USB soundcards
Hey team,

So the tip of the plug from my RCA cord has broken off and is stuck deep in the headphone jack of my MacBook... Not good. The MacBook now thinks there are headphones/RCA cord plugged in constantly, meaning no sound from the speakers.

Aside from replacing the headphone unit ($700+ according to the Apple store due to the whole logic board having to be replaced) it has been suggested that I buy a USB soundcard instead - can anyone provide any guidance as to what I should look for? Happy to spend $100 or so but have seen a range from less then $10 up to $180+ and am a bit lost!

Cheers

Why were you plugging an RCA cord into a macbook anyway?

Do you mean 3.5mm jack?

I don't see how a sound card would allow the speakers on the computer to work, you could plug headphone or external speakers into a sound card though?

Ah yeah totally what I meant, 3.5mm jack duh sorry!

And yeah the speakers will never work again, but options for headphones or external speakers are what I'm looking for

I'm no expert with sound cards, nor do I even have one. But I believe these will work as a way to get headphones working (maybe speakers too depending on inputs etc)

They're some of the cheaper options.

Post a photo so we can see how bad it is. I doubt you have to replace the whole board. You can probably just open up your macbook and remove the broken off bit from inside. Worst case scenario you can use the super glue trick.

USB soundcards were a big no-no a few years ago, but if you've got USB3 I think it should be okay these days.

Hang on, what? most soundcards have a USB interface and that's been the case for 10 years. as long as it's USB2.0 there's no problem with latency unless you're really anal about it or haven't set things up properly.

e: btw OP, that $60 berhinger is all you'll need even for amateur plonking about on ableton or whatever.

Yeah, I've got a $60 shitty Numark one and it does the trick for just ensuring you have a clean line in for recording your mixes...never used it for a line out, but it has one
