Sander Van Doorn is Trance because he is Dutch and has 'van' in his name......

I'm stumped.

I've seen Sander play a few times.

Not once has he fit into the flow of the night/event he has played at.

He played in the GK arena at Futuremusic a couple of years back.

Then Godskitchen.... Then Trance Energy....

Why does he keep getting booked for monster Trance sets when he should be playing events with guys like Dusty Kid, D-Nox & Beckers and Alan Fitzpatrick?

He comes on after Menno De Jong last year, drops the BPM and plays sick Tech Trance... Big room Techno really. Didnt flow.

His such a fucking wicked artist and yeah he does do some really cool Tech Trance stuff... but he would be more suited to a Laundry/Darkbeat set than he is for a big Trance event imo.

Need further proof??..... just listen to Supernaturalistic and please find me a Trance tune on there...

Twas funny... I gave Grasshopper, The Bass, Sushi and 15 to a mate that plays a fair few Techno gigs around Sydney and he raved about them being proper dancefloor destroyers at these nights where Trance is lol'd at

So yeah..... only reason he is discussed on this forum is because he is Dutch and has "van" in his name yo.

true story.

wasn't at Future, but given his sound at the time, i guarantee it would have fit a trance event more than anything he's done/played recently...

his GK set was okay, trance energy i didn't really bother... the only tune of his i've liked a lot recently is Bliksem.. before that it was like his 2006 epic mega-techtrance stuff

so i see where you're comin from..

the whole point of sander in current times is that he's not genre-specific.

that's why riff was so huge, as was the JOC remix of full tiltin, pretty much any serious dance dj (serious = NOT electro house ) could put it into their sets, playing from house, to tech, to trance...

and that's why sander's so popular, has a bit of everything, and you can say he'd fit well into a techno party which is true, but he'd not play quite the normal stuff for those parties just the same way he doesn't play quite the right stuff for a trance party.

he can play either, and would dominate both
a lot of artists are like that these days i reckon

see this has been the problem with trance in tha last few years - peoPLe narrow the definition of trance down so far that only one small segment of what is really trance is defined as trance.

this is why a lot of the world only sees armada style dance music as trance.

trance is such a broad genre - just because its shit doesnt mean its not trance lol. its just shit trance.

i havent heard an svd set for a while but im backing he's still a trance dj

Na I admit... when I made this thread I was half trolling half cereal.

His is Trance... Tech-Trance... definately.

But he is definately more Techno... no doubt about that.

Just saying its kinda weird that he is strictly thought of as a Trance DJ despite alot of his productions being Technoes.

All comes back to the 'van' I tells ya.

It's more that he started off a lot more trancey than he is now, and hasn't gone up his arse far enough to be considered techno

I agree with EgosXII, he's not exactly genre-specific right now. His live sets have that groovy tech and even slight electro sound to them, before ramping up to tech trance, all with a pretty unique build to the set... And his radio show (like heaps of other radio shows) has all sorts of sounds in it.

SvD is the new face of trance to me. To me it feels like trance has two sorta directions at the moment, the traditional driving sounds pushed by Ferry, Askew, etc... And the hybrid sounds pushed by SvD, Schossow, Roth, etc.

Just because it's a hybrid sound doesn't make it trance. I wouldn't call Sander completely techno at all. Then again if your opinion of trance was narrow you wouldn't call him trance either.

Genres suck. SvD is one talented guy - the way he built his set over 60mins at Trance Energy was amazing.

Agree, he def used to produce stuff that was regarded as more traditional tech trance. He is a great festival DJ. His sound always suits that big room outdoor vibe. Cry less and stop buying tickets to future events if flow means so much to you.

It's the same reason i try to avoid Micheal Bay movies.

Sander Van Doorn is trance because he USED to be techtrance, and he slowly changed his sound to the more minimal stuff it (generally) is now, instead of doing a complete genre jump like oakenfold, tiesto etc. i think thats a big reason why trance has evolved to the sound it is today as well, the big djs have continued to support the tracks created by artists like sander, Marco V and to an extent randy katana, etc.

Whether his tracks are trance or not, he is still recognised as a trance dj / artist because that is the circle he generally moves around. its definitely bought about a new surge in the trance sound, not singlehandedly, but very influential at least.

Its a similar thing with techno, why it went from the more driving stuff to minimal, because of guys like Liebing / Beyer, etc, they influenced a new generation of artists, and suddenly there's an extension of a genre.

To be honest, its a good thing that it's happened, because there's only so much straight up trance you can handle in a night / day before you need something else to give it contrast.

Well... thats my last 3 minutes of thought on it anyway..... whether it makes any sense, or its worth anything to the thread will be revealed all in good time.

But there is one thing i'd like to point out: Sander in the cave would be stupidly intense.

^^^ Oh too fucking true. Nicolas Cage DOMINATED in that movie!
I didn't even know Michael Bay made that movie. He nailed it! That guy can still make some decent films. I guess it's just funny to bag him out cause Team America did it so well.

Lol I thought this was abt svd now where talking Michael bay lol, well sander said this in his production sessions that he plays trance, techno, tech house etc... So his still a trance dj I have his doorn identity mix and what I can is it's jus a hybrid of tunes from tech, tech house, a lil minimal and tech trance. But this new style is bloody awesome, there also progressive trance the third style like myon & shane54, San, gareth emery

Best set of the night easy. If you want to talk about someone who didn't play his set time, look no further than joc.

So yeah..... only reason he is discussed on this forum is because he is Dutch and has "van" in his name yo.

true story.

i think its a great point and well made.
At global gathering last year he was great because he broke the night up from all the other major trance stars, but at events with maybe 2-3 mega trancers, he often seems to lose a bit of momentum late in his sets..

And on that note, id like to mention Marco V.
Im sorry to anyone that loves him, but ive seen him basically vacate dance floors @ Amnesia ibiza and Galley @ Turnmills... not to say i dont like him, but i've had trouble handling 2 hour set's from him in a trance enviroment. (ive seen marco about 8 times)
He just dosent fit the flow and fails to lift intencity.. well thats my 2 cents anyway

I've seen Sander loads of times and I do think it does come down to the nights booking him. He is at a point in his career where he should be booked and placed on a suitable set time. Sander will play what he plays regardless of the time so it does come down to the the promoter to give him the right time that suits his sound and book other djs that suit the flow (if that's what they are after .... some promoters don't care about flow and just book big names that pull numbers)

His sound really suits Judgement Sundays. Having been at almost every one this year Sander always fit perfectly with the night, but although I didn't make it to Cream when he played I would bet his sound didn't suit as well there based on the other DJs on the lineup around him (although I know he's been put last at least once which he can do what the hell he likes then lol)

I agree with Rossco's take on it. SvD has inspired a change towards the more tribal/tech trance sound which I think is half way between pure Trance and Hard Trance so it kind of keeps the purists happy while being accessible to the harder trance fans as well.

I was actually talking more between trance and techno / tech house than anything else, going by his productions, and tracks he's been championing lately, at least.

yeah i think it's a huge leap claiming sander is anywhere NEAR hard trance.. maybe back in 2004 or something, he's more like tech house.

in fact he just won an electro house award according to his facebook LOL
not sure about that one tho

although this just shoots everything to shit ... http://www.djawards.com/

Sander was voted the winner of the Electro House category

I wasn't saying Sander is Hard Trance, I meant that his sound is in between the 2. His Judgement sets always started off more tech/prog and then by the end would be absolutely banging but no I wasn't saying he's hard trance at all.
