Roberto Carlos was never in defence though and if you stuck him in that team.... well, you wouldn't need him.

Cash might fit into that team better but Roberto Carlos was always the better player.

Roberto Carlos was pretty overrated imo.

It kills me to say it, but **** that he is, Cashley is the best left fullback of the premier league era.

Still, Javier Zanetti is/was better than both of them.

Best rightback in the league at the moment?

Richards, Walker, Sagna, Ivanovic??

I would say Lahm takes out the title of best in the world.

How many Spurs fans does it take to change a lightbulb? None, they are quite happy living in the shadow.

Maicon? Maicon had 10 new arseholes ripped out of him by Bale last year and Bale was easily handled by Phil Neville and various others this year. A full back still has to be able to defend you know?

was waiting for spurs fans to bring that up...

Its true, he got owned that night. Happens to the best... I remember years ago watching Nesta have an absolute shocker.

The guy is incredible. He creates and scores goals... lots of them.... more than makes up for his defence which isn't anywhere near as bad as that performance against Bale made him look.

Thing is Bale didn't take him apart with anything but pace and the fact that Maicon couldn't get his positioning correct and if you can't do that as a fullback you're pretty fucked.

He hasn't been as good since Mourinho left.... same with a lot of other players at all the clubs he's been at.

Scored this screamer the other day though... still does crazy shit from time to time.

Average to a typical EPL fan who knows nothing about football outside England.

The majority of their national team players do well in other leagues. It's not like the English team....the vast majority of players that pull on the Brazil shirt in major tournaments are quality. Theres a reason they're one of the favourites in every world cup.

where did I say every Brazilian is born a football god?

I said you don't make the Brazilian national team if you aren't good and the majority of players that lineup for them at major tournaments are quality. Its a fact.

Maicon has dropped off since Mourinho left but he's still a great player. If you watched him regularly, you'd see it. Not saying he should be in the Brazil side now though obviously.

Kleberson. Gomes. Gilberto. Lucas, Luiz. The list goes on.

Too play for a county you should be of a certain quality but players slip through the net.

Judging a player solely on their performances in the EPL is stupid.

All of those guys have performed well in the past.... they wouldn't have got signed if they weren't. Would Man U have signed Kleberson if he didn't show he was a quality footballer in the first place?

After he left United, he was alright at Besiktas and has been good for Flamengo.

Of course some players slip through the net (Gilberto) but a lot of players that struggle in England do well in other leagues. Just a different style of football.

Seems like so many people think that to be considered a good player, you have to do well in England..... its a complete wank and a load of shit.

Gunnerblog live tweeting from RVP contract talks

I’m privileged to bring you live coverage of that meeting: the conversation, the croissants,& the contract. Follow at #ArsenalLive

Ivan is already here, waiting for AW to return. He's just popped to Tesco after late panic that RVP might request Earl Grey. #ArsenalLive

Arsene arrives; apologises for being late. Apparently he was driving with the handbreak on. #ArsenalLive

Ivan & Arsene currently discussing which of Ivan’s perplexing myriad of accents would be most suited to the meeting. #ArsenalLive

They’ve plumped for transatlantic drawl. He can always slip in to South African if things take a bad turn. #ArsenalLive

Arsene & Ivan anxiously await RVP. AW idly fondles a pain aux raisin; Gazidis plays Angry Birds. The atmosphere is electric. #arsenallive

Annie Wenger brings in a jug of orange juice. Arsene tests it & is furious when he discovers it has bits in. Robin hates bits. #ArsenalLive

Annie Wenger is crying next door. Ivan Gazidis is hurriedly trying to remove all the bits with a tea-strainer. #ArsenalLive

Ivan asks Arsene if he could briefly explain the offside rule before Robin arrives. Arsene says it is not a good time. #ArsenalLive

Robin is 5mins late. AW is grey with worry. His phone rings, & he looks at it excitedly. It is Park calling. He doesn’t answer. #ArsenalLive

Doorbell: Robin arrives. Darren Dein is with him. Ivan deploys South African mode. #ArsenalLive

Quartet make small-talk. Conversation turns to old friends: Thierry, Cesc, Gael, Samir. A pattern emerges. AW gulps. #ArsenalLive

