ive said it before and i'll say it again, the wider the better in clubs. you can pretty much always get closer but rarely can get further back (and if you can, you have half a dozen clowns jumping/waving in front of your shot). for dx, the 12-24 lived on my camera, now its the 20-35 on fx which is almost the same range, wouldnt mind wider but that would be a sacrifice in either ap. or size/weight (or $$$$)

Well that explains the smooth reds... theory kind of explored here http://www.ishootshows.com/2010/01/2...-capture-nx-2/

Another reason why Nikon and Canon should embrace a standard raw file and support.

i think 28mm would be as wide as i'd need for a club, i've shot club stuff with a 10-22mm on crop and 17-40mm but i stay away from the wide end usually. super wide angle isn't very flattering for people.

With the 24 to 70 I'd have to keep my hand above my head all night to stop people bumping into it, spilling drinks on it, etc. With the 24mm prime I could rotate it towards by body and be a little more compact.

I shot this last weekend at my old haunts for their 7th birthday. It's pretty indicative of the crowds I had to deal with and why the size of the 24 to 70 is not ideal. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fb...type=3&theater

I shot this on a 18 to 55 kit lens on the d700 set to dx mode. Set to 18mm all night so equivalent around 28mm or so.

The bloke who has been taking photos there shoots with a 24mm as well. It's about as wide as you can go without too much distortion.

lol truth

tho im happy to sacrifice the fatties for practicality. theres also always the option of cropping in post from a wide but no coming back from a daunting in your face forehead to collarbone letterbox crop from a long lens, it can be just as unflattering.

Took a bunch of shots at a gig on the weekend mostly using my 30mm Sigma F.1.4 prime, was pretty happy with how they came out. These were my faves, the shot of the vocalist was actually a still taken using my JVC camcorder while shooting video hence the shit resolution, but I really liked that particular shot so cleaned it up in post a bit.

you really need to set your focal point to something other than center. you could try focusing than recomposing but with f1.4 (which im guessing is what you shot at) its going to be off or the subject will have moved from the focal plane, so moving that center square will be the way to go.
also watch your shutterspeed if youre shooting in Ap priority, if you run out of iso to compensate that motion blur is going to get real nasty

^focal point at 1.4 is fucking hard, there's always SOMETHING out of focus. I was a bit lazy that night and just left it on auto as I didn't really go with the intention of getting stills, normally I would work it manually.
Drummers are just about impossible, you basically have to choose between having the kit or the drummer in perfect focus I've found.
I generally go shutter priority rather than aperture- somewhere in the 1/80-1/125 range, which will normally result in f1.4 anyway unless there's a ton of stage light. It's normally close enough to adjust the exposure in post.
Anyway at least the shot of the bass player (which is the keeper out if the four) is pretty much perfect in terms of focus IMO, I like that the head/hair is a touch blurry, it gives it some motion and puts the emphasis more on the other elements (instrument, tattoo, leathers) which are more interesting.

that girl in the last photo with the brown jeans...
This is no love song and it serves no use, but if you want to sing along to some verbal abuse
It might make you feel better and it's good for the soul, take four letters and let's rock n roll

i'm not sure if you follow f1 at all, but they got pirelli to make tyres that degrade very quickly to try and spice up the racing by making life hard. that's a whole other debate but the result is SHITLOADS of marbles on certain parts of the track. they open up the singapore circuit after the race to make getting out easier and the whole track is littered with marbles.

by the end of a race on a lot of tracks even the main straight has a clearly defined "clean" path aka racing line

nah, dont really follow it. having a softer tyres to make it more "interesting" is a bit silly tho! its like therye trying to make it like nascar where ppl are just going in the hope they see a big crash! :S i can imagine what the track will be like near the end, just waiting for webber to do a scandinavian flick into the home straight

nah it wasn't about crashes, it was to spice up strategy by increasing required pit stops and having cars at different pace to encourage more overtaking.

it's backfired quite badly this year though.
