Canyons (DFA) September 18th - Sorry Grandma!

DFA proudly presents Canyons, the Australian duo of Leo Holiday and Ryan Sea-mist. Drawing influences from the far corners of planet Earth and beyond, from Down Under to Over-the-Top, Canyons strike a balance between sand dunes and icebergs, psych and acid house, volcanos and valleys, pop and disco, existing somewhere between Nic Roeg’s Walkabout and Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto. Not ones to claim genres or adhere to them, the Canyons approach to writing music consists of intuition and feel. Dancing is encouraged, but quiet listening works just as well. We’d like to think that there’ll be a bit more of the former for their debut single with the DFA than the latter. The enormous “Fire Eyes” has a diva growling the title like Shirley Bassey escaping from the island of Dr. Moreau. An acid line seethes like a python while hand percussion, rattles, and weird jungle sounds swerve about in the mix. Deep down an unidentified bass growl arises.

On the flip, Holiday and Sea-mist drop “Dancing on Silk.” Surely, it needs no further metaphor than that, but here goes: a flanged snare twines around another female vocal, this one sexy and pouty in equal measure, while horns slush around, all elements soon warping before your ears. If that weren’t enough, Canyons have also established their own label, Hole in the Sky, simply to put out music they believe should be heard. Thus far, that means not only their own tracks, but those of mates like Tame Impala, the Delicate Genius, Pink Gin, and Runaway’s Jacques Renault. Appropriately enough, Renault returns the favour by throwing down a sticky remix of “Fire Eyes,” accentuating the keyboard stabs and dubbing out the vocals to make it more house-friendly. Canyons’ debut album is in the making and will be released on Modular Recordings. A full live Canyons experience is also on the horizon for 2010.