On Nasri, Ivan jumps in: “Remember when we he got Frimponged? That was DENCH”, and goes for the fist-bump with AW. Silence. #ArsenalLive

Arsene diligently pours himself a bowl of Bran Flakes - he is worried there will not be any significant movement this summer. #ArsenalLive

Robin takes a croissant. Arsene offers him red jam, but Darren convinces him the blue one is better. AW gulps again. #ArsenalLive

Arsene is struggling to cut the fruit loaf. He mumbles something about his knife “lacking a little bit sharpness.” #ArsenalLive

Talk turns to this season. AW congratulates RVP on his individual awards. Robin says he’d swap them all for a trophy. #ArsenalLive

Ivan reaches under the table & produces a ‘3rd place’ trophy. He made it at home, from an egg-cup & silver foil. #ArsenalLive

Robin takes it; hands it to DD, who places it on the floor. Ivan is crestfallen. #ArsenalLive

There is a lull in conversation. Ivan tries to lift spirits by pondering which way up the chocolate digestives should go. #ArsenalLive

IG:“You’d assume chocolate on top, but then the writing is on the bottom. Whereas on a non-chocolate one,the writing’s on top.”#ArsenalLive

Seeking to move things along, Darren asks about Arsenal’s plans for the summer. Ivan says he’s going to Mauritius. #ArsenalLive

Arsene is on his second bowl of Bran Flakes. Vitamin B12: For mental strength. #ArsenalLive

RVP enquires about proposed M'Vila deal. AW explains it broke down over failure to acquire enough apostrophes for club shop. #ArsenalLive

RVP asks about new coaches. AW explains he's hired someone indelibly linked with the fabric of the club. An Arsenal legend... #ArsenalLive

...He motions to the door. Kaba Diawara walks in. Robin tries to leave. #ArsenalLive

Robin calms down as AW explains that Diawara’s role will not extend beyond Pat Rice’s cone duties. #ArsenalLive

AW smiles knowingly. He thinks he has the clincher... #ArsenalLive

AW invites RVP to the patio, where Theo, Vermaelen, Szczesny, & Ramsey perform an acappella version of East 17’s ‘Stay Now’. #ArsenalLive

On the line, "I touch your face while you are sleeping", Theo sheds a solitary tear. AW smiles. RVP is uncomfortable. #ArsenalLive

RVP applauds politely; asks why Ramsey didn’t know words. AW says he planned to use Diaby but he failed a late fitness test #ArsenalLive

They return to the house. Arsene suggests the quartet showed great mental strength to perform in the Hertfordshire chill. #Arsenallive

RVP says he needs time to think. He & DD need to talk to a man about a dog. The dog is in Manchester, or something. They leave. #ArsenalLive

After a long silence, Arsene Wenger gets up, shakes Ivan’s hand, and leaves. Then remembers this is his house, and comes back. #ArsenalLive

Ivan departs. Meeting adjourned. TO BE CONTINUED. Thanks for following #arsenallive.

it annoys me when people judge defenders by the goals they score.

Ryan Taylor scored some great goals for us this season, but fuck he is a shit defender.

Not really but if you think it is, we probably won't agree on anything either of us say about it, so best to just talk about how Stewart Downing is even worse than El-Hadji Diouf.

Not very good and I rated the tournament as a pretty standard Copa America. It gets a lot of hype but everyone knows the World Cup is the real priority for the bigger South American sides. The standard in Copa America has never been THAT amazing.

Edit: but yeah its obvious we won't agree either, so may as well just do something productive and jerk off.

if you are playing a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 then the fullbacks are pretty important insofar as getting forward & providing width, rather than being purely defensive.

This is completely subjective obviously, but it just so happens I objectively agree with it.

Arseblog

And while the Invincibles have rightly been named the best team of the Premier League era, the whole concept of a ‘Premier League era’ is a load of old bollocks. It ignores the fact that football, and great football at that, existed long before Sky and the marketing men got their greedy hands on the game.

“We’ve never seen anything like this”, bleated the pundits after an admittedly exciting end to this season, but frankly anyone who thinks Man City struggling to beat off 10 man relegation fodder at home is more worthy than Arsenal having to beat the reigning Champions by two clear goals at their own ground – and doing so in the final seconds of injury time – is off their rocker.

I still get emotional at this. Ha ha ha ha.
