Alt Friendly Hairdressers. Sydney

So yeah, I am looking to get my haircut and coloured some quite, different ways. My local hairdresser is a bit too tame and wouldn't stock anything other than peroxide and brown dye.

Does anyone have a place they go to, have heard of or recommend?

Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaanks

Get Smart on Burton St, Darlinghurst. Go to (small) Paul or Christina, though the others will also do a great job.

Furr and Doppelganger have some pretty good examples on their websites. Thats the kind of places I am after. Doppelganger has a better website, and a lot more examples of their work so might go there instead.

Will walk past Get Smart and have a look before I make a decision though.

i see kelly at brad ngata.

they're kind of more fashiony than alt, but they do lots of work that's very contemporary. they always win a bunch of shit at hair expo and they do heaps of fashion runway and editorial work with a bunch of big names.

they're a good option if you want something that's very now and cool but also on the grown-up side.

They look like they know how to cut hair, just I doubt they'll do what I want them to do.

I dunno how alt. Get Smart is either, but if you know (roughly) what you want, they'll be able to do it.

A cross between those 2. Different colours, but thats roughly what I am after in the hair itself. Still deciding on the colours.

i have had consistently 'alt' hair the whole time i've been going to them.

hahah honestly just good variations on a straight black fringe and varying lengths of hair doing different things though. i have a job where i need to look a bit cool/alt but also a bit grown-up, so it works for me.

in my experience they're always pretty psyched to take a risk and just go with something a bit wild.

i like them because they get these teensy details perfect that make everything work. my fringe has this really slight curve at the side where it meets the main hair that no cheap hairdresser has EVER been able to get right, even when i tell them to just trim it and follow the shape exactly.

what kind of hair do you want?

Paul has a mohawk... as for the shaving in stuff, I wouldn't have the slightest clue. Ask them, though.

I will now regale you with a story about how I got my head shaved.

I work near the city, and needed to get a haircut during my lunch break due to being extremely busy and working long hours at the time. So I Google a hairdresser and pick one of the first ones that come up: Trumps.

I stepped in and thought the decor was a little upmarket for a hairdresser, I sit down and am offered coffe/tea/wine, now I realise I'm proper fucked but still cling to the semblance of hope that maybe they won't charge me too much for just a shave. I tell him what I want, he looks confused:
"Have you had your hair shaped before? What product to you use?"
(I was ruffled and unkempt).
"No, just a shave."
"Oh, a shave..."

And he proceeds. I've never seen so much wank in my life. He gesticulates and postulates. At one stage my hair was a semi-mohawk.
"Oh look, you look like one of those people from Newtown" he jokes.
"I do live in Newtown" I state.
"Oh... errm."

And he continues. Admittedly he does a good job, but after the second shampoo, he pulls out some mint and starts rubbing it into my head. That's enough, I say. And walk to the counter to get this shit over and done with.

EIGHTY DOLLARS LATER.

I walk out feeling like the biggest ponce ever. I wouldn't go there if I was you. Unless you don't like money.

Are these the kind of haircuts I see ****s with the spray on jeans wandering around with? The ones where you think, fuck did that hurt?

^^ still maybe a girl which is why she is having doubts whether certain hairdressers will do it.

Although getting the beard effect in pic 1 will be a lot more difficult than the cut if that is the case.

I'm still shocked that this isn't a spambot thread

My suggestions would've been Furr and Doppelganger.

lol @ Marshy. Maybe if you're only shaving your head it would be smarter to invest in a $20 set of clippers? I can't believe he rubbed mint oil on your head! Did anyone at your work notice?

I love Marshy stories.

Can't offer any advice though. I've been cutting my own hair for the last few years & have only been to Sydney twice...

I shave my head.

I just thought you should know because it was a once-off cost of 30 bucks for the Breville clippers and a small mirror so I can see the back of my head.

I'm almost positive I look better than all you people throwing away your $15 an hour retail worker wage on 'funky', 'edgy' haircuts.

To the OP - why the fuck would you get such a ridiculous excuse for a hair cut? How could you be bothered with all the maintenance?

This, it pretty much only exists because of desired alternative looks and will cost a hellva lot cheaper than Braddles Ngata.

Thanks for the suggestions. Booking in with Doppelganger now.

And my name isn't a random series of letters generated by a spambot. It's welsh.
