GUY J

Israeli producer Guy J has established himself as one of the most sophisticated and emotive producers in electronic music of the last decade, with a body of work and a sphere of influence that belies relatively short time in the spotlight. Whether it be his sensual, hypnotic take on house music, his deeply textured techno or his wondrous ambient material, his work is always touched with a magic and emotion that few rival.

After bursting on the scene with his debut album 'Esperanza' on seminal label, Bedrock, he followed it up with the spectacular 1000 Words in 2011. He then went to prove his remarkable ability to craft a journey with his 'Balance presents' release in 2013 and last year released another double album of sublime melodies with his 'The Trees, the Sea & the Sun' again on Bedrock.

Not satisfied with dominance in the production and DJ world he has also launched his very own label, Lost & Found in 2012 hosting some of the most exciting and respected names in the scene including Funk D'Void, Hernan Cattaneo, Secret Cinema, Guy Mantzur, Jamie Stevens, Sahar Z & Eelke Kleijn.

Coming from intetstate for this. By the sounds of the write up Guy is going to have the opportunity to do his thing with a long set. He is such a little master that by just thinking how good he's going to be makes me wish it was this weekend. Massive line up overall, good chance of coming early in the day

He is not the new anyone. He is himself, Guy J, and he has been NOW since the first time I heard one of his productions on one of Hernan's mixes. Confirmed the first time he came here and we heard him play @ Brown Alley.

No 1 producer in the world of the music I love !!

Unfortunately I won't be able to see him here but look forward to seeing him in the UK.

**ANOUNCEMENT**

DARKBEAT 13TH BIRTHDAY

featuring

GUY J (ISRAEL)
THOMAS SCHMACHER (GER)
SEBASTIEN LEGER (FRA)
ANTHONY PAPPA (AUS)
+ MORE TBA

Including a HUGE local line-up!

SUNDAY 13TH MARCH [LABOUR DAY EVE]
@ RAILWAY HOTEL [BRUNSWICK]

The idea for Darkbeat was clear from the very start: underground events, featuring world class DJ’s at Melbourne’s premier venues.

13 years ago we took the first step in turning this idea into what has become a far-reaching and memorable tale; one that continues to share vibrant dance-floor moments and long-lasting memories with the countless partygoers. Many moons later, we celebrate our 13th*birthday with this same idea in mind, assembling a line-up that pays homage to the calibre of international acts we’ve been accustomed to, at a venue renowned for it’s non-stop party action across 4 diverse, action packed rooms – the Railway Hotel Brunswick!

The mayhem begins early in the infamous 'Open-Air Courtyard' and continues right through to the wee hours of the morning; a marathon dance-floor session in true Darkbeat birthday fashion.
Fasten your seatbelt, put it into drive and head straight through those front doors once again to help celebrate our 13th*Birthday with very special guests:

GUY J (ISR}
THOMAS SCHUMACHER (GER)
SÉBASTIEN LÉGER*(FRA)
ANTHONY PAPPA (AUS)
+ MORE TBA

Including a HUGE local line-up*this*Sunday March 13!

--------------------------------------------------------

GUY J (ISRAEL}

--------------------------------------------------------

THOMAS SCHUMACHER (GER)

Thomas Schumacher is a DJ/producer based in Berlin. After breaking through with the success of "When I Rock" in 1997 on legendary Mancunian Techno label Bush, he went on to release three albums and dozens of high-profile remixes. He has also written the soundtrack for a staging of „Hamlet“ at the Schauspielhaus in the former German capital of Bonn. Four of his single releases have entered the German Top 100 with „Schall“ being his biggest commercial hit, making it into the top 20 in 2001. Before embarking on his solo career, Thomas Schumacher was a key figure in establishing the rave scene in his native city of Bremen in the early 90s. He founded his first label, SpielZeug Schallplatten in 1998, which went on to release music from acts like Umek, Adam Beyer, Stephan Bodzin, and Deetron to name but a few.

He has also released material as „Elektrochemie“ (together with singer Caitlin Devlin and Stephan Bodzin) on Get Physical Music. Thomas Schumacher hosts a monthly radio show „My Electric Ballroom“ which is named after his new label „Electric Ballroom“. Once again Thomas takes a unique approach when programming his 60 minute episodes, taking on the role of storyteller and enriching the music with his personal views and first hand knowledge.

--------------------------------------------------------

SÉBASTIEN LÉGER (FRA)

Sébastien Léger has been one of the most unique and captivating producers the techno scene has brought forward over the past decade. His steadily rising career is proof of where hard graft, dedication, passion, consistency and originality can take a producer to. His prolific work rate belies the thought and effort that he pours into each production, setting him out as the antithesis to lazy contemporaries who churn out unimaginative production line formulas.

