Cities: Skylines - Euro City Simulator
Cities: Skylines

Time for a thread as it comes out on Tuesday 10 March. Early response seems to be that it's pretty damn good; the SimCity that should have been, instead of that 2013 debacle.

Marketing Spiel

Cities: Skylines is a modern take on the classic city simulation. The game introduces new game play elements to realize the thrill and hardships of creating and maintaining a real city whilst expanding on some well-established tropes of the city building experience. From the makers of the Cities in Motion franchise, the game boasts a fully realized transport system. It also includes the ability to mod the game to suit your play style as a fine counter balance to the layered and challenging simulation. You’re only limited by your imagination, so take control and reach for the sky!

Main features:
  • Multi-tiered and challenging simulation: Constructing your city from the ground up is easy to learn, but hard to master. Playing as the mayor of your city you’ll be faced with balancing essential requirements such as education, water, electricity, police, fire fighting, healthcare and much more along with your citys real economy system. Citizens within your city react fluidly, with gravitas and with an air of authenticity to a multitude of game play scenarios.
  • Extensive local traffic simulation: Colossal Orders extensive experience developing the Cities in Motion series is fully utilized in fully fleshed out and well-crafted transport systems.
  • Districts and Policies: Be more than just an administrator from city hall. Designating parts of your city as a district results in the application of policies which results in you rising to the status of Mayor for your own city.
  • Extensive modding support: Build or improve on existing maps and structures. You can then import them into the game, share them as well as download the creations of other city builders on the Steam workshop.

Question. Would I be able to make this work on a new xps withon board Intel HD Graphics 5500 and an i7 5th generation processor? Specs all call for separate graphics card.

P.s. CEO is kinda cute.

Doesn't necessarily mean it won't run though. Maybe someone will give it a crack.

I've been watching a lot of Lets Plays and this looks the goods. It's basically everything we wanted Sim City to be and more. Also the team of 11 people is super receptive, listening to the community and already have some major updates like tunnels planned as free DLC.

Saw that people that all ready own the previous games in the series complaining not much is changed/improved and better off playing the older versions with mods?

I don't own any of their previous stuff so I'm happy to jump in at this point. I'm going to give a few weeks though, as I keep getting burned on pre-orders.

No its what I herd about the new one. It was the one thing I have been wary of due to them pulling that stunt twice all ready. If I herd bad information bout this one I will be super happy but ima sit and wait.

Unless you took a last stand at the OK corral against these people, heard.

General question with Intel integrated graphics... If I do pull the trigger on the XPS will I be able to play any games? I wouldn't mind getting a few Sims like this. I.e. Things that simply don't exist on PS4.

I do get that. What I guess I'm trying to ask is, will this be a potential problem for every game I wish to partake in?

YouTube seach this: "intel hd 5500 bruce computing"

That guy did a whole bunch of 5500 benchmarks on what I think is an i5. Note they are all low res and low graphics detail settings as far I could see. But you can see that running games doesn't seem to be much of a problem.

Personally I would not go anywhere near integrated graphics. It will be a constant source of disappointment.

Ta. Yeah, its a trade off I guess. Although there is a nice looking Lenovo for the same price as the xps.

good review, game looks almost as broken as sim city was though. traffic is essentially the heart of both games.

is the traffic issue fixable?

I do wonder whether any of these games use the actual industry simulation tools available for city planning and transport.

Supersampling (and downsampling) mod. Amazing, if your GPU can handle it.

Here's the result of my exploits today. Pretty happy with it. Just shy of 20k population with a mixture of oil, farming and generic industry. Good coverage of all services, excellent health and generally good traffic. There's a few traffic hotspots I need to fix up and I need to expand on the buses and metro (which you can't see).

You can open the image links in another tab to get a bigger picture.

I've got a few different suburbs here, including the newly settled downtown business and high density area. I've also moved the sewage treatment to the far east island and am in the process of cleaning up Brookvale. Basically removing the dumps, relocating the coal power plants and getting the pollution back down.
Sheffield Square is just the roundabout where I've banned heavy traffic, forcing trucks to head east and onto the motorway. Made a huuuuuge difference once I did that.

This is the view from the Entertainment Quarter. It currently has an Opera House and the Entertainment Expo thingy.

This is my original settlement, come a long way since then. The university is also here, linked by buses and subway.

This game. So addictive. Here's my town so far. At around 35k.

I don't know what's more amazing: that I can build these, or that the vehicles actually use them...

I've encountered the issue with service vehicles getting stuck in traffic. In my city I only have a problem with that at three or so intersections, the worst of which is pictured. Seriously, it's not a big deal.

The data layers could be improved. There is no single screen that shows hard numbers on employment/demand by industry by education level, which is a bit annoying when industry and offices are lumped into the same RCI bar; you don't know what is actually in demand. You can work around this by using districts: clicking on a district shows the employment/vacancies in that district. So if you only have certain types of jobs in a district, you can determine what is needed from that. But it'd be much nicer to have good old wall of numbers.

Really enjoying this game so far but i think its a bit too easy if you know the formula for whats necessary.

i've got absolutely no issues in my city and a population of like 80K.

i'll snap some screenshots tonight. dont have anything too interesting in terms of layout but my city is efficient as fuck.

The game comes with a "hard" mode mod that tweaks costs and demand values if you want a bit more challenge.

eh, no point really. there's too many broken things in the game at this point.

once some mods or patching comes out for traffic and the flow on problem of corpses and garbage trucks are fixed then i'll prob start again on a nice new city on hard mode.

Currently to fix these issues you need 6 lane roads everywhere, trains and subways everywhere and bloody crematoriums everywhere

as i've said. just going for big and efficient, getting used to game mechanics, seeing what does and doesnt work.

once modded or patched. I'll hit up something nice and new.

also, wtf is too much green?
