Arrow GPO's "Discovered" DJ Comp: The Battle Lost!

Hey people unfortunately for myself i missed out on making the top two in my heat last friday night in the GPO discovered DJ competition!

But since i worked pretty hard on my mix I thought it would be a waste to not share it with people.

It's a bit of a cheeky mix and all the tracks were carefully selected because of their lyrics which either was about 'being in a battle or 'being the best'

The mix also crosses a bunch of genres hopefully in a way that makes sense to people, It's also more something you would watch and listen!

Tracks used / sampled within the mix:

Doug E Fresh & MC Ricky D - La Di Da Di (Acapella)
Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels
Cypress Hill - Insane In The Brain
House Of Pain - Jump Around
ACDC – TNT
Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger
Beastie Boys – Intergalactic
Pharoahe Monch - Simon Says (Bombstrikes Remix)
Pharoahe Monch - Simon Says (Acapella)
David Bowie - Let's Dance
George Kranz - Din Daa Da
Bob Marley – Jammin
Technotronic - Pump Up The Jam
Technotronic - Pump Up The Jam (Acapella)
Chase & Status - Eastern Jam
DJ Assault - Tear The Club Up
Steppenwolf - Born To Be Wild
Kanye West - Amazing (Instrumental)
Scribe - Not Many (Acapella)
Lil Wayne - A Milli (Acapella)
KRS One - Step Into A World
Missy Elliott – Get Ur Freak On (Acapella)

This is the live recording from the the GPO discovered DJ competition Friday 20th November!

Enjoy!

nah mate have a listen..

it was mixed on a pair of technic 1210 and djm800 using serato, a lot of the tracks had been re-edit (shortening tracks, taking acapella snippets etc..) using ableton

To be honest mate, there are a shit load of tunes on there that i like, but there was something about the mix that didn't grab me.

Some of the mixing was pretty bland and i'm sure you could have made some of the songs even shorter, as a few seemed to drag on for too long.

tidy mix mate and a pretty gutsy effort for throwing something like this down in that comp.........shame you didnt get through!

even if you cut that shit up like qbert, the track listing is still way too predictable and overplayed
all thats missing is lets talk about sex :p

it might work at mystique or in a city club but i cant see it really working for gpo

I not going to listen, but definitely try and keep these two tracks apart;

Cypress Hill - Insane In The Brain
House Of Pain - Jump Around

I love both the tracks, but it's almost too obvious a choice to mix the two, especially for a competition mix

Hey thanks to the people who took the time out to listen to the mix… and to those that haven’t yet don’t be put off by the fact that some people on here didn’t enjoy it / don’t understand it...

For this mix I decided I wanted to make sure I would put out something completely different to what everyone else was doing, I could have easily selected my current favorite house tracks and mixed them smoothly for 20 minutes but I thought that wouldn’t really be anything different to what everyone else would be doing…

So I decided to theme my mix as a ‘battle’ and try to create a story within the mix… and the story is told through each song and the lyrics within the song...

Hopefully that makes sense I can’t be bothered going through each song and explaining how they link hopefully you’ll be able to pick it out yourself…

Also what I meant by ‘it’s also more something you would watch and listen’ is that in these 20 minutes I wasn’t trying to play tracks that people would dance and party to, I was trying to tell a story within these 20 minutes and I wanted people standing there watching me mix and listening to the songs trying to figure out what this is all about, and how do these songs link… maybe that sounds crazy but yeah that’s just what I felt like doing...

just had a listen. i understand what u were trying to do, and mass props for going out on a limb, but it didnt work imo.

especially the first half was just a bunch of old commercial tracks with some scratching in between. i think instead of focusing on the lyrics, u should rather be focusing on what the song 'says', so to speak.. the vibe. all your mix said to me was 'i listen to too much 4K-wikkity-Q'

I understand wat u were doing and massive props for doing it...

it is refreshing to see u do that in such a major comp (massive risk) and also to see the honest opinions...

I'm streaming it now - not my flavor but don't hate it...

But isn't this exactly what the Yacht Club djs do? I heard a set of theirs on JJJ on a Friday afternoon and it was pretty much the worst dj set I've ever heard.

I think a problem some people will have with this set is that, irrespective of editing and mixing, all of these tracks are frightfully over-played. Presumably pretty much everyone on here listens to a lot of music and is only really going to dig a set if it features a majority of tracks they haven't heard before.

In short, I understand what you may have been trying to do, but you've got to dig a LOT deeper.

I dont think he is talking underground, but in the scope of what he is trying to do there is much better songs that could have been used... I mean eye of the tiger... is so overplayed in movies/ads/radio/sports carnivals....

You're right, and given how crowded the scene is with people with DJing aspirations, as punters we can afford to be fussy and expect to hear only the very very best in the clubs we frequent!

There's plenty of local jocks who can get me dancing to stuff I've never heard before, and the ones that rely on familiarity alone to get a floor moving simply aren't all that good at what they do.
