The Forum (venue) is back
Just saw a flyer for Roots Manuva playing at "The Hi-Fi (formally The Forum). Have had some great gigs there in the past and while not perfect, is a venue that can/could be used well for gigs slightly bigger than The Metro.

Anyone with any info, who is running it now, music policy etc. If Niche are using it for Roots Manuva in March, seems things haven't changed much. Maybe just new owner.

Thoughts.......

Guess I should have checked there first.

Seeing as since they have been running venues in Brisbane and Melbourne for a while now they will have a good idea on running a venue for that size. Hoping some changes have been made to make traffic flow better inside the venue. Other than that, keeping an eye on what Niche and related touring groups put on there in 2012.

Would have been perfect for BDO & possibly Future sideshows, bit late unfortunately

Oooh I have so much love for The Forum, never managed to have a shit time there due to it being an overall excellent venue. Hopefully we'll see plenty of things there in the new year.

Apparat twisted electronica + Musica's big LED screen and flashing lights + Forum = mind smashed to a million pieces.

Orbital's head torches shinging in to the crowd + Forum = mind blown.

A lot of great times at the Forum. Would love to see it hosting gigs again.

Love this place!

I believe they closed it because Surgeon did some unrepairable damage to it (as well as many brains!) when he played there

Looking forward to seeing Mastodon there in March

YES YES YES YES.

And I do believe like Benny said, was Surgeon's fault, that fucker melted the venue to a pulp, including my mind. One of the best gigs in my life, and I was stone cold sober the whole time.

Boys noize playing for 3 hours in 2009 on Australia Day at The Forum.

Was probably one of the best DJ sets ive seen.

Also...Seeing Surgeon and Apparat there were very memorable nights.

Definitely, remember I couldn't gee up any mates and was like fuck it no way I'm missing this, went solo and was fucking amazing!

Just quietly can't wait for the new album... think it's meant to be coming out in April, listened to some previews of tracks on their youtube sounds killer - and this one

Traffic flow was horrible and those spill out areas to the left side of the stage had terrible sound. Get some reinforcement down there and it might be worth looking at more seriously, but it had a lot of problems IMO.

Never really liked the forum, although part of that might be my bias against larger venues. Compared to the metro its like a utopia lol. And surgeon was one of the best gigs ever, anywhere.

Nooooo, the balconies and ample bars are what make the place all the more enjoyable!! Hopefully means a bit of a re-jig and not less floorspace/vantage points/bars.

If they pull the balconies out that might fix the sound on the left hand side...
The forum had a third level that was never used too... Better use of that could make it a 100x better potentially

We have booked to do several shows at Hifi this year, I went and done a site inspection two weeks ago. Its going to be an awesome venue when finished. The step formation that was originally there leading down to the stage has been removed, so has the booth structure that ran along the left side. So downstairs is one big dance floor, upstairs has been revamped with a great raised seating area at the far back and a balcony around both sides up to the stage. Hifi have been very intelligent with design and the venue has great sight lines wherever you are of the stage. So all in all a great new venue much needed in sydney especially for live acts.

This is very very good news. Anything to showcase artist rather than Metro. I'd rather go to a toilet with a gay orgy than go to Metro again.

Not sure if I like the sound of this, the old venue was good as it was designed well, the stepped dance floor meant everyone could see the acts and that little side room to the left of the stage was cool to chill in. As long as you can still go to the top level, get a beer with no line and hang over the balcony with a perfect view of the floor and acts I guess it will still be good. Oh and I hope they have left the mirrored ceiling on the second level, that was awesome to stare at in certain states.
Check it ****s.

I liked the steps, oh well... mind you I really liked the place overall regardless of minor issues in layout.
Hope it becomes the go-to venue for quality electronica. I'm happy to pay an extra $5-10 in cab fares to avoid George St/Oxford St/KX

Yeah the step thing meant you could stand at the back and still see well but the comment that overall design has been well thought out and a decent amount of money chucked at it yay for having a wicked venue back!

