VIC - EGA - Bear (Owsley) Stanley - 4 Day Outdoor Conference Gathering - Nov 6-9

Entheogenesis Australis - 4 Day Outdoor Conference Gathering - Fri 6th to Mon 9th Nov 2009

Entheogenesis Australis (EGA) is a not-for-profit association that exists to create a supportive environment to foster mature, open discussion about psychoactive plants and chemicals. EGA hosts an annual conference to encourage informed dialogue on the role of such sacraments in culture, history, spirituality, art and sciences. EGA addresses many of the myths surrounding psychoactive chemicals and also examines aspects of safety, harm reduction, psychology and the law within an Australian context.

EGA 2009 will create a space for growth of the spirit, mind and body, hosting over 25 expert speakers from around Australia and abroad. The speakers make up the backbone of our event and are supported by a great host of other fantastic happenings including discussion panels/groups, workshops and performances. This will take place over 4 days in November nestled in the beautiful Strathbogie Ranges in north east Victoria, Australia.

Our aspiration is to create an active, transformative experience and
cultivate a community ethos and feel, through the synergy of science,
art, and ritual. We aim to create inspiring spaces that reflect and resonate with the overall philosophy of the event. The main conference space will be a work of art in its own right. Accompanying it will be the ~Mykopod~ space designed to help you 'relax ~ connect ~ integrate' during the gathering. To additionally help you tune in and play your part in the EGA experience, there will also be a healing tent, meditative crystal mandala dome and a visionary art space all connected by a very lush market area.

The event will also host a communal banquet, some ambient music and films as well as Masquerade Corroboree to keep you all on your toes.

We hope you can join us in the trees for an exploration of more than mind, body and spirit.

EGA 2009 Program

Bear (Owsley) Stanley
Talk 1 - 'The economic consequences of black markets, specifically in reference to drug prohibition'.

Talk 2 - 'The effects of certain psychedelics on mind function, including interactions with electronic circuits- a possible route to mental machine control'

"By conservative estimates, Bear Research Group made more than 1.25 million doses of LSD between 1965 and 1967, essentially seeding the entire modern psychedelic movement" - Joel Selvin

Bio
Considered by many as one of the legends of the sixties counterculture, Bear Stanley denies his heroic status, and spends his days working on various sculptures and writing essays on subjects such as the importance of carbon dioxide, the primary and only ‘plant food’, to the expansion of food crops and life on earth. Fair and equitable taxation (equal and low percentage on all ‘income), a proper runoff method to determine the results of elections, and how to unify and balance lawmaking. Writing laws in ordinary language rather than legalese. Including ‘sunset clauses’ to allow change to adjust to the rapid changes in today’s world-- amongst others. He is renowned for his contribution to sound engineering, particularly working with live gig iconoclasts, the Grateful Dead, and perfecting the idea of on-stage monitors and high quality PA’s. A tireless archivist, he kept a ‘diary’ of his front-of-house mixes, including hundreds of Grateful Dead performances, and has seen the release of a number of albums from his “sonic journal” tapes of PA mixes. Bear was a minor participant in the Acid Tests of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. He was the first underground cook to produce high-purity LSD in the 1960s, when it was legal, including the famous White Lightning and Monterey Purple. Bear Stanley now lives in Australia.

Robert Jesse
Talk 1 - 'Psilocybin and Spirituality:Notes from the Johns Hopkins Study'

Talk 2 -'(Entheogens), Awakening, and Spiritual Development'

Bio
Bob Jesse is organizer of the Council on Spiritual Practices (csp.org/about), which aims to shift modernity's awareness and practices with respect to primary religious experience (csp.org/PRE). CSP also encourages people to imagine and develop social contexts to contain such experiences and help them yield lasting benefit.

Through CSP, Bob and his colleagues initiated a study, conducted at Johns Hopkins (http://csp.org/psilocybin/) and reported around the world, of the psychospiritual effects of psilocybin in healthy volunteers (csp.org/psilocybin). This expands the emphasis in hallucinogen research beyond the medical treatment of ill people to include the betterment of well people, contributing to a science of pro-social development.

On his home front, Bob is co-founder of a spiritual community formed around ecstatic dance. His formal training is in engineering and lives in San Francisco.

Entheogenesis Australis (EGA) is a not-for-profit association that exists to create a supportive environment that fosters mature, open discussion about psychoactive plants and chemicals. We seek to explore ways to assess societal impacts and examine the positive applications of plant-based psychoactives and empathogens.

Altered states of consciousness have long been a fundamental part of human culture, and as our world becomes increasingly fast-paced, alternative modes are becoming ever more significant and consciously explored.
The Entheogenesis Australis 2009 Symposium aims to address the issues relating to drug use/misuse from social, cultural and historical/traditional perspectives. EGA speakers will draw on the backgrounds of physiology, biology, pharmacology, psychology, neuroscience, anthropology, botany and more to provide a more realistic context to the role drugs and altered states play in the modern world.

