Roy Davis Junior has a wicked combination in his catalogue of really soulful, garage house and twisted, fucked up acid house/techno.

Hear me out on this one, Woody McBride/DJ ESP.

For every hardcore monstrosity there is probably a quality raw/acid/UR era Hood & Mills type bomb if it can be pitched down enough to be given time to breathe in the low to mid 130s. Your interest in his catalog is probably lessened if you can't get his stuff digitally or don't have decks with a range of +/- 16.

Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of stuff that is seriously good in its own right too (releases on Synewave for example). I'm just conscious that there could be a bit of a stigma attached to his productions.

Terrace ‎– Round Up

Genre:
Electronic
Style:
Techno
Year:
1992

http://www.discogs.com/Terrace-Round-Up/master/273903

'Round Up' sure breathes that certain 'classic' Techno spirit from around 1992 with every second of its running time. Makes me think of Kirk DeGiorgio and the releases on his groundbreaking but shortlived A. R. T. label or even some of Warp's 'Artificial Intelligence' releases. Yes, it's that good - although a little less experimental than the aforementioned records. Definitely not your average, harsh and dancefloor destroying 'Djax-Up' record.

The beats are straight without exception, the percussion patterns are clever and thoughtfully varied - and made with the usual Roland gear. Deep, sometimes even jazzy basslines float underneath beautiful synth pads and bleepy melodies. Stefan Robbers arranges those elements with great creativity and keeps things flowing.

Beautiful, futuristic melancholy.

This is a hidden gem. Some of the best uplifting strings/melodies you will hear from this phenomenal label. He reserved most of his mellower moments for the terrace releases and kept the mayhem for the acid junkies. S. Robbers came of age whe he made this release.

If you do not own a copy of this you have a bit of underground music history missing from your collection. Presented in a gatefold sleeve with a list of instruments and influences, get a copy now, you will not be disappointed!

His contributions, as very much an equal of Shed's, to the first few Styrax Leaves releases and his Detroit Black, Red and Blue EPs on a.r.t. less were as excellent an interpretation of Detroit techno as you'll hear.

If Discogs is correct he hasn't released anything since 2010. Have no idea where he is or what he is doing but it should include producing bombs like these:

Don Williams - Exhibiton (B side of Detroit Red EP - a.r.t.less 2202): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUYfpEH28KU

Which in turn reminds me of the Eevolute record label, and artists like (co-founder) Wladimir Manshanden.

Small as the sample size may be in recent years I have to say that a Don Williams set may well be what I look forward to more than anything else.

Check out this belter:

Well lets see how this goes.

Not sure if I ever got around to posting about Exos.

http://www.discogs.com/artist/1285-Exos

Said it before but there is a certain romance about Icelandic dub techno.

Check out some of the quality below. He produces and plays some genuinely hard choones but I couldn't find any of them on youtube. His soundcloud also has some pretay, pretay good sets.

I really need to buy My home Is Sonic. I've replayed that 'W.e.' track so many times in Don Williams 2012 LET mix. Works so well slightly pitched up.

Did you get around to it? I got a copy of the CD from Discogs and it is well worth it.

Has anyone else noticed that the Thule and AE releases have been deleted from Beatport?

I am certain that My Home is Sonic, for one, and and the remixes of Seveneleven were available but it no longer seems to be the case.

Did I dream it?

Not yet... it is essential though. Thule and AE probably just took their stuff off beatport. Might have something to do with them re-releasing some of the catalog. Who knows

Keeping the theme consistent, it's probably time that Simon Flower's ridiculously good Nurture label got a mention.

http://www.discogs.com/label/2477-Nurture

Dozzy's sets from 2007 to 2010 (well the ones available on the net anyway) are littered with tracks from Peak:Shift (Flower), Son.Sine and Micronism.

Having mentioned Dozzy it is appropriate to start things off with the spectacular Mudita by Son.Sine which Dozzy used as the opening track to his legendary Labyrinth 08 set. The Upekah EP it is taken from is one of the great dub techno EPs (it was re-issued by Delsin in 2013).

Below is a sample of the EP (Mudita is the last track).

The most logical place to take this is to Micronism's Steps to Recovery EP which is another belter headed by the immense Constructing Space which is another bomb around which Dozzy constructed his Labyrinth masterpiece. Unfortunately I can't find a sample of it anywhere (they are all miss-titled as "Steps to Recovery" which is the title track from the EP).

As for Flower himself Peak:Shift Tactical Grace, from the One Road In, One Road Out EP, gives you a pretty good idea of what his contributions on Nurture are about.

The Steps to Recovery EP is getting repressed by Delsin and will be available as of 19 January 2014.

Trackmodes is sick. I love the Duel ep collab with Jay Denham, so sick.

Agree with the Exos pick too. Was lucky enough to have a mate well into him a few years back so scored original vinyl issue of My Home is Sonic. Win.

I'll have to check the Mechanisms you mentioned.

Has anyone mentioned Kit Clayton? While not strictly techno still a bloody good producer from back in the day

Not really forgotten. Delsin reissued some In Sync that got a bit of hype.. but still an underrated techno supergroup.
