James Mac - The Artist Currently Known As Prince

Fuck i find it hard to actually finish a song. Anyways, this is a track i made over the last week. Still can't get the kind of kick i'm after. Defiantly something i need to work on.

hey sounds cool right from the start. atmospheric dark stuff from the get go. if anything the kick seems to be lacking any real transient punch. maybe it's squashed too much? it's balanced to my ears just not punching through with enough attack. in fact most of the mix seems to be lacking transient punch. just taking a guess but maybe your squashing the initial attack out of sounds too much thus giving a flat mix. the mix sounds balanced to me just flat. I'm A/B'ing your track with some similar pro tracks and that's what i'm hearing anyhow.

You could be right on the money. Tbh, i don't really know what values i should be putting into my compressors so i find myself just fiddling randomly til i get close to the kind of sound i want. I'll play around some more and see if i can give those kicks a bit more strength. They seem weak even with no compression too tho. It feels like i'm missing something else.
