VOID & BASS HIGH pres APPLEBLIM 'UK' (Skull Disco / Tempa) / Fri Dec 11 / Mercat
![]() The long awaited tour of Skull Disco and Applepips front man APPLEBLIM happens in December. He hits Melbourne on December 11th in the basement of the Mercat Cross with a unique party combining Melbourne’s first Dubstep night BASS HIGH and Sydney’s premier Dubstep night VOID. An all-star line-up has been assembled combining both Sydney and Melbourne Dj’s plus two of the most recognisable producers of Dubstep and Bass music in Australia, HARMONIC 313 (aka Mark Pritchard) and SPHERIX. APPLEBLIM is one of the most unique producers and DJ’s in Dubstep. Known for his deep Techno inspired productions, he is equally as known for his banging DJ sets and an ability to move seamlessly from dubstep and grime to banging techno and anything else that will get the floor moving. He has toured internationally numerous times and played all the biggest raves on the planet and a regular at the spiritual home of Dubstep, FWD>> club in London. With releases on labels Skull Disco, Applepips, Tempa, Immerse , Berkane Sol and a Resident Advisor podcast under his belt, Appleblim is without question one of the big guns in the Dubstep scene. ![]() MARK PRITCHARD stepped into the music business in the early 90’s, teamed up with Tom Middleton and formed Global Communication and recorded under many different styles of music under various project names to much critical acclaim. Most recently he records as HARMONIC 313 on WARP, HYPERDUB and DEEP MEDI MUSIK and collaborates with Steve Spacek creating some of the most original productions in todays music world. ![]() SPHERIX is one of Australia biggest Dubstep exports. Influenced heavily by minimal and dub techno, he has had numerous releases on respected international labels including, Immerse, 3.5 Recordings, Tube 10, Bare Dubs, Subcontinental Dub and On The Edge Records. After considerable time in the studio working on a heap of new material SPHERIX is set to unleash his next generation of bass heavy beats at what is set to be one cracker of a night. ![]() To round off a stellar line-up with have VOID Dj’s VICTIM and PAUL FRASER (also front man to AQUATIC LAB RECORDS) making the trip from Sydney to see how the Melbourne scene rolls and bring their own selections of unique and interesting beats. KAMO is there too and none of you need an intro on this man, one longest serving representatives of Dubstep in Melbourne, you know this guy has the tunes to get the floor moving. VOID & BASS HIGH present APPLEBLIM “UK” (Applepips, Skull Disco, Tempa) Line-up APPLEBLIM (Applepips, Skull Disco, Tempa) HARMONIC 313 (Warp Records, Hyperdub, Deep Medi) SPHERIX (Immerse, Subcontinental Dub) PAUL FRASER (Aquatic Lab, Void) VICTIM (Void) KAMO (Bass High) Friday December 11th , Mercat Basement, 495 Queen Street Melbourne 10pm – 4am, $20 presale via qjump.com.au / more on door.. Starting in Bristol, it shot over the Channel and headed for the middle ground between itself and Berlin, to unite in a shared love of Jamaican bass, delay and space with a little Detroit groove. Dubstep Allstars 6, mixed by Appleblim, is perhaps the definitive and most coherent document of this outbreak. In essence the mix brings together many of the pioneers of this sound, from Bristol’s Peverelist, RSD, Pinch, Komanazmuk and Appleblim, and blends in the fellow sonically if not geographically contiguous experimenters, such as Martyn, TRG, 2562 and Ramadanman. It is expertly mixed, selected and arranged such that it soon feels like a whole, as if the lines between the tracks, not to mention the moods, reference points or genres, are rendered meaningless. While currently and originally a Bristolian, Appleblim spent some time in London in ‘94. It was to prove influential: “‘the one’ really,” as he himself puts it, in his usual enthusiastic tone. “We just caught the bug: listening to the radio, finding out what was going on and picking up our first jungle tunes.” Like many of dubstep’s pioneers, be it Loefah, Burial or Kode9, Appleblim had caught the jungle bug and through it, developed a love of dub, bass and dark spaces that would keep him in good stead later. He learned to mix on a mate’s set of decks but thought little more of it. In fact the world might not have known more of Appleblim were he have not discovered a club called Forward>>, later to be recognised as the birthplace of dubstep, and a friend called Shackleton. Appleblim and Shackleton shared a love of two things: percussive 2004 era dubstep like Digital Mystikz’ “Conference” (later released on Soul Jazz) and Berlin’s Burial Mix, the most overtly dubby label of the techy German bass and space pioneers, Basic Channel. Together Appleblim and Shackleton formed the unique Skull Disco label which became best known for releasing Shackleton’s, uniquely dark, paranoid and organic percussion jams. But while Shackleton was gaining recognition as a producer of uncompromising vision, Appleblim was quietly working on his direction as a DJ. “I’m not a creator in the same kind of way [as producer Shackleton],” he explains. “I’m more the person who carries tapes and records around to people’s houses, being the one sat next to the stereo going ‘oi, check out this!’ That’s what I feel like I’m still doing now.” Dubstep Allstars6: welcome to Appleblim’s personal stereo. At the beginning of 2007, Appleblim, like many of the headz who have attended the club religiously only to turn into participants, got asked to play at the very space that had inspired him and Shackeleton, Forward>>. “It’s very strange going from being a raver who was there obsessively down the front to going to someone standing behind the decks. It’s definitely an honour: I’ve had countless epiphanies down there, so if I can give people a few of those then that’s my job done.” While he plays down the role of sets in Bath where he first met fellow Bristolians Pinch, Peverelist and Blazey, and also the Skull Disco parties in Stoke Newington, Appleblim cites his opportunity to play at Forward>> as a turning point in his DJing. “Before that, I’d felt I’d either tried to fit too many or the wrong style into my sets. But I made a conscious decision, and Sarah had told me to do this too, to stick to my guns.” By taking Ammunition’s words as firepower, Appleblim found the trajectory you now find on this CD. Perhaps techno, like hardcore, will never die. Early dubsteppers were as influenced by it as the UK garage scene the genre grew out of, be it Horsepower and El-B’s love of Basic Channel, Artwork’s blatant Jeff Mills influence on “Basic G” or the warm tech of DJ Abstract’s “Touch.” But certainly the case that Detroit and Euro techno’s influence on dubstep had at least moved to the background before Appleblim and friends began to gather momentum. Now an entire sub-movement seems to be gathering pace underneath the dubstep umbrella. The boundaries between dubby techno and techy dubstep seem to have dissolved. The critical question is, however, will the upshot be more than or less than the sum of its parts? Are we headed for “dubstep” sets that are little more than rigid 140bpm techno? Will it become totally clean formless e-lead headspace, with the edge, the rude awakening of the urban bass injection lost? Appleblim is unconcerned. “I think there’s a lot of genre blurring going on,” he explains “and there is a sort of a danger that it will become 140bpm techno, but the answer is [that] it needs to retain some funk and swing. Having said that I try to just view great music as great music, and always have, so that I might play a tune by a ‘dubstep’ producer that sounds essentially like a ‘techno’ tune… in the end, if it moves you it moves you…” On Dubstep Allstars 6, it’s certainly got your organs in motion, both your feet and your heart. Built around two emotional peaks, first the early glory of Pinch’s brave diva house dubstep “Get Up”, and towards the end, Martyn’s warm and synthy anthem, “Broken Hearts remix.” “I wanted the mix to be a representation of what I play in the clubs, a mixture of unreleased exclusive dubplates and some big tunes that I helped to break… I was amongst the first to play [some of] these tunes out, and wanted to give more exposure to tracks that I really think are phenomenal.” “Obviously it’s a bit of a clichι to start mellow and work upwards but I find it works for me: the harder tracks have much more impact if you have played some spacious, deeper, more ‘head’ music first. I like to build a set, not always start with bangers. I like to create an atmosphere.” Space is the place. Martin Clark aka Blackdown LDN, Summer 2008 Last edited by VOID : 06-Nov-09 at 05:09pm. |

Appleblim interview by Simon Hampson
www.symbiosis.com.au Laurie Osbourne is a producer who refuses to be tied down to one sound. He found his home in the Dubstep scene and has brought his exploratory ear and constant urge to push things forward to the table. Fusing the 'Berlin sound', dub techno and house with the Dubstep template his productions as Appleblim are unique and his mixes are coveted. Coupled with his work on his label Applepips, Osbourne is a producer to take notice of. **First.. let me say how much I have been enjoying your interview from RBMA last year (http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/v..._way_out_west#) and the radio show you did with Gerd. Have you connected with Gerd since then and do you guys have plans to do more? I haven't, and I feel very bad about it! He's a cool guy and a cool dj, and the Red Bull crew are great people **What other connections and realisations did you get out of RBMA? It is such a great thing they are doing...It was really just inspiring to meet lots of heads all into making music in one place... I met Todd Osborne, and Patrick Pulsinger, who are great examples of technical mavericks still making amazing music.... plus i got to dj with Skepta spitting over my set!! Serious dream come true bizniss...! **You