Sad to see the stepped layout go, it was something different and like others said—gave a great view of the acts no matter ho far back you stood. Despite that I'm still keen to see what the new layout is like. As long as the mezzanine isn't butchered like what they did with Home then it should be right.

New venue is a bit meh, seemed a lot shorter from the stage to the rear, but the floor area is wider than before

Mad bottleneck when trying to leave through the narrow entrance/exit

Sound was good

Heard mostly great reports apart from a few teething problems with the entry line and a few of the sound levels for live bands. Most people really impressed with the layout (the exception being those few people who adored the old Forum - I liked it but it had some big issues).

It's a proper live band style venue apparently. Not sure how much EDM it will see.

I really liked The Forum, probably my favourite licensed venue in Sydney. Attempting to be impartial now...

The HiFi revamp is underwhelming. It's now just a big flat room with a balcony level. A large Gaelic or small Big Top.
Plywood panelling painted black is fuggen ugly, but I guess they want a banged-up "rawk n rawl" feel once it gets a bit of use and wear.

Bottlenecks are a big issue, you walk straight through the entrance on to the main floor which means when it's sold out, you're walking in to the back of the crowd which is against the back wall and blocking the entrance. Trying to get to either side bar is a shitfight. Upstairs isn't any better, the stairway down to balcony encroaches on access between the stairs and the middle of the balcony which again makes it difficult to get around.
Trying to leave, having the whole venue funnel straight through the 3m wide entrance (which was obstructed by bins, security and people waiting for mates) totally sucked. sifnt open the side doors and let everyone out freely...
No cloakroom either, which to me would usually be trivial but since Moore Park isn't the easiest place to get to, if I come straight from work or a friends place with a change of clothes I'd like to ditch my bag. Made worse by the dense crowd and squeezing through bottlenecks means carrying a bag isn't an option - that sucks.

On a plus, the sound system is great.

This seems wilfully stupid. The staggered, deep standing levels were the best feature of a lot of great features that old room had - why rebuild to make the place WORSE to see bands in, especially if you're trying to make it more rock band, less dance act?

It felt TINY! I dont like the new layout at all. It really feels like a box.
It was basically impossible to see anything if you were towards the back (and probably in the middle), or if you were in the second row around the balcony.
There is no flow (I was up the back for Mastodon and people were getting annoyed as it was hard to push past anyone) and pretty much everything that Bitsmasher said.

Sad Bring back the steps!
...what does that even mean?!

+1 re the entry lines. It was wrapped right around the corner as we tried to get in (with no shelter from the rain) so my mate and I went back to the pub for an hour.
And secruity were absolute dicks. They searched my bag (fine) but made me open up every pouch, which werent even zippered, and even my eclipse tin The fuck. It took a good 5 mins for them to go through all my stuff.
...what does that even mean?!

Was in there briefly on Saturday night for Mardi Gras... disappointing.

Bland and featureless design. The old venue's character has been removed and sterility reigns.

Wow, that's really disappointing

I was hoping the reno's would improve on the already excellent flow of the club, but it sounds like they've completely ballsed it up. That place used to be the easiest venue to get around no matter how packed it was.

My thoughts, without having been upstairs, is that it is a bit like the Gaelic Club would be if you removed a big chunk of the upstairs balcony at the Gaelic Club. It's a big black cavern of a room, now completely flat rather than being tiered, with the main bar running down the right side of the room as you face the stage and another smaller bar in the back left corner.

It could totally use some couches downstairs - there's not really anywhere to just hang out before the dancefloor gets going, as there used to be with the tables near the bars on both sides in the old configuration. With not many people there (as there weren't for Sandy Rivera on Sunday) there was zero atmosphere.

I have to say that I'm not a massive fan of the refurb, but they may because I've been to some indescribably awesome gigs there, and my first night there under the new regime was colour-by-numbers electro-house.
But we're fools if we sit back and stare at the ground
