greetings Androids

About a month ago I purchased a Samsung 'Galactic telephone' which I haven't really worked out what it's for.

1. Is it the one where I can impress my friends by chucking it in the water.

2. More seriously, is there a version of Sim City, or Civilization, or another worthy sort of city/state building game, that I can buy? I DL'ed Freeciv but it's pretty shit, can't zoom in and the icons are tiny. I have sausage fingers.

thanks.

I've had my 16GB Gnex since launch and I still haven't filled it. Still have about 3GB left. 16GB is all I will need.

a year on and i'm down to 5.5GB, although i have 1GB in cache (lolwut). only 500mb of audio. N4 hasn't skipped a beat so i could easily make this baby last another 2 years

by then i will have taken enough pics, recorded vids, installed apps and games to use it all up, even with a bit of housekeeping.. 32GB would be a nice buffer for someone not married to the bi/yearly upgrade cycle

1) which one do you have exactly? i think it's only the sammy activ that's waterproof?

2) strategy games are pretty bad on a small touch screen. i haven't played any worthwhile, more for PC imo

My n4 has recently been wigging out. I'll be using it and the 'enter SIM PIN' screen pops up and I've been disconnected. It's happened maybe 4 times in 3months.

What other advantages of flashing my N7 do I get other than being able to transfer photos from an SD card for free (as opposed to the $3. 81 app) is it worth it?

my point being that even when the dollar was at parity we were/are still being rorted on electronic goods, but google were one of the few that gave us (close to) parity pricing with the N4. granted the forex rate was better then but i see nothing to indicate they won't continue with an aggressive pricing strategy, after all i doubt google do the nexus for the margins...

i see this question a lot and imo if you're not sure what or why you need to root then you don't really need it

if you root you can use titanium backup to backup all your apps settings etc. or put specific antivirus or antitheft apps on.

you may need it for specific apps but you don't need root for either functions

you don't really need titanium backup anymore either now that all your contacts etc etc are synced from your google account. LOL @ people who don't use gmail with an android phone.

fyi there are backup apps now that can backup app data without root. You only need root for system data

somewhat unrelated but it looks like kitkat will be getting rid of the black status and button bars on the top and bottom respectively. looks nice! although i've been doing it on and off last 3 years. (root your nexuses you jerks, that's what they're designed for!)

haha! well i'll have to politely disagree on that one. after running custom roms for ages i went back to stock last year and i didn't like the lack of functionality out of the box.

don't get me wrong - stock android is superb but i do like to have the ability to modify just about everything from the drawer, to the status bar, lock scree, home screens etc.

anyway google flagship phones are practically designed to be rooted, so why not? fledz when was the last time you had to contact google for android support?

anyway you can have root access and still have the stock rom.

e: or were you guys trolling?

I don't want nor need to root it though. Why would I want to? I did that before when I wasn't happy with the UI in a lot of cases, as well as with the older version of Windows. Now I have no reason to.

It looks great, runs fast and does everything I need it to.

Not trolling, just don't think any of that stuff you mentioned actually adds anything particularly useful - I like the simplicity and un-clutterdness of stock - and the fact it requires zero tinkering in my free time when a new OTA update is released.

oh you're talking about a phone. I must admit there are a bunch of conveniences in cyanogen that stock doesn't have that would annoy me if i didn't have them, but i'm sure when i get my next phone which will most likely be a nexus6/7 that i'll get used to it pretty damn fast. Or google will have added those features as standard by then.

personally i think stock android is a bit like an iphone. i.e. too simplistic and functionally a little bit limited.

also, franco kernel is my major reason for root but i'm on a gnex so it's got a shitty battery life when stock. the battery life doubled when i flashed franco.

e: actually it's even doubled when on the cyanogen kernel.

what he said.

and I get two days out of my battery for my usage habits, so I don't see any reason to root.

re your other points Spicy..

No issues with stock n4 battery life here btw - crap battery life is more of a samsung feature of that particular era in smartphones rather than stock android imo. Changing kernels seems more of a bandaid to the problem of the phone having a poor battery/processor thermal design to begin with.

Stock android is still a lot less pared down for simplicities sake than iOS though - they just haven't needlessly replicated functionality in every part of the UI like you see in some of the custom roms. They've struck the right balance to me without being too simple or un-customisable.

Having widgets on both your lock and home screens I don't really understand personally (perhaps since I'm not using it as a media player or don't social media whore?) Aside from the swipe across camera function on stock lock screen the only at a glance info I could ever really need for that part of the phone would be the mail/sms/call notify icon (which is done in the status bar already).. Anything more complicated than that I'm always going to unlock my phone and interact with it anyway.

Don't think the status bar and home screens would actually benefit from change either - adding anything else to me would simply distract.. was definitely one of the people who used to use 7 home screens full of icons with third party launchers a while back, until realising its pretty much like having wall to wall icons on a windows desktop.

That's the way I see it anyway - I'm sure you get a kick out of endlessly tweaking the shiz out of your phone, but to me, the payoff and time wasted reading about what rom/kernel are the best to run just aren't worth it, when instead I could be doing something funner with my free time.. so I let a crack team of high paid UI designers at Google decide for me what the best GUI layout for my phone is. If they really break something one day - then, just then, I might root my phone (or run a launcher again).
Let Life Support and Dr Rudi do it right for you.

oh right. well for some reason or another i didn't read the bazillion comparisons out there on "the internet", so i wasn't aware. good to hear though! it means the N5 will be that much more awesome for me

@diarx: cheers for the cool story extended club remix. i guess the bottom line is that these things are completely subjective, which is totally fine. at least google's nexus range gives the user an option to easily unlock and root the devices if they wish to do so. thanks google!

diary you always seem to confuse rooting with custom ROMing..

if you want to use sixaxis, adaway, etc etc.. THESE REQUIRE ROOT. there is no way around it. i'm not flashing kernels or tweaking the amount of bounce on my homescreen overscroll (lol sorry spicy ). i just want these apps..

i agree that rooting is like 95% unncessary these days, but to keep equating it to a personal anecdote about prior past experience with a particular handset completely ignores the point of what rooting is for

one feature of stock that i hate is the unlock screen. how you have left and right widgets prior to unlocking. so irritating. i use an app to shutdown the side screens so i just have the one unlock area. i think i needed root for it.

dashclock is a heap. the areas are just too big on a phone. I use sense clock on every phone I have and assign email to the hours and alarm clock to the minutes. it has weather and vitals (if you want)

much more compact than dashclock.

a heap of?

google search reveals a couple of results for sense clock, but they all look garish. DNW

besides, they're not even the same thing from what i can tell. sense is just a clock widget. dashclock is a replacement lock screen/widget, and the only one with custom extensions

tl;dr - brackolan pls
