W̶i̶n̶d̶o̶ws ̶9̶ Windows 10
http://live.theverge.com/microsoft-w...ent-live-blog/

Windows 9 launch event tomorrow at 3am.

What to likely expect

- New start menu (with live tiles in it)
- Choice on whether you want start menu or start screen
- Modern UI apps no longer forced full screen. Can be resized and opened in desktop mode as normal applications would behave
- Virtual Desktops
- Search icon moved to taskbar
- Cortana (Digital Assistant)
- OTA style one-click updating
- Unified Windows App store for all devices (including xbox one)
- Strongly rumoured that it will be a free upgrade for windows 8 users

Wonder if it will still be completely useless for tablet artists.

Edit: by tablet artists I mean wacom/cintiq tablets. The lag on input made Windows 8 unusable for me.

What do you mean? I'm running Win8.1 with an Intuos Pro 4 and Pen & Touch Small, use them constantly in place of a mouse and haven't noticed any input lag at all? The new Wacom drivers are finally decent and make it much easier to deactivate Windows Touch and Type stuff.

As for Windows 9, no confirmation that it will even be called that yet. The codename in Threshold, which is important because of the underlying architecture. Normally MS see a 3 - 6 month cycle for pushing out milestone versions for testing but for Threshold they're looking at reducing that to 1 month, more here: http://www.zdnet.com/why-microsofts-...tag=TREe9f9a2b

Cortana on the desktop would be awesome, it is done really well on WP8.1.

A unified notification center would be great to see.

I'm meh about the return of the start menu. I don't miss it, and I don't find it Jarring using the start screen. I actually really like that I can fit many more apps on the start screen and group them(I was one to always push the start menu recent apps to the highest it would go anyway).

OTA and Virtual Desktops, yes please.

Sounds like they've finally fixed the problem then, sweet. When I upgraded to it, there was no way to turn off the tablet (Surface) functionality, Wacom forums were full of people with the same problem, so I had to drop back down to Windows 7.

Microsoft officially announces Windows 10 for phones, tablets, PCs, and more

Quote:

For whatever reason, Microsoft decided to skip the number 9 entirely and name Windows 10 as the successor to Windows 8.1. The new OS version will unsurprisingly come with the features that have been rumored for the next Windows iteration over the past few months.

On the PC side, Windows 10 seems to be all about convincing those who are still sticking with Windows 7 to finally upgrade.

So the Start Menu is back, though with a distinct ‘Metro’ vibe. It has tiles and icons that are a blend of classic and new universal apps. Tiles can be resized. The new Search feature in the Start Menu pulls results from the Web as well as local content.

Users of Windows with mice and keyboards are finally taken seriously again, with the dual-environment feel of Windows 8 now totally gone (or so Microsoft claims). ‘Modern’ apps can run in windowed mode. Hence, Snap View (launched in Windows 7) now works with both types of apps, and it’s even been expanded to allow for a maximum of four apps to be on the screen at the same time.

The company has added something it calls “task view”, which is akin to Expose in OS X, aiming to make multitasking easier (this is pictured in the image below). The oft-leaked multiple desktops feature is indeed in too. And to appease the geeks, the Command Prompt has finally received paste support.

For users of Windows 10 on touchscreen devices, the Charms bar is still there, alive and well. This despite some past rumors to the contrary. When you swipe from the left, you’re presented with the task view.

If you buy a convertible laptop / tablet that has a touchscreen but can also be used with a keyboard and touchpad or mouse, Microsoft has you covered too, with something it calls Continuum. This switches the UI based on touch or keyboard input.

Tomorrow a Technical Preview build will be released for laptops and desktops, while the one for servers will come at some yet-undefined point in the future. The Preview will be available through the new Windows Insider Program.

The final build of Windows 10 will be out “later” in 2015, possibly around the middle of the year. Microsoft will talk more about the consumer-facing features inside Windows 10 at its Build conference in April. That’s when we’ll find out more about the new “universal apps”, for example. The “general intent” is to make Windows 10 “available as an update for the vast majority of devices”.

Windows 10 will be the next version of Windows Phone too, though it’s still unclear exactly when it will hit phones. Microsoft officials have said they’re developing it (and Windows 10 for ARM-based tablets) at the same time as the version for desktops, trying to “blend the experience” across devices that have screens ranging from 4 inches to 80 inches. A unified application store for every device running Windows 10 has been promised.

While the platform will scale to accommodate different hardware, this time it looks like Microsoft has finally learned not to try and use the exact same UI on touch-based devices as on those that come with a mouse and keyboard. So there will be a “single design approach”, but adapted for each class of device.

nice fix Mad Mike.

wtf @ the skipping the number.

You can't more clearly state "THIS IS NOT WINDOWS 8" than by skipping a number

also, bit more info here

http://www.theverge.com/2014/9/30/68...shots-features

it actually looks pretty good. As long as they keep all the shortcuts from windows 8 i'm happy (don't see why they wouldnt)

right clicking bottom left corner = way better than a start menu ever was

with the monthly updates too. I'd say this is going to be a pretty damn good OS. Personally i love windows 8 too and this seems to be an expansion of it.

If it performs better too i'll def be adopting. (it'll also depend on driver support etc, however talks of them making it work universally with everything makes me think this wont be an issue)

Yep. Complete design clash, looks like an adware infestation. Glad it's optional - I'm not going back to a start menu now.

Fuck off start menu. The start screen actually works if you spend 30 seconds learning the interface instead of screaming the sky is falling.

Also, playing around with the new laptop last night and loving the touchscreen. I'm finding I'm naturally swiping and touching for some actions, particularly in metro aps. Touchpad also has designated sections on the outer edges where swiping them is the same is the swiping gestures on touchscreen. Works really well.

I'd shunned apps so far, but just set up a new laptop for mum, and had a look to see what she might like. Turns out the weather, maps and food apps are all really nice, and now I feel like adding some for myself.

Trivia: The only way to get a 1080p Netflix stream on PC is with the win8 app.

Exactly this. Never used anything metro on my old laptop that's been running Windows 8 since beta release years ago. New laptop & suddenly they all make a lot more sense. Probably helps that there's a lot more apps now.

What's really annoying though is the complete lack of integration between Microsoft and Google. Realise this won't ever happen but would really likely my Google Calendar and contacts to sync with Windows calendar and people apps. Tried a few 3rd party apps that claimed to do it but none of them worked.

The start screen works really well with a touch screen device that isn't huge - but imo having it on 24/27" non touch screens at work and home for some reason is just too jarring to your workflow. I think even part of the problem for me is the way the start screen does that distracting fancy animation "swoop in" effect thing which takes a bit over a second to show everything in place. I'm sure you can turn that shit off somewhere, but to me losing complete focus on the desktop is still a bit like being blindfolded, spun around and then taking a second to figure out which direction you're facing again.

Once the start menu comes back, I'll be using the smaller tile format for everything to keep it super compact, and only have semi regularly used apps (games, irfanview, PS etc) visible, with frequent use browsers/important shiz pinned to taskbar as per normal.

Can't go back to 7 now, I cringe every time I see the archaic file copy progress dialogue box nowadays.

Bye now!
