well credit to these two for digging in and showing some resilience.

I reckon we should just bat as long as possible.

The only way to win is to get 150-200 in front with 2 sessions to go and have a crack.

Nah I tend to agree it's an option. South Africa probably will not set a target with only a day to go, and if they do, they have to bowl us out on what is a 4th day road with no spinner. I don't think we have enough time to get ahead and then bowl them out, so that's really the only chance for victory.

I am warming towards trying to get 150 in front, and then bowling for the last two sessions on day 5. That would give us 60 overs to bowl at them.

another 250 in 2.5 hrs isnt a stretch.

150 in 2 sessions is easily attainable, especially since basically the same batting line up got 440 in 4 sessions a few years back.

we could try and smack 100-150 in the first hour and a half, then put them in 200 behind with 5 hours to go.

Do it!

I think so. His early-innings technique is better than Pontings. Such a boss.

Interesting that Philander has been so ineffective. Of all the bowlers I would have thought he would be most threatening on a road. Good signs.

Gotta remember that this was a day 3 wicket. Not the curator's fault that the Saffers picked no spinners, and effectively 5 right arm seamers.

This is why test cricket is awesome, sure it might be a little boring with the way the wicket is playing but after day one we looked all but gone. Fast forward two days and some great batting by Australia and we are now in a position (albeit unlikely) to win this test. C'mon Australia!

Read the rest of the statement perhaps?

A whole day with no sun to dry it out and form cracks, but wet hot and humid which is ideal weather for growth, the pitch would almost go backwards. Also just so you don't think I'm talking out my arse I'm quoting what they've said on ABC 774

also, we dont have to get 10 wickets tomorrow, only 9 \m/... and one is a recognised batsman

Still, need to get a defendable lead before getting too excited.

What is all this talk about defendable lead, or giving them something to chase? We have only batted once. There is nothing for SA to "chase". We are at zero risk of losing. We only need to get enough runs in front to give us enough time to push for a pretty incredible innings victory (or potentially chasing a tiny target in 4th innings)..

I meant defendable as in for a victory.

We could declare now, but its hardly a defendable lead in terms of achieving an unlikely victory.

We'd be worrying about a defendable lead if this were our second innings which it isn't, Armin.

Can't imagine Clarke batting much longer than when Huss gets his hunji or a 100 lead if we come out blazing.

150 if we get it quickly. They start 1-0. Lose a couple of wickets 3-20 and another 130 seems a long way away. That said, it'll be a draw.

I used the wrong terminology. I just meant a winnable total without having to bat again.

I am we'll aware it's not our second innings.

150 would be good. I don't think we'd get them in 2-2.5 sessions but we are the only side with a front line spinner on a wicket the curator said will turn.

At least put them on the defensive before Adelaide and Perth. A confident SA on the type of pitch we've had a the WACA the last 2 years would be a fucking nightmare.

Not a lot, no. But we did manage to take 6-70 odd when not bowling like shit ****s. TBH i'd rather this than the 4 sub 150-run innings that have been plaguing shield lately. Mainly because we'd probably lose out

If we do draw it would be considered a loss for SA, they had the game by the throat and just needed to land one or two more quick wickets.

Another 3/4 day in the sun for SA will be a confidence killer.

^ agree. Not going to win the test, but definitely will dent the confidence of the best pace attack in the world if we bat out most the day without losing another wicket.. Imagine taking 1/650ish over 2 and a half days

Yep. This.

Get about 150 up on them today if possible, demoralise the SA attack a little then give the bowlers a session and a half to have some bowling practice before the next test.

Half the SA team is going to the Great Barrier Reef for a holiday between tests, and if we give them another spanking today the doubts in the minds of the SA attack will be worth the draw.

Is it a no result wicket if we had the extra day? We made up 3 hours so I guess it was and in that case deserves a bit of criticism.

Giving our bowlers a decent crack could dent the confidence of their top order at the same time. Getting Smith again cheaply LBW for example.

looks like Michael Clarke is thinking what I was thinking...

MICHAEL CLARKE has picked up where he left off in front of local audiences, this time saving a match and, remarkably, giving Australia the faintest hope of a win that seemed impossible 24 hours earlier. Now, having done all that could be asked with the bat and more - his 218 not out was his 20th Test century and his third time past 200 in less than a year - much will come down to his other trump card, his captaincy, on the final day of the first Test.

Once again this was a captain's knock in name and nature. Most importantly, it arrived when it was needed most. A draw is still overwhelmingly the likely result - Saturday's full day of rain should prevent a thrilling finish - but thanks to Clarke, in conjunction with an outstanding Ed Cowan (136) and Mike Hussey (86 not out), Australia are all of a sudden in with a sniff against the world No.1 nation.
''I definitely think we can have a crack at winning,'' Clarke said. ''I think the key is tomorrow morning to be nice and positive and see how we go leading up to lunch, then give ourselves a couple of sessions to try and bowl South Africa out.

''I think we take a lot of confidence out of the day we bowled on [Sunday]. I think we took seven wickets for about 200 runs so that's really positive for our bowlers.

''Hopefully the sun is out and the wicket deteriorates a little more. It's a worth a go in my opinion. We want to try and win. The wicket is still pretty good for batting, though, so we're going to need a lot of things to go our way. I know it's going to be tough to win the Test from here but it's worth having a crack.''
