Hi all,
I realise I may be crossing a line here but I just got the latest mail out from Angus, our editor. I fully understand how at a ruckus, high end commercial live show the atmosphere can get the best of all of us. So I'm not commenting on the Potbelleez gig itself, more how it has been portrayed by what is, as I understand, a very influential website in the electronic scene in Australia. It is my belief (and I'm far from a tree hugger here folks!) that the form of "dance music" (i quote our editor) came from the Acid House movement (and if you really want to go back disco, before that, soul, and before that, rock, and before that Jazz). I may be a little old to be starting threads in forums and all that but, should the editor, surely the "voice" of inthemix really be making comments about communities and the public's portrayal of "dance music" as... "I'm imagining shocked parents covering the ears of their children, the oldies running from the venue with distressed looks on their faces; the religious raising crosses in defiance. Looks like the Potbelleez brought to Townsville a little slice of a Kings Cross club at 3am on Sunday morning... Go on, you f@*king show 'em how it's done!" "Go on, you f@*king show 'em how it's done!" ?? Really? I suggest we all go to the library and take out a copy of Sheryll Garratt's "Adventures in Wonderland" or visit djhistory.com and remember why we all fell in love with the music, the culture, the lifestyle in the first place. Again, I'm not having a go, I feel the journalism here was a little heavy handed and portrays the antithesis of what we're about. I welcome comments. Anyway, seeya down the front at Ame on Saturday! ^ I think you're right though I think it may have got lost in translation.
As for music snobbery, correct me if I'm wrong, but that is what ITM majors in and have been known to bag out the Potbelleez in the past. Many times might I add. Just because Angus wrote the article doesn't mean you all have to kiss his arse and agree. Though I suppose it is his job to write nice things about acts/ DJs for publicity reasons. :shrug:
