ah bullshit I've been there plenty of times when there's just nothing there.

it's a pain in the ass as a dive site as well. but when there's good life it's a great dive.

^^ I'll talk her into it. Don't worry about that!

So apparently my dive instructor sent a group txt that we're starting at 9am instead of 7:30am, naturally being on the Vodafone network I didn't receive it. If I didn't get up at 5:30am to get here on time it probably wouldn't've bothered me as much

If that's the worst that happens today though I really can't complain about it.

Theory day was ok... It probably didn't help that it was delayed a couple of times and I filled out the question and answer book about a month ago.

There was a last minute addition to the group who signed up last night and hadn't done her theory book yet, so it wasn't the most structured of lessons.

Failed the multiple choice the first time and had to re-sit. Partially because there was a fair bit not covered during the training. Passed easily enough second time round though, getting up at 5:30am didn't help with the mental alertness either.

Bugger, i'm getting up around then (probably earlier) tomorrow to go down to shellharbour for a dive

Did a discover scuba dive today at malabar in about 1m vis. Terrible dive, but the folks got out and said 'best experience ever!'. They'll be back for OW

I've got a bit of a sleep in tomorrow, don't have to be there till 9.

The instructor turned out to be the store owner rather than the guy I work with. I'm sure the experience will get a bit better over the next few days. Now that I think about it though: I tend to grasp concepts a lot quicker than most people, and once I've understood them I tend not to ask for any further help or assistance (I was the only one in our class who didn't have any trouble comprehending the dive tables in the homework book, I also grasped the concept of Boyle's Law a lot quicker than everyone else) and while I certainly wasn't arrogant or cocky about it, I probably could've asked more questions than I actually did. I might try it tomorrow, just for the sake of engaging him a bit more and seeing if I can get a bit more out of it.

I also had a look on his website, day trips to Tweed for $50 and Cook Islands for $140, he also lives near me and said there's no probs picking me up on the way through for trips so probably best to keep him on my good side

Pool dive was heaps of fun today, we all grasped everything easily and our instructor was happy with our progress. Went through about 150 bar, the girl in our class went through her entire tank… and then some. Shore dive Monday, then hopefully boat dive on Thursday.

I'm not a strong swimmer, I alternated between freestyle and breast stroke but still managed to wear myself out, I tried floating for bits of it, but some people are just naturally positively buoyant, unfortuantely for me I'm negatively buoyant.

Yep, the swim is not a race, and then it's simply being able to not drown for ten minutes. Had a great dive at shellharbour today, bushrangers bay. Saw some rock cod, couple of schools of different fish, just a great, relaxed dive otherwise. Can't wait to edit these vids, got some great in focus footage that's giving me some serious wood.

Alright, I'm getting a bit ahead of myself a little here, I'm looking at clocking up a few dives and eventually doing the SSI Advanced Adventurer Course.

Here's the two courses within my area: http://www.brisbanediving.com/traini...age.php/1/8/42 & http://www.divexsite.com/node/36

Basically as far as I can tell, Pros of each:
DiveXsite
- Already know and been doing my OW with the instructor
- Cheaper (works out the same if you disregard the wetsuit included in the Snorkel Safari package)
- Possibly more personalised approach

Snorkel Safari
- 5 dives included instead of 6 (SSI website only has 5 listed in the course on their website)
- Seems to be a lot more structured
- Probably a bit more professional and a little less personalised
- Looks like they've got a nicer boat, air conditioned buses etc.
- Probably has better prices on gear

Is there more anything I can tell from either? Snorkel Safari looks little nicer, but all I can really tell from their website is they probably have a fair bit more money to spend on nice things (like a nicer website, nice boat, nice buses etc) where as DiveXsite is primarily a one man shop.

Any thoughts/opinions or am I doing my usual Angus thing and over thinking this way too much?

I wouldn't worry about gear prices. once you become "known" at a local dive store (LDS) you'll be getting huge discounts off the RRP's. it's the same as DJ gear, the RRP is inflated about 30% or so on what the shop has to sell it for to make money. Don't be afraid to haggle and you have the likes of Dave, Nik, me and others to bounce information off to see if you're getting bullshitted.

I was pretty upfront when i said i wanted to do the DM course so frogdive did a good deal to get me in their lines of gear over buying from the US... Even still, US pricing is a dickload better than Australian even when you include freight... for the tech gear that I'm looking for (BP&wing + sidemount gear) I'm looking at a 12% reduction including freight. but the usual risks come along with that.

as for shops... the only consideration is going with the one you feel most comfortable in and you feel most comfortable with their teaching staff. It's a huge thing and something that has an affect on how you enjoy diving. I still feel like a leppor when visiting a certain Adelaide Scuba... store. I know Nick wasn't too impressed with Frogdive and it does has it's nuances but it is a great environment and it's always fun to walk into a store and start coping shit before you've opened your mouth.

Sounds like you're already on a winner if you're happy so far. A slight correction on above, I had one time with Frogdive that was sulky shopkeeping. The same guy really impressed me with his attitude the first time I met him, and I've got nothing bad to say about how they run their club and school, in syders I'd recommend them, abyss and Sydney dive academy anytime.
As Dave also said, once you're into a shop they'll look after you as much as possible for pricing, they want you to keep diving after all.

TBH even the pool dive was a lot of fun. Lot of interesting stuff down there, I found some bugs, an ear plug, a contact lens, and countless bobby pins, no loose change though

No incidents when breathing from the tanks as well only difficulty I had was getting the sensation to cough when copping a mouthful of water while learning to breath from a free flowing regulator. Managed to surpress it though and pretty sure it came out as a series of burps once we were on the surface.

Cheers for the advice too. I'll talk to the guy on Monday about Advanced Adventurer and getting kitted out with some gear, and I think there's an international club night at Snorkel Safari in a week or so too which I'll try to get along to.

Pretty much booked out on my weekends for the rest of April but gonna try and squeeze a dive in on the weekend of the 20th

Also, it's entirely possible to burp underwater....farting's an odd sensation

So far I'm yet to have an underwater vom, quite happy to keep it that way too.

Yep, she's one of those people that are difficult to forget I remember one of our dive leaders calling a dive off in clovelly due to being surged over surging kelp. Almost landed on top of a PJ that night.

Just got back from our open water, I cannot begin to describe the fun I had today, saw plenty of fish, had a stripey come up and kiss my finger, saw plenty of artefacts and things down there.

Hopefully will do boat dive on Thursday if I can get the day off work. Then going to try and get in for another dive on Sunday if I can, if not will do over the coming weeks.

Just out of interest how much does the SSI Total Dive System RRP for normally?

Bought a Seasuit Wetsuit for $130 as well. (Down from $200, he just wants them out of his shop)

Edit: wetsuit was originally $400. Then reduced to $200. Then reduced to $130

huh? equipment?

costs vary significantly depending on what you want to do and what you intend to do.

as i said before, if you're likely to not travel much with diving but dive regularly or move up to instructor/DM then good quality heavy duty equipment is preferable...

if you're only going to dive on occasion and/or travel then you can deal with something lower down the scale.

if you think you might want to do tech diving then it's a completely different setup.

no matter what I would get a high quality regulator set. Oceanic EOS or delta 4.1, ScubaPro MK25 are very expensive regs, but they are expensive for a reason... breath effortlessly, fantastic construction and perform well in all situations.

So yeah I'm officially hooked.

Edit: it doesn't really matter how much, when I'm saving $200+ on a wetsuit, I'm not going to bother shopping around for the sake of saving $15 or so on the binder/folder.

You were right though

All good in the end, groveled a little bit and told my team lead he's better off approving my leave now because it's one less day I'm going to take off during our busy period

So Cook Islands this Thursday, and then again possibly on Sunday.

Part 1; oh yes, i recommend Shellharbour Scuba, gotta be on your toes with them (i felt rushed the first time with them), had no probs this time, but i was ready before everyone else this time. They had the dive suited to ability, left us be to dive within the agreed plan, was in a group that included a guy that had done this dive many times before, wouldn't have gotten lost anyhow having done the dive.
