Balance 016 - a plea to EQ... we need a return to form!

After giving Will Saul's effort 7 days to try and grow on my good books I've given up and now considering testing the retailer's refund policy... sorry, not a fan AT ALL

My vote list to the lads at EQ for the next release includes:

Henry Saiz
Cid Inc
Guy J
Ricky Ryan

I'm sure I'm not alone...

I've listened to one and two of Will Saul's installment, and some of three and I've like them for what they are. Good, tasteful music that relies on the listener to be in the right mood and have access to reasonable sound. I reckon disc two would come alive and belt it out after a night out and a couple of spliffs to top it off. I'm sure they will grow on me.

I just think that mix compilations have become harder and harder to get a good result from, as artists struggle to put together tracks that can rock but still sound fresh and new after a few listens. Being able to acess good music from live sets is a great thing, but I prefer the quality of sound on CD's, so I don't listen to live sets all the time and prefer to buy new CD releases.

I hope the Balance series doesn't go up its own ass, because the music it has provided over the years has been exceptional. I'd be happy with the next couple of installments to take on a more dance floor feeling for at least one of the discs.

This thread is stupid.

The Balance series is pretty much the most successful series going around..... every single release has been great in its own way.

You dislike a release or 2 and you say the series is out of form?

kidding yourself.....

Personally I think Sauls mix is great... it isnt the most flowing Balance but it is a great mix of tunes that Saul has dug deep into his collection to compile.... just because YOU dont like it doesnt mean the series is failing like you are implying.

Personal opinions come into this whole thing quite alot.... I dont think Guy J or Henry Saiz were very good when I saw them this year... would much prefer a mix from someone like PQM... in fact I think PQM would do a mindblowing 3 CD release.... he has a much bigger range than someone like Guy J.

Would be quite the coup if they could get Digweed to do one when he comes out here.

i haven't heard will sauls mix, but also regardless of what it sounds like, i certainly don't think EQ/Balance have dropped any form overall.

the fact is most of the balance series are fairly unique mixes in their own ways, there always seems to be something different on the boil. not all to my taste it has to be said, but they are pretty unique in letting a wide range of artists really distill what their sound is about in each mix

I don't think that they've dropped form either. Although I'm not a huge fan of every cd in the series, I think they do a much better job at keeping things interesting that other labels like GU. That said, I'd love to see any of these for the next release

Haven't liked any since Burridge actually... but hey if you guys want the thread title changed coz it insults your sensitivities, I'll have it changed!

Personally I was more meaning a return to the two-disc, tight-as, condensed and compacted format, where there was less opportunity for the chosen DJ to get distracted by shite music for the sake of some artistic wankery - the new format just doesn't seem as dynamic or vibrant to me as the old

(waits for Regurgitator references)

I wouldnt mind someone like Luciano to do one. After hearing his essential mix i think Dusty Kid could pull out something nice. M.A.N.D.Y, Tiefschwarz or Timo Maas would be cool.

As for all time wishes i would say Sasha & Diggers, one disc each and the final a combine effort. The other all time wish would be Peace Division, although i dont even think they are together anymore.

I love Will Saul's mix. As someone else mentioned, these releases have to compete with podcasts and downloads of live sets; why would I pay for a compilation that mimics a live set I could get for free?

Reading the booklet that accompanies the release is quite illuminating. Saul was given a blank canvas to do whatever he wanted with; he wanted to dig a little deeper than the latest club bangers and create something that would stand the test of time; thus the majority of the tracks are vinyl only releases or tunes that are out of print. Also, it was mixed in real time.

It seems to me he's chosen 60 of his favourite tracks and worked out how to put them together. Every track is great, and the programming and mixing, considering the variety of styles, is impeccable.

Disc 1 is perfect arvo warm-up listening, disc 2 has more of an after hours feel and disc 3 rapidly progresses from soul to some house with a massive groove.

It's clearly put together by a guy with a love and knowledge of a variety of styles. I get the RA and tothebone podcasts for more typical club-based fare, and thus expect something special from a purchased release that will stand the test of time.

I see this as similar to Fat Boy Slim's amazing and timeless Late Night Tales mix, a release I still go back to on a nearly weekly basis. It's not a club set, but it's a collection of music from the heart.

It's one of the most luscious mixes I've heard in ages! It sounds and tastes like watching the sunrise at the beach! The perfect accompaniment to a Mojito or 6. This mix in particular takes me to a special place.

Have to say on the whole I prefer live sets . If I buy a compilation it will be because it is different !! You can get great quality on live sets now. The way some of the Djs are handling their music lately , they are giving us some really great stuff. Soundcloud has opened up a whole new world

I guess what I was getting at is I expect a compilation that I have paid for to really stand out as something unique, whereas a live set obviously caters to the club context. I believe this was also motivating Will Saul's selections.

In terms of sound quality on live set, when you're a full time Masters student essentially also working full time, the marginal difference in sound quality isn't really worth blowing $25 on! If I'm going to pay for something it better be special!

Retarded whining? Wank? Are you an expert on these matters?

So you mean I can't have an opinion on a musical release? Ok prior to me posting any new threads on here I'll ask you what your opinion is so that I'm not in disagreeance

Nice alias by the way..

I'm still at uni, so I know the pain of wanting to buy so much more music than I can afford. I just get annoyed by dj's who can put together a great live set (and I don't mean just playing one monster after another all night) but feel that they have to make something different or eclectic to stand out when putting together a cd. It's so frustrating falling in love with a dj's sound through their live sets only to spend $30 on a cd and find that its full of dull/uninspiring music that they've used in an effort to give the cd artistic merit by being unique.

So you mean I can't have an opinion on a musical release? Ok prior to me posting any new threads on here I'll ask you what your opinion is so that I'm not in disagreeance

Nice alias by the way..

Na its just the thread title that grabbed my gheydar stick and pointed it squarely at you....

" Balance 016 - a plea to EQ... we need a return to form!"

You can have an opinion on a music al release but to sit there and say that the whole series isnt good and its out of form because you havent liked the last few releases (despite a fuckload of people loving them) is a little retarded.

Fagatron, he didn't say the whole series isn't good. He said that in his opinion it was out of form. Which, by definition of the phrase, means that the series once had form. In simple terms so you can grasp it: Balance used to be good. Furthermore richcur clarified that he hasn't liked any since Burridge (12) implying that he did like at least one previous release.

Now take your gheydar stick or whatever and go sit in the corner.

Fagatron.2, sorry I insulted you and your lover.

I will try to be a better person from now on.

We are hardly lovers, cum fountain. I personally have no issue with the balance series and have enjoyed all the recent releases.

i agree with the compilation becoming less appealing.

My favs were Phil K, James Holden, Chris Fortier, to me these compilations were masterpieces, i think Desyn was the start of something bad, Will Sauls compilation is not my style at all, i really think it is mixed badly, it has no flow. its like he has downloaded some tunes and just randomly put them together, i dont know, maybe im missing something, but usually if i hear a cd once and i hate it, i put it back in its case and put it in away, forever.

my vote is... Magda
