beatport app will allow you to do this... I've manually "cleared" my queue a few times just coz I'm kinda OCD but noticed that it had at some points remembered 50+ entries

Yeah I eventually gave in and just bought the tracks i wanted on itunes. I'm guessing labels have some sort of agreement with apple to sell some tracks exclusively to itunes in certain countries. Too bad they are only 256kbps

Territory restrictions are stupid and basically force me to pirate the songs instead of paying the label.

I don't believe it stores the playlists across platforms - e.g. web, iPhone app - though, does it?

I have noticed recently tracks I am looking for no longer appear sometimes. That must be as due to not showing restricted tracks in restricted territories. I have been using it as an excuse to buy vinyl if I really want the track.
Check it ****s.
