Why is Kangaroos coach a dog of a job? It should be regarded as the top position in Australian coaching.

Cleary would make a fantastic Australian coach. From all accounts he's brilliant with the players.

firstly no-one really wants to release players from their clubs, secondly how well does it pay?

if you compare it to Union, playing for your country is still everything. 'Roos are just a bit of fun on the side. Also I think as a club coach you're given almost 12 months to work with players, combinations, strategise. with the national team they don't get much time to train together and get the combinations right.

Being national coach would obviously have it's significant benefits, I'm merely saying that while the ARL precludes club coaches from involvement it is not as attractive as it could be.

I think for league, club coaches should be allowed to apply and selection should be via panel with the coach having a say.

Heard a salacious little rumour that ESPN are going to put in a massive offer for Channel Nine's scraps in the TV deal.

Not sure how that would work given that it'll still have to be shown on Foxtel.

Has anyone ever watched NRL overseas? I assume espn show the GF and Origin already?

Yep, living in London for the past year and I just VPN via the Netherlands to this legitimate site:
http://livestream.com/nrl

To be honest, if I was living in Aus I'd probably still be doing the same. The games are on immediately, the resolution is better than standard definition and you don't get any ad breaks.

Who has an SDTV these days?

While in BKK I had the Australia channel. Mainly showed AFL but there was some league.

^^ No one. But the broadcasts are still SD, unless they've finally upgraded the past year?

Nope, because Nine only broadcast the games on the SD channels because supposedly they get the maximum number of viewers that way.

I was doing that for a while but it's a pain in the ass. You have to set up your computer to run through your tv, which means mouse control rather than remote control. Then you have to have an ad blocker, and hope that HOLA doesn't go down. You also have to close that little box that pops up telling you to subscribe every 10 minutes. Then there's no pre game, half time or post game analysis.

Fair enough, but they're probably more prevalent these days due to Netflix et al. (and perhaps moreso with piratez given that Netflix et. al. can run on "dumb" devices like Apple TV).

Ad blockers take no effort to maintain once installed. PS. stop using Hola: http://adios-hola.org/

I'm happy to leave that box up, though I can understand how it would annoy some people. It does cover up the little stats that pop up like penalty counts etc.

I'm not too phased about this, you do get some interviews but these analyses can be found elsewhere if required.

So there's no actual network that shows games internationally, it's all just streamed on vpn?

Maybe that's why ESPN are interested. For all the millions of league fans in the US and across Asia

Not specifically directed at you: but not everyone can afford to luxuriate in new tv's all the time. I think a lot of people forget that. A lot of comfortably middle class people walk around in a daze that is unaffected by a lot of people who are perpetually close to the edge. Close enough that they know it wouldn't take much to fall off.

HD is great. Especially for sport. People do become complacent about permanent technological ascendence though. Micro gradations of imperfectability that a lot of people just absorb and adjust to financially and socially but lots of people get dropped along the way. No one notices.

Technological advances are now just basically about human consumption choices for the most part. The developed - and the developing - world is aspiring to consume these fine, translucent lines of improvement of techno-stuff.

This isn't just bromidic nostalgia but no one can tell me that I enjoy something like English Football more now when I can watch it in HD tv, than I did 25 years ago, when I used to stay up late and listen to it on the radio.

It's exasperating is all I'm saying. Exasperating and exhausting.

Holy fucking shit. Such drivel. Ha ha.

^you dnt need an HD TVs to watch HD channels though, just a set top box that will receive them. They'll just play in SD on non-HD tvs. The only people who won't get them will be people with old SD STBs but an HD capable STB is cheap.

Dude, Dick Smith have their own branded tvs, you can buy a 40" good quality OLED TV for $450 now ($1500 for 65"). No excuses for people to not have a big TV these days. Stop smoking and pissing up for a month and buy a nice one.

^$450 is a fair whack for a pensioner or beneficiary. My mum still has s CRT tv (no HD where she lives anyway as the town she lives in only gets satellite reception which is SD only)

Of course these days you are getting to the point where there are plenty of second hand HD TVs on the market as people upgrade, my current telly (42" 720p plasma) was $50 off a mate

Yeah, my inner anti-consumption socialist tends to come to the surface when I get on it like "my name is Otto and I like to get blotto."

Still, the larger point about consumption had some validity. Zubrowka vodka can seriously upend one ay.

Wasn't really a sports thread rant either. Should learn to leave that shit for the political threads innit. Ha ha.

that's an interesting one. would it be like champions league currently since beIN got the rights.. you've got to pay another subscription for the channel on top of your sports package. would rile a few people up

You're a little backwards with that one, it's the proliferation of smart devices (ie devices that are really streamlined computing platforms with upgradeable OSes/Apps of which the Apple TV is one, it's not a dumb device) that is driving this. The problem though is they are still nowhere near universally pervasive in the home, and there is a lack of standardisation across them, you've got the ATV, various android based boxes, various smart TVs, XBox360/One, Playstations etc all competing and running different OSes. Would be good to see a couple of devices really corner the market so you could get some sort of standardisation in place- I'd say a cheap android device would be the best candidate.

