To help us celebrate the long weekend, we’ll be welcoming one man who has done a huge amount to spread his own unique and beautiful brand of techno here in Sydney, and one who deserves all the praise bestowed upon him: Defined By Rhythm.

Supporting him on the night will be Living Room DJs Leah Thomas and Gavyn Vincze, plus new additions to the Living Room family, Altay Altin and Ziad Zeino.
Whether it’s techno, tech, or even prog. One thing you can be sure of, is you'll hear some top-shelf TUNES!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Defined by Rhythm bio

Originally from Belfast DBR relocated to Australia in 2002 and has been kicking a hole in the underground ever since.

With his fresh take on the techier side of dance music, it's not only his knack for selection and programming that have gained him his recognition. His tight mixing and natural affinity with the music, mean that often throughout his set layers of tight-nit percussion will be sitting seamlessly before a quick nudge of the EQ release a bassline that sends the dance floor into a state of mayhem.

Not one to rest on his laurels DBR is also helping to spread the techno sound in Sydney, running not one, but two nights. Subservice has long been one of Sydney's best kept underground secrets, and 2008 saw the launch of [THE BOX] a night pushing local talent in the Australian underground scene.

DBR's voice in the musical direction of these nights is testament to their success. Supporting the likes of Justin Martin, Alex Kid, Lutzenkirchen, Jesse Rose, Phil Keiran, Dixon, Ame, D-Nox & Beckers, Ewan Pearson, 2000 & One, Christian Martin, Ashley Beedle, Joris Voorn, Slam, Silicon Soul, Robert Hood, Michel Cleis, DJ Pierre, Popof, Guy Gerber, Anja Schneider, Audion, Oxia, Worthy and Audiojack.

DBR has guessed at parties such as Deep as Fu*k, Sweet Chilli, Bread & Butter, TECHnique, Swarm, Pretty Simple, Spice and Lost Baggage, and it was his set at the latter that earned him residency at Sydney's newest club Nevermind.

With early productions already gaining interest from labels the next 12 months look like being very big for the 'big lad' of Sydney techno...

Recent Event Reviews

::Switch feat. Oliver Huntemann::

Musically, the night was definitely on-point. Defined By Rhythm took care of opening duties in the main room. It was a rare opportunity to catch DBR playing an early set, as he usually takes charge of the peak-time and early-morning slots, and it was a real treat for both him and the punters who made the effort to arrive early. Keeping it simple, stripped-back and groovy, DBR weaved his way through funky, bouncy tech house such as Break New Soil by Gregor Tresher and Reboot’s Vandon, warm, melodic groovers including Miss Jool’s Que Me Levante and a few bits of mechanical minimal tech.

::Lost Baggage feat. Luetzenkirchen::

I ventured into the side room where Defined by Rhythm was playing some more loopy, slightly minimal, style techno, and the crowd were absolutely loving it.

::Subservice::

Belfast’s loss is Sydney’s gain, and Defined By Rhythm stepped up, greeting us with some seriously deep minimal techy beats and hollow rumblings in what was to be a beautifully programmed set. Teasing the crowd with periods of sleepy tech before breaking into ripping synths, DBR played deep and chunky, and had the place rolling for the moment when John Devecchis took over.

Leah Thomas Bio

Always a music nut and classically trained, Leah was uninspired by the breaks and drum and bass scene in her native Southwest (UK). It wasn’t until she arrived in Sydney, via a stint in Goa, that she was really moved by dance music. Initially inspired by legends of the Sydney prog scene, such as Peter Farris, Robbie Lowe and Matt Rowan, she has been much taken with the new brand of techno of late. A sound which some might argue has a certain connection with the dark, driving sound of Progressive House in it’s heyday (and others might not!)

Forming the Living Room DJs with Gavyn Vincze last year, she began to put on her own parties, where the ethos was to simply “to play the music we love for the people we love!”

Whether it’s progressive house, tech house, or techno Leah’s playing, you can be guaranteed of some arse-shaking top–shelf tunes!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Gavyn Vincze Bio

Since 1998, DJ Vincze has been building a profile and a record collection that would be the envy of anyone seriously interested in their music.

Amassing a cache of over 36,000 records, his musical inquisitiveness draws from Melodic/Driving House, Tech, Breaks, Techno and Progressive. With such an eclectic menu of genres at his disposal, he is able to create a unique sound experience for his audience. With meticulous mixing and superb track selection, you'll always be guaranteed you can be guaranteed a rich musical journey you won't forget in a hurry!

In his home town of Sydney he has held residencies, or played at clubs as a guest, at The Colombian Hotel, Phoenix, Manacle, Midnight shift Club, Bunker, ARQ, Copperlily. Abroad, he has guest DJ’d in Paris at Le-Queen Club, Cabaret @ Be-Lounge and Le-Home.

Forming the Living Room DJs last year with Leah Thomas, he promises to continue bringing his unique sound to only the most receptive audiences.

Altay Altin Bio

Germkish ex-pat Altay Altin plays some of the best funky / danceable minimal you’ll likely to hear. Putting to pay once and for all any rumours that minimal can be boring!

Altay first started Djing in his hometown of Stuttgart, where he organised his own parties in one of Stuttgart's most well known underground clubs "Prag". There he hosted big players in techno such as Chris Liebing, Pascal Feos, Adam Beyer, D.Diggler, Heiko Laux, Tobi Neumann and many more. Later going on to play at some of the bigger clubs in the city, such as Climax, Zapata, and the M1. He even got to play at last Love Parade afterparty at Berlin’s Tresor, before they had to shut down the club.

Altay’s style incorporates not only his first love, Techno, but has evolved to include everything from Minimal to Tech-house. A new addition to the Living Room DJs, Altay has played several local Sydney parties to date: Thank techno its Friday, Sunday School and Sideways.

Ziad Zeino Bio

It’s been 10 years since Ziad took to the decks and he has since maintained praise of those who listened to his recorded sets or encountered him live.

In 2005, Paul Oakenfold judged Ziad as winner of the popular Heineken DJ competition in Dubai a milestone that initiated a regional public exposure.

His latest residency before relocating to Sydney inspired the crowds away from mainstream dance and engaged clubbers into what became the underground electronic transformation of the Middle East dance scene.

Having recently joined Sydney’s Living Room DJ’s, he looks to contribute once again to the revolution – a techno revolution progressively dominating the area, as he looks to deliver a sound unrestricted in genre, definite in mood, evolving to hypnotically trap you in the allure of timeless electronica,…listen at your own risk ..!
