Reserved my W10 upgrade on my work W8.1 machine. I'm running an enterprise W7 version on my home PC, what's my best course of action for a free copy of W10? I haven't read much into it but I've heard even non-legit OS' are being offered the upgrade as well?

Non-legit copies will get the upgrade, but will still be deemed non-legit and will nag for a key.

Enterprise versions of 7/8 don't qualify for the upgrade at all though. So the best path would be a cheap upgrade to 8, then wait for an invite. Or hold out for cheap 10 keys, but NFI if/when they will appear there.

Side note, just saw this interesting advice.

Quote:

What To Do If You Don't See The Windows 10 Upgrade Notification

Open up Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Task Scheduler
Expand the Task Scheduler Library
Expand "Microsoft" > then "Windows" > then "Setup"
Click on the folder "GWXTriggers"
Click the task "refreshgwxconfig-B"
Go to the Right Side Menu and click "Run"
On the Left Side Menu, click the folder "gwx"
Click the task "launchtrayprocess"
On the Right Side Menu, click "Run"
This is assuming that you have all the necessary updates and you meet Microsoft's requirements for whatever it is.

Cheers for that reddit link, going to pick up a 8.1 Pro N key and see how I go. I had a feeling that it was too good to be true with free copies of W10 to everyone (non-legitimate copies)

Just learned about that last week courtesy of my first Windows phone. I didn't read too far into it, but it seemed like something I should disable.

I couldn't think of a stupider feature to offer the average idiot, damn.

Wifi Sense is piss easy to turn on and off on Windows Phone.

It's been pretty awesome actually, especially when traveling as you can set it to automatically join open networks.

Yeah I can dig that as a phone user, as long as you're aware of the risks (I still opted out though). The thought of millions of people sharing wifi credentials with their FB friend lists though... shudder.

Add to the checklist of things to kill when setting up the new Win10 lappy for Aunty Doris.

Yeah I probably would be a bit more wary if I were using Facebook. But then since when have privacy and FB ever been bedfellows?

"YOU HAVE TO OPT-IN TO FUTURE PRE-RELEASE UPDATES TO GET WINDOWS 10 FOR FREE"

Aside from the point they made about having to remain a guinea pig for MS, that is a very big loophole for the preview.

I mean they can say Win10 preview will result in a free copy of Win10, but when it moves to the subscription service and becomes just "Windows" a year from then, does it not give them an exit strategy for them to be able to say "well you have to install the Windows (subscription) pre release because installing pre releases was part of the deal, but because this not Window10 anymore you will have to start paying once Windows (subscription) is released to public."
Bye now!

Do you even read the last couple of posts before dumping Gawker links? Am I even asking that question?

Doesn't sound like a big bungle to me. More like the tech press prematurely ejaculating. Imagine that!

Are you allowed to transfer licences to a new motherboard/HDD? I'm planning on upgrading my PC at the end of the year so can I transfer Win7 across and then upgrade to 10 or will I have to pay for a new version?

Legally an oem licence is tied to the machine it was sold with. Reality is you'll be fine.

This is a very interesting read.

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2015/07/mi...hones-anymore/

Pretty convincing too. Essentially a prediction that Microsoft is pulling out of the mobile business, and instead focusing on a software push into the Android and ios markets.

Key points being
-laid off 7800 nokia staff
-pretty much no talk of mobile devices
-making ms apps native on android/ios
-making apps for android/ios that arent even on windows phone
-made an api to easily port windows universal apps to android/ios (and visa versa) http://www.theverge.com/2015/4/29/85...s-apps-bridges
- plans to release cortana on android/ios

Basically, ANY big ticket item they had for people to conider a windows phone over an android/ios theyre making available on those platforms.

accounting correction/limiting liabilities/adjusting for tax reasons.

there are multiple ways to look at every decision of a company. sure as shit the guy posting an article on the internet for click-pays isn't in the room when these decisions are made. W10 is about to be released, I don't think they're ready to wipe WP off the face of the planet just yet.

At least this has helped me understand where Jarry's rampant speculation comes from.

I just don't see it. They've been working on core features of Windows 10 like continuum and universal apps. Features that won't truly shine without Win 10 on mobile.

I see it as, theyre looking at making windows 10 shine. on android and ios

As you said Bracko, it's a software supplier making software available to entire phone market.

Theyre pushing their advantages onto the rest of the market. Why would anybody buy a windows phone when everything unique or good about a windows phone, will be available on an android or iphone?

I wouldnt say its rampant speculation at all. speculation yes, but its hardly rampant, there's alot of underlying evidence to support that speculation.

there are lots of advantages to WP. Personally I'm liking it more and more than my Android phone these days. I'm noticing the cracks starting to appear around a few of my go-to apps on android and I think it's losing control on app providers.

As business phones, I think WP have it over the other two OS's, as private phones, the app offerings are too low for mass appeal.

Its a pretty unfortunate situation for old nokia staff to be honest.

Writing down the value of it by 7.2B so soon after purchasing just shows that the new CEO certainly wouldnt have purcahsed nokia himself.

They didn't buy Nokia for their mobile business, they bought it for the patents. Writing the value down is saving them a fuckload of money & would've always been a part of the plan.

Had a similar issue with the PreSonus FireBox when win7 was still a semi new thing, ended up selling it for a much more expensive motu ultralight hybrid mk3 because they already had the driver support, and people were hearing nothing about updates from Presonous. There was a flakey workaround using the vista driver for it that apparently worked for 32bit windows, but it took about a year or so to release a proper driver for it.

Unless it's a fairly newly released interface who's driver software is still in development, or a particularly proactive company when it comes to drivers, you may be waiting a while for an updated one.

It's a pretty old device. Last driver update for it was 5 years ago. It still does everything necessary for my needs just fine though. (There's Windows 98 drivers available if i was tempted to retrograde)

I've plugged in the Allen & Heath Zed10 instead and it's fired up no problems. Not a huuuuuuuge difference in terms of options/flexibility/quality but i did prefer routing via the UA25.

Yet to install Cubase & Reason ... that should be fun!

In terms of kernel and drivers is W10 much of a difference? I know that there were lots of architecture changes under the hood from 7 -> 8 but 10 is just an evolution of 8 right?