^^ I think you're over thinking things in response to my comment in the context of this thread. My reference to a "dumb device" with respect to Apple TVs stems from the fact that it isn't a full blown OS that you have full control over. It's a sandboxed/controlled environment just like your iPhones etc. (yes they are "smart phones" compared to those of yore, but relative to a device with full control of OS, they are not.). I raised this point to highlight the need for something a bit "smarter" than an Apple TV as you need at least a web browser to connect to Livestream but you also want control over web browser extensions to remove ads and perhaps auto remove the subscription popup if possible. Unless Livestream release an app for Apple TV, the only way you could get this setup to work is if you stream via Airplay from your laptop which defeats the purpose.

The draw has been released for 2016

http://www.nrl.com/portals/nrl/RadEd...L-FullDraw.pdf

and it's a fucking pig for the Roosters from a scheduling point of view

Games will be played on five days over the WHOLE season

Thursday through to Monday with only one game on a Friday
Expect crowd averages to be the lowest in living memory

For the first time in 5 years I will not be buying a season ticket and for the first time in almost 10 years I am seriously considering not buying a membership of any kind

Roosters home games for 2016

Souths - Sunday 4pm
Manly - Saturday 7.30pm
Warriors - Sunday 2pm - likely to be played in Mount Smart
Panthers - Monday 7pm
Knights - Saturday 5.30pm - Central Coast - ticket not included in Membership
Tigers - Sunday 4pm
Storm - Saturday 7.30pm
Bulldogs - Thursday 7.50pm
Sharks - Monday 7pm

Broncos, Cowboys & Dragons TBA

My missus cracks the shits with daytime games as I am away from the family for the whole day
I don't like having beers on Sunday as I have work on Monday. I flat out refuse to go to midweek games as they're a massive pain in the arse travel wise.

I love Friday night and Saturday night games

The draw used to be 5 games Friday and Saturday night games and it was awesome
Now we have Thursday, Monday, Sunday afternoon, Sunday evening etc - it's a fucking joke

The scheduling has been done so they broadcast all the games live to stop people knowing the score before they watch on TV
Seriously? The fans attending the games have been fucked over in favour of people who can't keep their hands off their fucking phones. It's a joke.

There is nothing wrong with delayed broadcasts provided they don't cram 8,000 ads in there. Blame Channel 9 for that one. ****s.

Even if I go to both our Sunday games at 4pm, which I don't really want to - I get four games for the year out of 10
Is that worth buying a season ticket for?

We have a 4 game option for $100 - which is $25 a ticket

What fucking type of offer is that?

The Roosters and the NRL can go and fucking well fuck themselves

I'm over it.

Piss poor scheduling, no shoulder charges, players lying down pretending to be hurt - the game is losing me.
I have just stopped caring enough to make the effort they demand

What used to great fun has turned into a chore and a boring one at that

Round 2 - Storm v Titans, AAMI Park - Sunday 13 March, 6:30pm
Round 5 - Storm v Knights, AAMI Park - Saturday 2 April, 3pm
Round 6 - Storm v Bulldogs, AAMI Park - Monday 11 April, 7pm
Round 8 - Storm v Warriors, AAMI Park - Monday 25 April, 7pm
Round 13 - Storm v Panthers, AAMI Park, Saturday 4 June, 7:30pm
Round 16 - Storm v Tigers, AAMI Park, Sunday 26 June, 4pm
Round 20 - Storm v Roosters, AAMI Park, Saturday 23 July, 7:30pm

This is what fucks me off

The NRL has butchered the scheduling and has not listened to the concerns of the supporters, the clubs or the players

Their only concern is the television scheduling

The NRL needed to grow a pair and say 'no Thursday night football while Monday night football exists"

The Sharks have three Monday night games, as do the Storm
At least the Storm games don't clash with AFL games as they don't play on Monday except at Easter

I can't believe I am not buying a season ticket because the schedule is so daft its pointless to do so.

Lolwut? Thats not gonna happen dude, why would the Roosters simply give us an extra home game? Its not like you're even going to get a much bigger crowd at Mt Smart so that would be completely pointless. If you moved it at all it would more likely be to somewhere like Perth or Darwin (which the Warriors would oppose anyway as they already get shafted with excess travel) or another venue in NZ (which I can guarantee won;t happen as the Warrior PR releases have already stated which away games are being played elsewhere in NZ- and we've got three NZ road games confirmed in Wellington, Christchurch and New Plymouth, none against your mob.

Edit: This from an NZ news article:

Round 5: Sun, April 3, 2.00pm

v Roosters, Allianz Stadium, Sydney

So looks like that one's not moving.
