DS lite or ipod touch for a child?
ok, so Christmas is approaching.
My nearly 6 year old wants an DS for Christmas right? Santa is bringing her a small iriver also (the mickey mouse one) as we are planning to do a reasonable amount of car travelling next year. All is going well until I caught up with a mate who (rightly) pointed out that an 8gig ipod touch will be about the same price as the DS, let alone including the iriver. I'm pretty anti apple on most things, but I can't help considering the option. I think the DS is a pretty awesome little unit, and with the homebrew stuff - makes it even more awesome. Couple that with a mate who has a billion games for one, it becomes mighty mighty attractive. But the ipod touch has awesome games too, I can jailbreak it for even more awesomeness plus its an mp3 player so its only one device. I hope that the size of it also would make it more difficult for her to forget (although its not going to school anyways..) So, ITM heads - convince me either way?

I would say seperate, even tho an itouch has both music and games, compared to DS games they would be shit.. i'm sure your 6 yr old would love it more if he/she had both..

Normally I wouldn't recommend an Apple product, but the ipod touch is a perfect gift for a 6 yr old child.

I reckon the Touch is a goer. Little kids don't care about "real" gaming controls. And the hinge will never break.

Cyclo is all sorts of awesome. I think 6-year olds would enjoy the DS more than an iPod. Kids are generally going to be more interested in games and the DS will have games based on pretty much every franchise your child will ever be a fan of, whereas choice on the Touch will be more limited. I personally also see the iPod Touch as a stepping stone to a mobile phone which I would be discouraging young kids to desire/pester me for. Don't forget also that DS games can be bought second-hand and or flogged when no longer wanted, whereas iPod Apps you have all the DRM you could ever ask for.

DS for sure, it'll cost more but is a lot more accessible and varied as a gaming platform.

DS, alot more fun factor, games take alot longer and are more involving...
Touch games are more about killing time ie train ride home... i River and DS for the win, that will keep them entertained for ages! + its not like a 6 year old is going to have a great deal of music, and the camera on the DS wilml provide some further entertainment |

DS is going to have games the kid wants ie. disney and other movie games.
Load it up with R4 revolution card and you've got a media player up to 32gig depending on what MSDHC you buy.

Even though I'm usually in the Apple camp I'd go the DS in this case. The Touch is more a mini-computing platform than a gaming device- it does a lot of things pretty well, but a 6 year old aint gonna be interested in 90% of them. Nintendo have always gone after the kiddie market harder than Denis Fergusson, so the DS is gonna have plenty to keep her entertained.

How many times did you ask Santa for something only to have him deliver either a cheap rip off or something entirely different altogether? If you get a Touch then you're ripping off the kids future dude! Do you remember the time Dad bought me a Sega Game Gear (because it had COLOR) when all I wanted was a Game Boy? Of course you wouldn't, you weren't there man, you don't know the harsh reality of what it was like. They were dark times, man. Dark.
Brand recognition is one of the leading forces behind a childs 'want' factor, and if that kid doesn't get her Nintendo then she's going to be streaming tears of dissapointment. Do you really think she cares what technical advantages the iPod touch has over the DS? No. She wants Barbie race and ride on two mother fucking screens, not iPeggleDuelUx and Donkey Fanger 2000 on a jailbroken piece of Canpannotry. Seriously, the game catalogue for the DS accomodates for little girls, Touch does not.

For some reason my brain was reading keywords as the complete opposite of what I was deciphering them as. I'm running off of 3 hours sleep and a powernap here. Makes me backpeddle more than J-Rod on a 6-geared unicycle on a steep hill.

DS lite and iriver. I thought on it a fair bit last night and I think the DS has heaps more appeal for the kids. Also a few of her friends have them so they'll be able to play against each other and shit. I also hate apple so thats another reason not to get one.
