Motor City Drum Ensemble Fri 4th Dec @ Sorry Grandma!

whatson pending

woooooo hooooooooo!

Easily one of the most exciting artists to emerge in the scene over the past 2 years, we are estatic to present to you Motor City Drum Ensemble at Sorry Grandma! Possibly the most anticipated gig of 2009 Danilo Plessow has been re-defining the house genre with his sampledelic raw cuts series as well as a plethora of remixes for everyone who's anyone.

More info: A Stuttgart native (hence the Motor City reference within his best known alias, it being Germany’s answer to Detroit along with Frankfurt), Danilo Plessow has been dabbling in the deeper shades of dance since his early teenage years.

With his inimitable Raw Cuts series seamlessly joining the dots between classic Chicago House, Detroit Techno and New York Disco (via Stuttgart, of course), and gaining support from every DJ with taste and ears (pretty much), Plessow’s take on dance music references its rich history while always pushing its boundaries. The multi-faceted nature of the MCDE sound is made even more impressive by the fact that its perpetrator is yet to celebrate his 25th birthday!

From the age of 17 Danilo has been gaining props for his recorded output, first for the Jazzy House and Broken Beat cuts created under the Inverse Cinematics moniker with his friend Joachim Tobias, which issued several 12”s, numerous remixes and one LP. Since the MCDE project came to life in 2008, Mr Plessow has been on something of a dream run, to date issuing 6 volumes of the Raw Cuts series which have united fans of deep Disco and deeper House with their distinctive cut and paste flavour.

2009 has already seen the MCDE remix touch applied to scene stalwarts DJ T, Steve Bug, Jazzanova, DJ Sprinkles and Toby Tobias among others, with original productions for 20:20 Vision and Mule Musiq also delighting dancers all over. Meanwhile, Mr P’s MCDE label and Four Roses imprint (a collaboration with Mujaba) continue to turn heads, and DJ bookings keep the passport stamps coming for Danilo (recent jaunts include the UK, US and Russia), leading to the conclusion that the only way continues to be up for Motor City Drum Ensemble.

Support from: Jason Martin Pauly Main, Knightlife, Otologic, Ooh-ee and Andee Frost.

Entry: $20 tickets will be available on the door, PRESALES available via MOSHTIX – http://www.moshtix.com.au/event.aspx?id=31861

miniflyer!

disparities in scenes I would suggest, Melbourne is the "techno" city,

I didn't intend to imply that Sydney is the "house" city, but all I know is that they've had a healthy disco/house scene up there for some time now and have consequently adapted better to the greater shift toward house music than here.

No doubt the presence of Future Classic has assisted greatly as their Berlin Sessions parties up there have been extremely well attended, plus did you realise that Sascha Dive very recently toured here and did shows in Sydney and Brisbane but not Melbourne? I'm not a huge Dive fan but I still wouldn't have minded seeing him spin.

Now we have MCDE playing for five hours up there.

As I said, disparities in scenes...

he is contracted to play 2 hours it's pretty standard with most artists to be contracted for a MINIMUM amount of time these days most artist choose 90 mins.... however this doesn't mean he will only play 2 hours set times are just a suggestion. and so people don't get mad should he choose to only play the minimum required time.

we leave that decision up to the artist on the night.

obviously if it's rocking we won't be kicking him off until he is ready to finish. if history is anything to go by he will play longer as has been the way with most of our international guests, trus'me and jacques renault played their 2 hours each then played back to back till the close of the room, stacey pullen played and extra hour, erol alkan also played an extra hour, so it's really up to the crowd to make the party ! these people travel half way around the world to play i doubt any artist would jump off until they have given the crowd their monies worth!

the sydney promoters (co-op) are the people responsible for bringing danilo to the country so of course they have had a bit more influence in what he does for their show.

i would happily let danilo play the whole night should he wish to but i guess we will find out when he gets here on friday how he would like to play it.

since house died in the arse in melbourne. remember in 2004/05 when that bumpy funky sound was really popular? it was awesome and house promoters really prospered. times have certainly changed!

also the sound of house has changed and in that 'commercial' semi-underground scene it's kind of popular now, but most of it is that german deeper stuff which is great too btw!

Oh I see, that explains the buzz re: Johnny D, Nick Curly, Henrik Schwarz, MCDE, Move D and Isolee!

How can "underground" be popular? Surely if it's popular it's underground no more!

yes exactly. it's not really underground, lol more like a faux underground, where the punters can feel like they are somewhere a little bit more special than all that cheesy mainstream shit.

If you hit the beatport top 10 you've sold out, often through no fault of your own.

What if, say a jockey, let's call him Dj Tom, an ace dj in the underground scene. He happened to release a track that exploded, and reached no. 5 in Beatport top 10.

Should said DJ stop playing his own track to maintain his 'cred'?

Yes, he should let David Guetta play it. In doing so he retains 'cred' and can say to fans "I stopped playing that song months ago, I never really liked it anyway"

So that's why Radiohead stopped playing "Creep" live!

It's pretty hard to be a good underground dj isn't it? So many rules to follow!!

It's definitely a balancing act, you can tell the real underground ones by the smell.

The rule seems pretty clear cut.

No balancing act required there.

really depends on how you define popular... if 900 people like it which is about the max capacity of the venues hosting the act's u mentioned up there, then it's still underground is it not? considering hardly any of these bigger shows sell out then it's hardly mainstream like say Steve Ajoki, in many cases selling out/crossing over is not the artists choice, but it's hard to say no to money ! i know i'd much prefer to have no-one like my music and be broke but still maintain my credibility with a bunch of people on the internet