If you’ve ever asked yourself “has the ‘War on Drugs’ created more problems than it tried to solve?” or “is MDMA really a more dangerous drug than alcohol?” - then EGA is for you.

Entheogenesis Australis is a collection of thinkers from all walks of life, we come together to share knowledge about sacred plants, chemical alchemy and states of consciousness.

We hope you will join us in the trees for this exploration

Entheogenesis – What We Can Do
Bob Jesse - EGA Headliner

Much of the world’s suffering is unnecessary. Where can we turn for help in healing the world and building more joyful lives?

Across cultures and eras, profound experiences of unity with the cosmos – called, variously, mystical experiences, non-dual consciousness, unitive consciousness, or primary religious experiences – have sometimes lead to lasting, and lastingly beneficial, changes in the lives of those who encounter them. Some of them (Moses at the Burning Bush, the Buddha under the Bodhi tree, Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus, Bill Wilson in Towns Hospital) are not only life-changing but world-changing.

Many different activities – meditation, prayer, chanting, fasting, and dancing among them – have been used with the intention of preparing for such experiences or for occasioning them, and their nature seems to be largely independent of how they come about. The skillful, careful use of certain plants and chemicals is one of the least demanding means in terms of time and among the most likely to bring about a profound experience on any given occasion.

The wisdom traditions emphasize the critical importance of ongoing practice for spiritual development and to stabilize what may be gained in a primary experience. Today’s interconnected world presents a rich, even bewildering, array of old and new techniques and paths. Tradition and reason also say that the existence of a social "vessel" to contain the process – a group of people with some shared understanding of what the experience means and what is to be done with it – reduces risks and increases the chances that a given experience will lead to lasting benefit.

But this knowledge is scattered, incomplete, and tacit; there is more of it in the minds and hearts of teachers than there is in the writings of scientists. We know little, for example, about which practices work best for which people. There is much to be learned.

These observations lead us to believe that bringing more focus to this area would tend to decrease suffering and increase prosocial behavior in the world. We can pursue this goal by catalyzing research to improve scientific knowledge of the phenomena and their consequences, by working to create social understandings that make seeking out primary experiences seem less unusual than it now does to most westerners, and by encouraging people to find or imagine and develop social contexts that serve as appropriate vessels.
Foremost, we can redouble our commitment to our own spiritual growth, to the long personal work of tilling the soil for awakening, and to the communities that hold these intentions.

History of Entheogenesis Australis:

Entheogenesis Australis has grown organically over the years, starting out as a Victorian based Ethnobotany interest group who had attended and were inspired by the "Ethnobotanica" Australian Ethnobotany conference [www.ethnobotanica.org] in Nth NSW in 2002. After the event a small Victorian network developed and started holding a ‘Mini EB’ in Ringwood library. The meetings grew over the years and eventually underwent a formal transformation to become Entheogenesis Australis (EGA) in 2004. The first formal EGA conference, held at Ruby's Lounge in Belgrave, introduced us to a wider audience and moved our interest more towards the lecture/panel/workshop format, also introducing art, music and a spiritual dimension.

In 2004 the core group - Martin, Michael, Carl, Ronny and Tim - came together and started to chart a more conscious and intentional direction, leading to incorporation as a non-profit association in 2008. EGA currently holds a conference every year alternating biannually between an indoor event at Melbourne University and a larger outdoor conference gathering in Swanpool nestled in the beautiful Strathbogie Ranges in north east Victoria, Australia. In 2009 EGA launched an ongoing journal publication to supplement the conferences. As EGA has grown so has its commitment to providing a supportive environment for mature and open discussion about psychoactive plants and chemicals.

Our aspiration is to create an active, transformative experience and cultivate a community ethos and feel, through the synergy of science, art, and ritual. We aim to create inspiring spaces that reflect and resonate with the overall philosophy of the event.

EGA Opening/Closing Ceremony - Coordinator – Margaret Cross

The EGA Opening Ceremony has been designed to connect us all, one to the other in Unity consciousness so we may create in harmony, tolerance and understanding. The ceremony will be simple and powerful as we gather together in celebration of our connection and to seed
dream the future. We will gather around a sacred fire just as our ancient ancestors did. Wound together by billions of strands of love, light and remembrance
of who we are and why we are here.We will join together as one to Plant a Dreaming Tree. This act will embody our shared Reverence for nature and our intention to create heaven on Earth through our collective visions. Tomchia Raven Wolf will close the ceremony with a sacred Shamanic Chant to seal us
as one in Love and Collective vision.
