Astral People presents KYLE HALL + RICK WADE @ Civic Underground

Astral People present a rare opportunity to witness two legends of Detroit house and techno in the intimate surroundings of The Civic Underground. Representing the genre’s genesis and its future, Rick Wade and Kyle Hall are the genuine article. Their productions and DJing taps into an essence of deepness often imitated but never mastered.

Rick Wade was infected at a young age by the vibing soul of Al Green and Isaac Hayes that was colouring Chicago’s radio waves. The influence never quite left him; an organic, funky energy pervades his classic deep house stylings since the early 90’s. With releases on seminal labels such as Mood’s and Grooves, Track Mode and Yore and a DJ set famous for its diversity and energy Rick Wade is a rare treat for Sydney-siders.

Kyle Hall is prodigy grown out of the foundations laid by the likes of Rick Wade. After dancing for hours at age 16 at an Omar-S show the legend took him under his wing. Ever since, Hall has crafted productions that tap in to the rich vein of American musical history, drawing on a wide array of musical traditions that weave him in to a larger narrative. His freakish talents have been released on influential imprints such as Hyperdub and Planet E.

Outstanding in their own right individually, this double bill is an unprecedented opportunity to get outrageously deep.

Astral People presents...
KYLE HALL (Wild Oats/Hyperdub - Detroit)
RICK WADE (Harmonie Park - Detroit)
w/ Simon Caldwell, Future Classic DJs
Preacha + Astral Djs
Sunday September 30th
The Civic Underground
Doors 10pm

What time are Kyle and Rick likely to play?

Really? I thought it was probably the worst DJ set I've ever heard. What was he playing for the final hour anyway?

Rick Wade played some nice records; was great to hear Deep Burnt.

Guess the defining thing for me isn't about hearing nice records that I know then.

I though both Rick and Kyle absolutely slayed it.

Both had the crowd going nuts, the vibe was great.

And I admit, Kyle's set was a little of a slow start for the first 15 or so minutes but then when he went in to an hour of heavy acid techno out of nowhere it was amazing. Yeah a couple of tracks were mixed a lil sloppy but personally I like hearing the rough edges of a very 'live' dj set.

Rick Wades set was good .. Kyle Halls set was good

Personally i preferred Rick Wades - it was like Kyle Hall was trying to 'melt' brians in his DJ set...didnt really care about programming or anything - Just played what he wanted which was kinda cool but im kinda over this style of DJing tbh

Warmups were good overall - Preachas was good, Astral DJs was good, Simon was abit meh

7.9 lightning bolts /10

What ? Over it ?
Not enough DJs play for themselves these days.
Too much crowd pleasers Zzz

Target the niche

DJs need to find a balance between what the crowd wants and what they want - great DJs have an almost 50/50 balance....and 'what the crowd wants' doesn't mean crowd pleaser tracks either...

Loved Kyle Hall's first few records; really appreciated the change-up from Rick Wade and what had come before. Good night!

I'm all for hearing tunes I don't know, as long as they're good- Wade played plenty of those. The last hour of Hall's set was complete rubbish. Each to their own.
