Brisbane's newest bridge - the Go-Between Bridge
So they're naming the new Hale Street bridge after the Go-Betweens...

CHRISTINE KELLETT September 29, 2009 - 7:58AM Brisbane's Hale Street Link bridge will be named The Go-Between Bridge, after the popular rock band. Brisbane City Council held a public competition to name the bridge - Brisbane's newest cross-river link between South Brisbane and Milton. Lord Mayor Campbell Newman will announce the new name at a ceremony today, alongside founding Go-Betweens member Robert Forster. Forster and bandmate Grant McLennan formed the rock outfit in Brisbane in 1978, producing hits include Streets of Your Town and People Say. McLennan died suddenly in 2006. The Go-Between Bridge was among 10 shortlisted in the council's 'Name That Bridge' competition, attracting more than 30 per cent of the popular vote. Mr Forster said he found bridges appealing. "I’m really honoured that the bridge has been named after the band that I co-founded with Grant all those years ago," he said. "I’ve always regarded bridges as poetic and romantic, so this is something that really appeals to me." "The people have spoken and I think it’s a fitting tribute to a band that helped put Brisbane’s music industry on the map," Cr Newman said. "And it’s a name that works on two levels – not only does it honour one of Brisbane’s most treasured musical exports, it also connects Milton and South Brisbane." The bridge forms part of the Hale Street Link project and it set to open to traffic next year. http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/quee...0929-g9jn.html |

since the lead singer has passed, wouldn't a persons name ne more suitable than the band name :/
but i loved the go-betweens, and that hasn't changed. i assume influenced many other aussie bands, and they (unfortuntaly) rape the streets of your town on the TV ( ) so i totally agree with agree with the choice of inspiration for naming the bridge. tween bridge it is ![]()

you should have submitted that macc4
there was a competition to name the bridge and the local councilwoman wrote something to the papers about her distate for unoriginal names suggested for the bridge, such as dead white men and historical events, hence the naming of it after the band, rather than the dead white guy who was once in it (no disrespect meant by these comments - the go betweens and grant mclennan are both amazing IMO) |

It's a great name for a bridge, and a fitting tribute to some modern Brisbane legends. I'm actually quite surprised that enough Brisbanites had the good sense to honour the band in this way. It's quite unlike us!
Also, Custard are reforming for the Q150 Proclamation Day concert. Life is good for Brisbane music lovers!

pretty obvious.... its the name of the aboriginal inhabitants of years ago... Quote:
The original inhabitants named the West End area “Kurilpa”, an Aboriginal word meaning "place for water rats", because of the large rats that infested the area close to the river.
also the name of the park its is attached too on the West End side..

hmm actually that would probably be a bit of a mess hehe.. but we need another link around that area to get the traffic out of the city When the UQ Green bridge was designed UQ agreed to it as long as there was no link to the UQ traffic system. They rightly were concerned with safety and further congestion to the over stretched UQ traffic system, this is why there is no from of road that links the bridge to the UQ system, it comes into a complete dead end, no service road, no nothing.

If it was going to be named after any Brisbane band, surely it should have been The Saints. Surely no band has ever been more groundbreaking or influential in Brisbane..... ever???
This is a group of guys who think the Sex Pistols were pre-fabricated pansies. Surely that alone shows how awesome they were/are.

that doesn't surprise me, and i can understand why they did it too. but it would be a perfect location for a northside/southside link if it wasn't going to ruin the UQ/st lucia area with heavy traffic issues |

you'ld have to do the craziest bush bash to make it work :/ and i think there are a buckload of posts. 450pm-600 is fucking rediculous around fred schnoll drive. no wonder UQ didn't want all the traffic from around anneraly cutting through uni. it would be bad for all drivers :/

I quite like the band but dont think its particularly appropriate to name an unpopular toll bridge after the band. There was a huge amount of people in the west end/highgate hill area protest over the bridge, now to try to suggest the bridge is a good idea the council attached a name of some local musicians to it, that tries to make people feel better about it. As Robert Forster said in the article, bridges are poetic...perhaps they are, but they are way more political than poetic. Privately owned toll bridge paid for by the public, opposed by the local community and named after a locall band to make it ok ![]() |
