What will you use them for? Bedroom DJing? House parties? Mobile DJing?

What's your budget?

DB make some awesome lower range powered speakers that you wont regret for parties.

Behringers stuff in powered speakers is a bit poo in my opinion

Truths are ok for an entry level monitor

mainly house parties. ive got 2 sony sound system speakers that we have been using at parties, a long with my cousins powered speaker, but found on aus day they just didnt cut it.

and my cousins speaker his dad got him for christmas and was like 800 and i really didnt want to spend that much. was thinking max 500..

It will be for speakers so then i can use the sony ones as monitors.

maybe a bit over your budget, but the JBL EON15P-1 is worth a look :

Behringer Truths might be a good option. Technically they're studio monitors, but only entry level ones and most suited to home DJing imo. They've got a bit of grunt and handle house parties easily.

Good price here: http://www.djwarehouse.com.au/cat/in...duct_id=206918

$500 for the pair.... forget it. $250 will either get you nothing or get you shit sounding very heavy poor quality speakers.

JBL would be the least expensive option which is viable.

i got a speaker/amp set up last year for my birthday ( i paid for it *hee hee* )

it was about $700 and has ample kick for house parties and home use
the reason i bought it was because my ye olde stereo speakers just weren't up to the job
so now these push out a nice bass response and can fill a room with sound

i got them from light sounds btw
but your'e in luck right now - so many stores are doing sales on gear so if you check around i'm sure you'll pick up something to your needs at a reasonable price

don't waste your time with passives, they're a pain in the ass.

you wAnt 1 speaker hey....

personally I'd add a sub to the shitbox setup you've already got at wait for it to keel over and die then spend more money on 2 decent 10-12" units.

or just do the smart thing and hire speakers with the person who is putting on these house parties. usually mates are happy to go halves for a simple setup like 2x15" JBL EON's which set you back $80 in hire.

that's 12 house parties, and I'm fairly certain if you spend $500 on a speaker it will not last that long if you're pushing it for 6-8 hours each time.

Stupid question, what exactly is the difference between powered, passive and monitors?

Passive speakers require an external amp (for example, your home hifi speakers are passive).

Active (aka powered) speakers have an amp built in, so you can plug your audio source (eg. mixer) straight into them.

"Monitor" can be a deceiving term. "Studio monitors" are speakers designed for audio production. They are built to have as flat a response as possible, to reproduce sound accurately at any volume. Studio monitors can be active or passive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_monitor

"DJ monitors" aren't necessarily a different type of speaker. They can be any old thing. They're referred to as monitors because of the way they're being used (that is, as a way for a DJ to monitor the sound outside the headphones for mixing). This is also known as foldback.

If you're up for spending $450, I can't recommend these highly enough:

http://www.djwarehouse.com.au/cat/in...duct_id=206918

Just to add confusion, these are cheap studio monitors which I and many others use as DJ monitors at home, simply because they sound great. They're active (powered), and pack enough punch for a small party.

There are lower budget options of course. Have a dig around that website, and others like storedj.com.au.

Got a question so I thought I'd bump this instead of starting a new thread.

I'm planning on picking up some monitors to double up as speakers for parties, and a lot of people say 8" truths are plenty for this etc. I mix in my bedroom which is only about 4x4m, so I'm wondering if 8" truths will be too big for such a small room? would 5"or 6" be more suited to it, but then would I be able to double their use by taking them outside for small parties? (eg. 6" truths, HS50s, any smaller monitor). I'd be primarily using them in my room as apposed to taking them outside.

I know it can be an ask wanting them for both monitors and speakers.. but i'd appreciate your thoughts

thanks for the imput guys, but instead of the quality of the monitors i was more asking whether 8" monitors would be too much for a small room (4x4m). as apposed to getting smaller ones where i still want to be able to lug them outside to play for maybe small parties.

kurupted you can sell them to me and upgrade

I have a small bedreoom studio, and use 8 inch monitors. I have a set of Fostex PM2 and theyt sound just asd good at low volumes as they do high volumes. I have not found them to be too big for the room at all. You'll have a problem with an 8 inch cone if they have be cranked too sound decent.

I would also look at Quests line of Powered Speakers, something like a QSE350 or QSE400. Should be enough to pump a few parties
