@jize That's annoying, and sounds like something that will be patched. I'm a taskbar on the lefty.

@onijin Pro audio would be the one thing that would make me wait a little bit. Bravely doing it for science o7

Big dealbreaker right there. Sif want windows update enforcing the updating of third party drivers without checking to see if they driver you manually installed is newer. Fuck that for a joke.

that would explain what i experienced last night. After i had installed the current nvidia driver via geforce experience everything was dandy for a little bit, then my screen went to sleep while i was off doing dinner things, came back & woke it up and it was on a no-driver res and only my 2nd monitor. I had to reboot to get my monitors & res back. Video card had an ! on it in device manager until reboot.

No doubt it installed an older newer version. Just checked - i had installed 353.30, Installed driver is now 353.62

Yeah, someone has to take the plunge, so might as well be a willing guinea pig along with Funkedub.

Witcher 3 felt smoother last night. Frame rate was normal but just felt smoother during intense vidya stuff. Probably the placebo effect from shiny new things but whatevs

Cheers Onijin

I'll probably get around to mine on the weekend - I just want to do some long overdue file cleanup / backup / purge before the upgrade. Also the user account on it is the previous owner who threw it in with the CDJs and mixer when I bought them. I'm still using his username and password

I'm getting higher fps in heroes of the storm and hearthstone stopped crashing. GOG games seems to run more stable as well. Not a single crash yet in a GOG game this has to be a record.

Right, so when you create boot media, you don't need to boot from it. Just run setup.exe >.< This may help you avoid:

- GWX compatibility issues
- Failed CD key entry when booting from media
- WinUpdate downloading WIn10 a second time, at 6GB somehow when it was 3GB yesterday
- WinUpdate shitting itself on completion of the 6GB d/l, and the troubleshooting guide telling you to download it a third time

Oh well, I was mentally prepared for the shitfight. Up and running now - and my screen brightness hotkeys are working again! Worth all the pain just for that.

Up and running on the laptop, the upgrade seems to have gone quite smoothly. I'm pretty happy that everything is still in place.

Things are definitely feeling snappier. I'm really liking the edge to edge UI, very sharp. I do have a similar gripe to nrjize tho. I dock the taskbar to the left and it seems silly that the Action Centre appears on the right. Also I don't like having the start menu back, I'm too used to Win8 start now. I'd change it but it looks like my key didn't transfer correctly (reddit key, looks like it might be an issue) and you need an activated copy in order to personalise.

Will have to take a better look at this on the weekend.

Actually a fair concern.

I get that the majority of users just want everything done for them and everything to just work, but seriously MS, you need the option to turn automated shit on and off.

I'm wondering if they finally let wireless network adapters capable of being a "wifi hotspot" for other devices to connect to without the need to create an adhoc secondary wireless LAN.

yes its a little obscure but its for shit like wiring a computer to another end of hte house through walls and using its already in built wireless adapter.

you can do it, just have to run an adhoc admin cmd script on each new reboot.
its dumb.

best update i've seen so far

Man, just cannot get this to install!

Tried Media Creation Kit - "Something happened, something happened".

Tried to wcuault.exe trick, it downloads the update but I get an install error every time... even after deleting all the Windows Update files and starting again.

Try grabbing one of the ISOs Nismo linked. Create USB stick with Rufus, then run the setup exe.

Also, I hope everyone is selecting custom install, not express settings. Otherwise you'll need to go in afterwards and kill the awful new wifi features.

Hmm, well for now I followed step 2 here:

http://www.askvg.com/fix-something-h...ws-10-upgrade/

Was on AU locale.

Cleared my temp folder, started the media creation tool again and clicked "upgrade", and instead of the something happened error the download progress has started.

If this fails on install I'll go the USB stick creation route. But for now cbf.

At 15% by the time I finished this post, so it's not too bad.

