Hope this answers those who were saying this test was, like, soooo boring on day 2.

Almost got a result, it went down to the wire. Stats will record a draw but I reckon people watching online/on tv and at the game will think back on some epic performances.

Well done Faf!

with the keeper up it just changes their thinking and can bring a bowled or LBW in to play. it worked because he edged one, unfortunately unless its a fine edge straight into the gloves it is fucking hard and hence went down.

risky play and you risk that kind of situation but worth a crack when things aren't happening, can force a mistake

Johnson. Worst. Can't even be consistent in shield. Gets picked. Bird, Cutting & McDermott all deserved a spot over him based on recent form. Over Hazlewood too. Hastings, okay.

Johnson shouldnt be picked because of his previous efforts, not on his recent form. He's been pretty fucking dangerous this year, albeit in his usual leaky runs way

Ali McDermott and Cutting have lack bite and really rely on bowler friendly tracks. Bird has been really decent lately, so you're right there.

I recon Mennie for SA has been gold. His figures don't really do him justice, but he's bowled some demon spells. Also leaks runs though

I'd put that over Cardiff in 2009. Disappointed we didn't win this given they were 4 down overnight but that was some immense effort there. Hopefully we'll see a result in Perth.

Yeah the end of Cardiff was a bit of a cluster fuck with North bowling upteen overs at the end. Siddle was just brilliant today. I love that guy even more now.

that was an absorbing day's play, and this is why 20/20 doesnt compare to test cricket.

The ability for a test to completely change direction each day is immense.

From the aussies epic first day, to the saffers fighting back on day two, to the aussies grabbing the ascendency on day three, to the saffers fighting back, then falling short on day four, then their ability to hold on for a draw.

THAT WAS AWESOME!

test had everything.

Two very good teams in difficult circumstances. Both teams lost a key bowler, kallis batted against the odds, siddle bowled until complete exhaustion and nearly won it, and du plessis in his debut test lasted the innings.

Cereally amazeballs.

Yeh I can understand them wanting to put pressure on the batsman, but they're also putting pressure on Wade. Wade's keeping hasn't been anything to write home about either. It seemed like a decent delivery, moved away a little and caught the edge. I don't think you can claim the edge was caused by Wade standing at the stumps.

edit: I'm not using the dropped catch as an excuse either.. plenty of things can happen over 5 days that can swing a result.

Nah no way. Lee and McGrath holding on in the last 4 overs (9 wickets down) to deny the English in 2005 was the best draw I have seen. Fuck I am grateful that I was a uni bum back then and had no issues watching every moment of that series, most nights until 4am or so. We lost, but fuck it was good.

2 crucial moments of the test both involved Wade missed chances (missed stumping Smith when I think he was 40 odd in the first innings) then that dropped chance. Both were tough but the stumping definitely should have happened.

He just did not keep well enough. Missing Pattinson also hurt

I don't have a major problem with him trying something like going up to the stumps to Hilf

But that missed stumping when Smith was on 40 was key, chewed up valuable time and runs, would've been over in 4 days if he didn't fluff that

Well you're assuming that if Smith got out on 40 then everything else that happened in the test would have stayed the same, that's a pretty big assumption!

It's possible it might have sped things up, but you never know. If Wade had dropped a ton of chances then it would be easier to point the finger.

Atherton's 185 n.o at Johannesburg in 1995 was truly epic. 643 minutes, nearly 500 balls. Saved the match.

Faf was unbelievable. Duminy could never have managed something like that.

And I kind of get why the NSC has included Derpson, no other current bowler on earth can destroy a batting lineup the way he can when he is on song. But those days are in and 365... not worth the gamble IMO.

It's going to be a tough match, but I am fairly confident we can get a result on a deck that will be better for bowling than the last two matches.

It might come down to whether Kallis plays or not...

With Pattinson injured, Siddle worn out and Cummins unavailable we could be short in the bowling department.
If Clarke gets less than a century we could be knocked over pretty cheaply I reckon.
But fortunately the saffers are under strength too. Should be another great test...

How the fuck does Johnson get into the squad then suddenly field all the media shite. If he plays I will eat my left foot

Siddle will be right. Bring in Starc. Still don't understand how Jack Bird didn't get drafted in - topped wickets last year and leading again this year...

Yeah Starc and Johnson.

Curious to know, was Warne ever left out of a side for 4 quicks? He was saying in triple m this morning that he would never go into a test without a dedicated spinner. I guess Warner and Clarke can fill that role.

I dont think so. Even on the WACA, Warne still bowled - with average results.

I actually welcome Johnson back. He's not the first cricketer to go through a horror form patch, and work his way back into the team. Hope he rips through them. Australia's bowling attack is much better when Johnson is up and firing.

We can only hope that happens

Johnson was an awesome bowler at his peak. I was one of the biggest supporters of him, always thought he could bounce back and such. But then he just had those horror spells that you could go as far as saying cost us matches.

One thing in his favour is that I don't recall any instances of him getting wickets on no balls

AUSTRALIA'S greatest run-scorer, Ricky Ponting, will retire after the Perth Test against South Africa, ending one of the most distinguished cricketing careers of all time.

Ponting is set to announce this afternoon that he will step aside following his 168th Test, at the WACA starting tomorrow.

The former Test skipper has often spoken of his desire to return to England next year for the Ashes but is understood to have reconsidered after failing in both innings in Adelaide.

Ponting will hold a press conference at the WACA to announce his decision.

The Tasmanian has compiled an astonishing record, scoring 13,366 Test runs at an average of 52.21.

Ponting led Australia to unprecedented success in Tests and one-dayers during his tenure as captain but repeated Ashes failures led to Michael Clarke taking over.

Ponting was dropped from the one-day team but has remained in the Test side as a specialist batsman with disappointing results.

While he dominated Sheffield Shield cricket before the recent Test series, Ponting's struggles against the Proteas attack heaped more pressure on the 37-year-old father-of-two.

sad to see him retire, but it was inevitable.

Right time to leave the game as well.

I will never for his 145 (or whatever it was) in the World Cup final in 2003. Was some of the most amazing batting I have ever seen.

and Sidders and Hilfenhaus rested for Perth.

Very, very ballsy. Not too unhappy to see Hazlewood get a bowl at the WACA though.

Nah we will save that for the end of the test. I would have gotten teary if I saw the press announcement I reckon.

World cup was 140 not out, legendary innings that one.

One of my favourites was the Gabba test of the 2006 whitewashed ashes series. His whole series was great.
