Starting Equipment
OK Well ive been a long time avid listener toa ll that is house, dance, electro and all the other shit we pump out of computers everyday. I've always been know to all my mates as the guy whos got the freshest, barely mainstream tunes, and have always wanted to share this. And it was one hungover day after a night of clubbing last year that i decided DJ'ing would be something id love to do, not for fame or money or anything of that shit, purely for the sake of sharing all my beats. So over the last couple of months ive been dusting off the old high school contact book and seeing if there were any venues available for me once id gotten my skills up. After this i spent a couple more weeks doing digital mixes on my computer with shitty DJ'ing software and giving them to mates, they seemed to like them but i guess they couldnt pick a shitty beatmix if it bounced right in front of them.
Point to this thread is that ive decided i wanna make the investment into a half decent setup so i can start some work in the near future. One of the setups ive been offered is technics 1200s with a serato mixer, the value is decent but i wasnt sure if it was a better option to go with a set of CDJS and scrap all the vinys. If so what would be an appropriate setup within a reasonable budget.

Cheers

BTW, serato don't make mixers, is it a Rane?

(Not meaning to sound like an ass or anything, that's just the advice I give. It's hard to say that in a nice tone in writing )

shit thanks for the replies, my budget would be around 3 - 4 grand tops, and yeh the mixer is a rane sorry but the serato feature is what was most important. If i were to be mixing with Mp3s would the Cdj or the serato be better, or is there really not a big difference?

no difference.

the rane 57 is not the best idea though.

I'll leave you to look at the equipment and logically think it through (hint: think gigging) and come back with the answer.

do that and you'll be crowned best n00b of the month.

2 x 1200 second hand set you back around 1k
1 x 92 hard to find second hand so new 2.25k
1 x serato box 0.75k

That's your 4k
0.26k gets you a pair of hd25

Then you won't have to upgrade for very long. Hope you have a laptop though that is compatible for Serato...

4k will get you a fairly decent new setup mate....I would head into your local 'Central Station' or 'light and sound' retail outlet and buy concider buying new.

Google them on the net...If your not sure about what to buy...then hire the equipment first...

headwear is also a very important factor to consider

these are the best if you're mixing electro haus

hat's like these ... whilst stylish are impractical to mix with due to headphone issues

You've got to be joking.....

What would a noob want with a Xone 92!!!!?

A DJM300 / DXM 06 or similar mixer is appropriate. Most clubs don't even have 92!

Exaclty what I was thinking. Save some cash, buy a basic 2 channel mixer. Spend the rest of the 4 grand on wax. You could get a decent second hand setup (1200's and a 2 channel mixer 2nd hand) for between 1000 and 1500. Then just blow the rest on tunage.

Thats right.... even a good CDJ set up shouldn't be more than 2 grand / 2.5 for new.

Infact you could a club style setup like this for 4k:
2* 800's (new) =$2100
2*1200's (2nd hand) = $1000
DJM600 (2nd hand) = $800

All that equals $3900.

Xone 92 for begginer = ultimate fail.

Cheap (not too cheap) CDJ's and a cheap mixer or 1200's and 2 channel is where everyone should start. Then upgrade after you know that its not just a fad and your going to stick with it.

you should get CDJ 800 and get a 4 channels mixer like DJM 600

if you have $4k i would suggest you buy a CD turntable and pay the download music.

so once u start u have many songs for you to practice mixing!

Cheers and enjoy playing your gears

Soz had a bit of a bender so couldnt find my way to a computer over the weekend, im liking the idea of both CDJ's and a set of 1200s, ive already got the vinyl tables off a mate, just needa do a bit more research into mixers n all that jazz so i appreciate all the feedback, and shoes wise i got some pretty sweet kicks already sitting in the shoebox waiting for the day i can actually be cool enough to wear them. Cheers for all the advice, will be checking in soon when i will no doubt have more questions.

don't waste your money on a DJM 600.

get an xone 62 if you're actually getting CDJ's and decks. get a ecler nuo 2 or 3 if you're running 2 decks or a nuo 4 if you're running anything midi interfaced.

the 600 is outdated shit that never sounded good to begin with. there are so many better options than pioneer.