20-30-ish minutes for the two I've done so far. I was stuck at 77% for ages on the second one, then kerblammo it rebooted, another five minutes of dumb messages, done.

On average ~1-2 hours* depending on the machine.

I've done 3 now - desktop was prob the fastest but it felt painful coz i was watching it. I think about 45 mins all up maybe less
my laptop (haswell i7 + SSD) prob about an hour maybe less
mrs laptop (ivy bridge i7 + mech HDD) i'm guessing about 1-1.5. Can't confirm coz went to bed mid-upgrade

* talking from clicking go to usable desktop time.

May just risk it, if it gets too close I can sit the thing on the passenger seat on the drive home and I'll just cross my fingers the battery lasts more than half an hour (old 17" i7 lappy with knackered battery, could be cutting things close)

Although nothing important on this lappy, so if the install borks, it borks.

You have to upgrade before you can fresh install anyway, but tbh I'm not really feeling the need to fresh install. It's pretty spiffy.

I did the upgrade but my Win 8 license didn't carry over. So I'm wondering what was the point of upgrading apart from keeping all my settings and installed programs.
Re-entering my license keys makes no difference either.

Shouldn't have asked for a key unless it was a different version of windows to the setup you have. The first image I made was from the ESD on my desktop which ended up ONLY being x64 Pro, and wouldn't install on my laptop (x64 Home) without a key. Got the home/pro iso I linked earlier & it installs fine on either verison without a key.

so those pro/home links are dead.

edit: the "upgrde this pc now" was getting a "something happened" error.

I tried the "put onto usb/disc for another pc" option and am downloading the ISO to a usb stick now.

noticed there is a "windows pro N" edition.
looked it up.
the "N" stands for "bundled media player"

Weird. My reddit version went fine, but different providers or something, who knows.

There's a bunch of convoluted information here on how licensing works: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/c...de_windows_10/

As mentioned earlier, when I first tried to boot from USB and enter a key it failed. According to the above, you can hit skip there, and Win10 will assign a generic key, profile your hardware and activate based on that. I just ran Belarc Advisor to see my system keys out of interest. It's now listing my original reddit key as a "Microsoft - Internet Explorer" key, and the "Microsoft - Windows 8.1 Professional (x64)" key is the generic one from the link above - ending in 3V66T.

I wonder if rolling back to 8.1, then redoing your install via a different method might make a difference. (Suggest just running setup.exe from within 8.1).

Actually it stands for "no bundled media player."

They're a good version to get if you don't care about WMP. Keys are cheaper too.

It didn't ask me for a key, it did the upgrade process as expected. I used the USB install, grabbed x64 home which is the version of 8.1 I was using, so that all should've been fine.

Yeah I think roll-back is the best bet, then verify keys and see what happens. The upgrade was pretty quick even on a 6 yr old laptop so that doesn't bother me. I'm just glad a tried it on this before my desktop machine as it's rockin' reddit keys as well.

Anyone keen to change the default beaming window on the login screen, check this out: https://github.com/PFCKrutonium/Wind...anger/releases

I'm sure there's a registry edit you could do too, but I didn't bother looking that far.

My Traktor laptop was being a bit fux0red earlier in the week and Windows(7) was trying to recover but couldn't. I wasn't going to push it to 10, but i figured I'd make a bootable Win10 USB to "'save" it. By the time I'd made the USB it was back to its usual self ... I did the upgrade anyway. All my digital music is on a separate partition so I was happy to fuck around with the OS.

Creation of the boot media and the install was completely hassle free. As i posted on Facebook, to troubleshoot the NI Audio4 and X1 I simply uninstalled and reinstalled the driver package currently on the NI website (who've said they're not yet supporting Win 10).

Had a decent mix today and everything it just tickety boo.

Now ... as for these automatic updates, there's nothing stopping you hitting the services and disabling the "Windows Modules Installer". It's habit for me to look at the services on Windows and disable shit I never use/need.
For all of your musical needs*
