16/9/09 Drums Of Death/joe Hot Chip/cooly G/debruit/brackles
![]() On Wednesday 16th September, following the Oxford Street launch party earlier that evening, the Pull & Bear afterparty will descend on Bishopsgate’s Bathhouse to take London’s late night dwellers on a dark, decadent journey. Set amongst a decaying churchyard on the back of Liverpool Street, The Bathhouse is a breathtaking new venue transformed into a cross between a Victorian Turkish baths and a sleazy club space. Disco balls, golden tiled walls and a ludicrous birdcage DJ booth all make for a unique space that’s set to harbour some of London’s finest new DJ and performance talent. Drums of Death inhabits the headline spot, bringing with him a slew of new productions and his highly tempered voodoo-rave style, along with his own confrontational party delivery, and of course, that get-up. Having bust up all manner of raves across Europe, the electro-grime destruction of the Dark Prince of Voodoo will leave you shook. Joe Hot Chip co-headlines, bringing with him a raft of exclusive releases and remixes that only a man heading up one of the UK’s finest pop exports can get his hands on. Expect grime variations, booty-bass crossover goodness and a pop sensibility to his mixing. One of the NME’s recent Future 50 nominations, Cooly G stands tall as one of the UK funky scenes fastest rising stars, with a recent EP on Kode9’s Hyperdub imprint, plus a busying DJ schedule, this lady of London has a lot to offer the capital’s scene. Another artist carving out a name for himself and forging a fresh new sound is Civil Music’s own Débruit, a French master of synth-led beats and bass that combine to represent something akin to the new found sounds of ‘Wonky’, yet adhering to a strict hip-hop sensibility. Instrumental warbling and electronic swagger with a pop sensibility that holds much in common with UK artists like Joker, Slugabed and Rustie. A Nottingham beat-head following the remarkable story of garage from it’s 2-step roots, through dubstep and now onto it’s current guise as a breeding ground for 140bpm house inflected bass music, Planet Mu’s Brackles is picking up plaudits across the board for his original productions and swift DJ selection, providing a snapshot of the London underground. Dirty Canvas’s own DJ Reecha is another Funky exponent, having started the capitals finest Grime night, he now flies the flag for UK bass that sees him not only pushing the freshest sounds currently emanating from producers’ laptops, but also releasing some of the biggest party tunes through burgeoning label No Hats No Hoods. A back-to-back set from these two will be pure fire. Wrapping things up are a team of true London soldiers; the Patchwork Pirates represent a global mash-up of the very finest in cutting edge club music; whether its a crunked out deep south holla, a bass heavy party-starting dubstep selection or a purely Glaswegian mix of wonkified beats, the Pirates commit to the cause and bring some truly exclusives beats to the table.
