7800N Is Dropping Packets
Hey guys,
My BILLION 7800N is dropping wireless packets.

It happens randomly, usually at night but that is when I am at home to use it. Tested and it happens across all of my devices (PC, HP Laptop and Macbook Air). The wireless will be fine most of the time, and then I'll get random patches of packet lose (confirmed with ping) which is really annoying when I'm trying to Skype/play games

I've done the usual change everything I can think of and see if it works routine which was only set it to use n mode only, tried reducing channel width to 20mhz now will see if that does anything. It's not sharing a channel with my neighbours (they are on 11 I'm on 1)

I think it's a hardware issue but anything else I could try before I have to try and find the receipt and get this bitch replaced?

Are you running the latest firmware?
If not, the latest version can be downloaded from their website. It is recommended that when you do the update you choose to reset all settings, and then re-enter them after the update (beforehand I take a screenshot of each options page to make it easier).

I use to have an unrelated wireless problem on my 7800N - just switching the channel each time would fix it. It was unrelated to your issue but it's worth a try anyway. Try Channel 6 if it's not busy.

def try the latest firmware

I had my own issues packet loss and occasional unexplained wireless fallovers with the 7800n, it wasn't very strong through walls/floors either. Great modem, but pretty average wireless side of things.

I'm a converted believer in keeping modem and router as separate hardware these days.

Ah. And here I was thinking my internet provider was slow and laggy. Mostly use wireless but it's so patchy. Also have the 7800n.

Actually its right next door, in the next room but my laptop doesn't seem to always pick it up in a steady stream. Always have to refresh the connection.

Is it a bad thing if it was?

I'd expect you'd get pretty kickass customer service from them.

I found that changing the wireless frequency on my 7800N helped when it was having random periods of packet loss.

Hey Seanous, did the firmware update fix the issue for you?
it didn't for me. my wireless is still dropping when i'm just in the next room.

have you played with the packet filter? i had a look at mine this morning and the default rule forwards everything which is outgoing. though noticed that the default filter rule did not specify which IPv. 4 or 6. not sure if this may be an issue. not sure if this would affect the rule in any way. i'd assume that having neither IPv4 or 6 specified, it would allow both versions by default.

anyone have further suggestions?

fuzzy: packet filter is a firewall. Nothing to do with wireless.

Firmware helped make my network more stable, no more dropped packets YEY

Also make sure you have turned on 20/40 that help reduce latency by letting it go full Wireless-N. Unless you've got a shit load of wireless networks leave the channel set to auto. I checked with SSIDer and my router found the only available space for it do 20/40 Wirless-N.

Try a factory reset if you've been fiddling with the settings and don't forget to commit your settings by hitting save. Few times a reboot has fucked my settings because I didn't commit my changes

Probably an obvious one, but have you tried changing the wireless channel fuzz? Forget if the 7800n has the ability to scan for used channels,

but with the 7800dx I have at work here you can go to:

configuration > wireless > advanced, then click the scan used channels button.

If most of the channels are being used and you're in a congested wifi ap area it may be worth investing in a dual band router + dual band cards.
Let Life Support and Dr Rudi do it right for you.

Yeah Wifi Analyzer is usually the first port of call these days just check check if there's any clashes.