have a very DIY approach from what I read and see. How has your history in bands and the like affected your approach to computer-driven, 'electronic' music? It's all one continuum really but I wonder if you feel that your attitude is a little different than other artists/label owners. I guess you're always a product of you're history. Yeah I come from a different background musically perhaps to some other producers, but I think really it hasn't affected my production so much... I am on a learning curve all the time - I feel like my journey has only just begun - but maybe being in bands and has exposed me to influences other havn't had.... **Related to that last question.. Tell me a bit about your history and the artists/bands that inspired you growing up. Did you come from a musical family or was it your own discovery/rebellion? My folks were music heads without being hippies, but they brought me up on Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Beatles and Stones, Jackson Browne, and of course the obligatory Fleetwood Mac and Womack and Womack! They always encouraged me and my brother with music - we learned piano and so on - but gave it all up when we were 15 and discovering John peel, The Smiths, Madchester etc...but they've always been massively supportive, I couldn't be where I am now without their help. **Let's take things back. In 2005 you said: "I went to FWD>> in 2003 with my mate Necta Selecta, and it just blew my mind. It was the most excited about 'dance' music I had been since the heady days of Jungle / D&B round 95/96 at which time I was in London, going to Metalheadz, Jungle Fever etc... I just caught the bug at FWD!!" (http://dubster.blogspot.com/2005/11/...#8232; I wonder.. Do you still feel that excitement towards music? How has your rise in notoriety and the business of the labels (Skull Disco & Applepips) affected the 'fun' of it for you? I do, though it is strange going from a fan primarily to a dj/producer primarily... I havn't lost the buzz but there are less opportunities for me to go out and get blown away by music simply because it is my job now to try and do that for other people... Also i dont think that time can ever come again, they were unique tunes, unique clubs, and my head was in a unique state then... I am still absolutely inspired by music, but its in different areas now perhaps.. **I you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be? Keep a good diary, and get a frickin accountant! **What is the relationship between performing live and studio production for you? I don't really perform live, i only dj so thats obviously two very different things... Both are still a journey for me, I'm still nowhere near where I want to be skillwise in any of those areas, but i see that as a challenge,... **Applepips has been going from strength to strength.. I'm sure there are a lot of lessons that you learnt though Skull Disco that you have applied here, right? I don't know about that! Shackleton really took on most of the day to day running of Skull Disco, with me being more of a media hype man! So in that sense I am learning things and doing things for the first time, all the time, with Pips... But i learnt a lot from Shack, and also from working at Tempa and Ammunition, that was very inpspiring, to be working with the original Dubstep label and club, they taught me a lot. **The Applepips label has a very strong asthetic. Who designed the logo and sleeves? www.giveupart.com BADMAN! as important as the music **What releases are coming up or Applepips? Pips010 - greena - tenzado will be out before the year is through...Then in the new year, 12"s from orphan101, joe, komonazmuk, hopefully arkist, and other bristol producers... **What are your own plans for Appleblim releases in the near future? I heard that you're working on a Prins Thomas remix right now!! Prins Thomas got in touch for a remix which i am MASSIVELY stoked out as he is hands down the best dj ive seen in the last few years...but he hasnt got back to me yet...Prins...if yr reading this.....HOLLA BACK!!! **What are your top 5 tracks right now? al tourettes - she shimmers komonazmuk - dance to data - fall of phaeton roska and hardhouse banton - warning instra:mental - no future (asc refix) |

Was an ok night, was good to have a new experience of a new genre of music that i have not listened to previously in the past. My favourite was Harmonic 313, he had more deversity in terms of playing techno/prog compared to the other acts but all round a good night out so good work Void for putting on such a cool gig.

what a killer vibe! Appleblim rocked it as expected and typical smashing set from Pritchard too. Paul Fraser and Spherix set the mood early on with some deep rolling beats. Loose crowd you lot who definately know how to party and are open to new sounds. We had a ball and so did Appleblim who was on the floor until the last tune was played. Killer night. Void and Bass High will be back in the new year..
