I would say at least 95% of people mix "someone elses tune" in their demos/live mixes

I'm not sure that I understand what it is that you're asking!

With regards to 'mixes', do you mean 'remixes' of existing tracks, or are you talking about mixing segments of other people's mixes to create a new demo mix (inclusive of the mixes/transitions between tracks that have been performed by others in their own mixes)? Everybody does the former, however I sincerely doubt people would do the latter. It would hardly be your own mix!

<runs off to mix sections of various renaissance and northern exposure CDs to make a super pete_mac prog mix in sasha/digweed stylez whist claiming it as my own>

To be honest your question is not very clear...well to me anyway...

Do you mean how many people use others people's mixes and put them on a demo CD claiming it's their mix?
or
Do you mean how many people copy someone exact play list and mix them thenself and put it on a demo CD?

For the answer of the first questions, I do not think you will get any answer...and no real DJ would do this only wanna bees that couldn't stand up for the real thing anyway...so what's the point?

Second question, if you wanna copy the exact same order of someone's else playlist, that's your problem, but I don't think anybody own a playlist order...actually it might be a good exercise to compare, but as far as putting it on a demo CD, means you lack originality...and in this business i don't think it is a good thing.

I think he means DJ D1's second question.

It helps understand how the DJ has melded the two tracks together. nothing wrong with it if using for education purposes but to do it live in front of an audience would be fair lame (bang gang copied 3 tracks in progression which switch played at greenwood weeks before, conincidence?)

Pretty sure he means mixes another persons tracklist.

I mean yeah you could do that but I think that half the fun of a set is putting together the mix. If you're using someone elses tracklisting it kinda takes that artistic portion out of it. Makes it almost purely technical and a less fun if you ask me.

Each to their own though.

i put a call out a couple years ago for djs to fill a residency/night i was booking and got a mix from a potential that i thought sounded pretty familiar

i don't know if they'd just copied the mix or given me a copy of the original but fuck me if it wasn't hawtin's de9 mix

actually - it can't have been the original because it was pretty bad

If i hear something that sounds really good from an international, i may play it at a party or whatever.

But, i wouldn't mix in a prerecorded set, no

If two track work together and add to the way a set i am building sounds then why not?

Yeah either way that is fucking stupid! FAIL!

Brings me to a funny story though, I had a mate that handed a CD he was quite chuffed with around. Apprently a popular DJ (with no tallent mind you) from our area got a hold of it. He made a demo, and did exactly what this guy is suggesting, he took parts of my mates demos and used them in his demo. My mate got a copy of the tallentless DJ's demo, and gave one to my mate. He had a listen and realised it was his mix, with one or two extra tracks. My mate challenges him and the DJ denies, then he says, OK listen, I fuck up a little between track X and tack Y, shows it to him and sure enough, this demo has the same fuck up! Fucking tool bag.
I'll be back...

And yet you are not clear...using a song someone else played is okay, it is done all the time, after all no songs is exclusive to a person, unless they produced it and wanted it to be this way...using the entire 40 minutes mix, and claim you mixed it, it is not okay and downright stupid...only people that are jerk would do that...it means they cannot do it themselves so therefor they are no real DJ...but wannabees...

So now why would you ask such questions???

He means putting disk 1 and disk 2 of MOS Anual in either CDJ and mixing disk 1's track X with disk 2's track Y.

No I have never done it and I think it's stupid. Just go and buy the full length track and be done with it, that way you have an intro and outro. Not to mention quality issues.

I've done that at a party once! ONCE only though. Someone requested, I said I didn't have, they handed me MOS and said "now you have it". I only mixed the part where no transition was happening though.
I could be wrong, but I believe diversity is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.

It's not common practise for you though surely?

I had a mate who did this. He played every 2 weekends with a wallet full of mixed compliation CD's!

Drives me insane when i buy a mix cd and there's a track on it that i love and just can't find anywhere or isn't due to be released for a long time or forever for that matter......
So frustrating, that's why the mix cds that come with the bonus unmixed disc are great.

I use remixes of other DJ's simply because I'm an R&B DJ and I only have about 30 or so of my own remixes so using other DJ's is essential. However I never use segments/parts of other DJ's actual long demos or megamixes. And as for using tracks off compliation CD's such as MOS... they are only for the odd 17 y.o party gig you get where the audience can't tell shit!

Ah...I'm sort of with ya now...

I would suggest setting up a pay-pal account and a beatport.com account and start buying and downloading single tracks once you've identifyed them....you can mix comps if you really want too...but it's not a good way to learn my friend...best sticking to singles and EPs...

Exactly what I was thinking. If you don't know how to ID the track, look at what track it is in the CD player, then look at the back cover of the CD case and it will tell you what the track is. Or did you torrent the mix? If so, I'll second that

Someone quoted the other day in regards to illegally downloading music that DJ's should lead by example and I agree with that wholehartedly. Even if its just practicing.... If you make it one day as a producer / DJ and everyone at home "practicing" is illegally downloading your tunes, you're not going to be able to make a living out of what you love. And the day musicians need to get second jobs to do what they love will be a sad, sad day in the world. I don't care how many people are doing it or how easy it is
