On line the odd whiskey coy-

and Nicks-
http://www.nicks.com.au/index.aspx?link_id=76.853
there are other really good sites but these are a couple of my favorites for your normal range and something different.
But tell me where abouts in Sydney and I'll try to find something for you.

Vintage have Dalwhinnie and Oban and a couple of the Glenmorangie varieties on special at the moment. Very hard to go wrong with any of those.

I just got a bottle of 30 year old Ballantines for my birthday. Stoked that they thought that highly of me, sad panda that its a blend. Still, I expect it's pretty amazing (haven't tried it yet)

What do you mean sad panda? on of the most expensive whiskies in the world is a blend,
a blend can be a lot more consistant than a malt and that's the reason for blends as well as the fact that there are alot of great single malts that go into blends (depending on the brand) a 30yo is a joy blend and probably has malts in it that are no longer distilled so savor every drop.

I prefer single malts. More character, less compromise.

Expensive doesn't equal excellent taste though. I have always preferred single malts cause, like db said, more character.

I tried it last night - was unbelievably smooth and rich but I dunno, it just seemed to lack a wow factor or something unique. This is just being pedantic about it of course, on the whole it's pretty amazing.

Anyway, it's back on the shelf now for very special occasions only.

maybe cheaper because it doesn't have to travel round the world + import duties etc.

Yeah expense doesn't equal great flavor profile eg tried a $2500 (will have to get back to you on the name of it though) single malt however didn't like that as much as I liked the middleton 43yo Irish single malt.
But all of them have a place weather it be Chivas, Black Label, Dimple or Laphoraig, Ardbeg, Taliska.
Blends are usually about consistancey single malts are about luxury.

Still costs about $78 not that much cheaper and when Vintage cellars has 20% off any two malts you can pretty much get it for that price.

as a general rule, however.

especially as I prefer the salty anodine heavily peated flavours over the typical highland flavour profiles.

favorites?
and have you tried one of the latest single malts to reach our shores?

Benraich (and if you like peaty) 10yo Curiositas tasted it about two months ago and it brilliant it's got a great price point to, $65 but I've only seen it in vintage cellars atm.

into whiskey?

started off on cheap blends to get me drunk when I was young, then slowly worked my way up through better blends when I had more money, developed a taste, then discovered Laphroaig 10yo and the world of Islay single malts ...

With tequila and rum, I came in at the top end of the market, and have never been tainted by cheap and nasty stuff.

Well that explains it then I too started off with JW red and swore off all whiskey until about 4yrs ago, now I'm only allowed to drink small amounts so it's all about quality not quantity.
I decided to collect after I found out the resale value from a couple of forums and the world whiskey index. Very interesting stuff.
I can't say I have been as lucky as you in the not tasting crappy stuff but gotta go there with my job.

Been drinking the Laphroaig quarter cask...compared to the 10yr, that is some serious fucking flavour...

definatly needs just a drop of water, but is stunning IMO.

I've just switched to the same scotch. My previous bottle of Ardberg ran out on the weekend, and I was tossing up between opening the Laphroaig quarter cask and a Caol Illa 18yo. The Laphroaig won out in the end.

Bought a bottle of Talisker 18 YO for my bro to celebrate his baby last month...that shit is fucking divine!!! No water required

Got myself the 15 YO Sherry Cask one on the way back, totally different flavour, and a bit bity, but still very nice!

Glenfiddich - GTFO - the standard anyways, the older ones are alright...but if I'm drinking whiskey from that end, I'd rather a bottle of Johnny Walker Black (not a single malt, I know!) than either Glenfiddich or Chivas Regal
Pete Gordon - Deep and Low

Slower tempo but still with balls, deephouse, slow-mo, futurehouse, nudeep, indie, nudisco, hints of progressive, whatever the fuck you want to call it, just good shit! Get on it

Maybe not required, but try it with just a little - the nose will open up and you will get a lot of different flavours. Trust me on this.

Was just about to post
Talisker
or
Glenlivet

as the OP's best option, and realised thread is over 2 yrs old. Maturing well.

Give me the Laphroiag or Macallan over anything else I have had though..

I wouldn't clean my stove with JD..Used to be my last drink of the night on the rocks, or the lets fuck shit up drink. then I found proper whisky, got a job, threw out my ice pipe and never looked back

Picked up a bottle of Ardmore Traditional Cask last night...just decided on the spot to give it a go without much knowledge of it...

its alright...definatly doesn't go near other single malts, but very drinkable.

First one I had without water and was a little 'meh' but the second added a couple of drops and it really opened up...was even a little sweet to be honest.

I just got Lagvulin 12yo cask strength($100) and Macallam 10yo sherry butt ($90)
so got about $40 0ff.

Only trouble is their prices are already about 20% over other places...

$99 glenfarclas 15yo @ Vintage cellars, (without the 20% off)

$109.00 at Dan Murphys how inflated????

$20 @ celebrations and anywhere up to $25 at other independants

I guess you don't shop as much as I do when I want something.

Went to buy a six pack of beer at dans yesterday. Came out with a couple of old favourites in addition.

Glenmorangie quinta ruban (bottled at 46% now) is an improvement on the old port-wood finish, very drinkable.

Also decided it had been too long since I'd had a bottle of dalwhinnie and it's smokey goodness.