Having achieved so much across his career - hundreds of productions, remixes for everyone from Justin Timberlake to Kylie Minogue, DJing at the world’ s biggest festivals and clubs - you’ d be forgiven for thinking he may be one to simply rest on his laurels. He’ s still got some big goals in his sights, however.” There’s a few people I would like to remix that would be a personal satisfaction for me. People like Laurent Garnier, or Daft Punk - that would be an achievement for me, not just because I like their music but also because of what they represent for French music. And I’m always looking for the next thing for my career. It would of course be good to be bigger without compromising my sound. The more people I touch, the better, but without being completely cheesy.”

That’s something you can always count on him for; staying true to his sound and principles. And in this day and age of hip-hop artists going trance and house artists going country, that’ s something which should be highly revered.

--------------------------------------------------------

ANTHONY PAPPA (AUS)

Described as “The DJs, DJ” Anthony Pappa truly is a master of his craft and one of the most respected and revered DJs on the international circuit. The combination of his genuine love for his art, his down to earth, lovable personality and his constant desire to push the musical boundaries at performances all around the world has made Anthony one of the most sought after DJs on the planet.

An Australian of Italian descent based in the UK, Anthony Pappa is a true internationalist, with a self-imposed mission to share his music with people all around the world. And since gracing the cover of DJ Magazine in 2000 as part of the celebrated “Nu-Breed”, Anthony Pappa has taken his rightful place at the top table of DJ royalty.

Edu Imbernon would be a lovely addition. Obviously we are now quite spoiled for choice (props to Darkbeat for this amazing upgrade to the lineup), but I feel Edu would fit in quite well with the festivities.

Fuck me, getting SO excited for Sunday!

Wow, what a birthday bender that was!
So much quality tunage, Schumacher and Leger were excellent. GuyJ was phenomenal, his last 2 hours were superb.
And an all star cast of locals ensured there was quality music everywhere.
My only criticism was how hot that club room got during GuyJ , absolutely ridiculous, felt like a London hardhouse club from 15 years ago lol.
Great gig DB, you've outdone yourselves. Again

Ame definitely the highlight for me. Lister Cooray's short set too was great to dance to. Really liked the first hour of Schumacher's set, was good that he mixed it up for the second half and went into house but the tracks were a bit hit and miss. The sound quality was a huge step up for Railway. Great to see them investing back into the place (while still serving $9 jugs!). Agree about the heat, the issue is when they have to close the courtyard there's no room to dance as the main room gets too packed. Reckon for big events like this they could invest in turning the front room into more of a club. But overall, great day/night and fantastic to see Melbourne's dance scene thriving!

Had an excellent day/night overall. Well worth the trip down from Sydney. Ame was ok to start the day. Spent the next few hours in the pizza room. All the DJs in there were great Daveys set was heaps of fun.
Got a spot in the main club for pretty much the rest of the night. Thad Lesters set was awesome - man he played some great tunes.
Guy J just did what he always does - played a magical set of awesome music. So much drive and all those amazing melodies, the last 3 hours in particular were just incredible.
A few things weren't perfect about the event but who cares when you get to hear amazing music like that for 5 hours?!

Similar thoughts as those in here.

Ame played a decent set to start the day. Pretty vocalish and Innervisions-esque as expected.
Caught the end of Davey J who played some great tunes. Enjoyed parts of Pappa - pretty old school feeling and vibe to his set which was cool.
Thad Lester played a killer set. He dropped Cid Inc's new remix second track in, so awesome to hear that out. It would never get dropped in Sydney.
Guy J is so good every time it's difficult to put into words. Best progressive DJ in the world without a doubt. Can't think of any others in the game who does what he does behind the controls, or the sounds, basslines and vibe that he's able to craft. So consistent every time.
It was pretty packed and some people need to be a bit more self aware but I didn't let it get to me, managed to get a decent spot on the dancefloor for Guy and didn't leave

Quote:

I don't go to be in the VIP area.. I don't need big breaks, a big song with a buildup and lights and smoke.. all you need is a kickdrum and a good bassline. You don't need any of that other shit. Na, I'm not going for none of those reasons.. I'm just going for the music.

This is a bit of a cut n' paste of what I said to friends over email:

That has to be one of the best parties I've been to in a long time! We rocked up just in time to catch the start of Ame's live set and man was it good! Such a great way to kick off the day, and this time they nailed the sound in the courtyard.
After that we hit up some food in the pizza bar, that was a lot of fun listening to some top party tunes while chowing down on an amazing 300g rib eye steak cooked to perfection.
After that we sorta floated around as Sebastien Leger wasn't really doing it for me, but Schumacher? Goddamn that was a killer set. So much energy and enthusiasm with some epic tracks dropped. The crowd was loving it! we had a great vantage spot upstairs for most of his set. Bumped in to a bunch of really friendly peeps during his set too.
A.Pappa was a lot of fun when we popped in for a bit. Guy J tho, when he first started the room was rammed and super hot, it was pretty intense so we enjoyed his tunes outside while we waited for it to thin out a bit. So many huge tunes dropped, so good. The whole event had a bit of a festival vibe that I was loving. More of that please!
