The Bet Mk.III - It's time to end this, once and for all
Once upon a time, I trolled someone and they said something that resonated:

Starting today, I will attempt to lose 20kgs in six months for the third time. The previous two attempts failed spectacularly, and the odds are against me if history does indeed repeat itself.

I am currently sitting at 111.2kg after a weigh-in just over an hour ago. The challengers asked for photographic proof. Here is the shop I found in Town Hall with the weight machine:

And here is the printed receipt it dispensed, a rather sombre reminder that I need to do something:

The terms
I will have lost 20kgs or more at the completion of six months.

If I fail I will pay up to 4 challengers $200 each.
If I succeed I will receive $200 from each of them in the "book fund". For the purposes of these terms, the "book fund" will be an account managed by me to help self-publish the book.

The weigh-in will take place at the same place (or place with similar machine if moved) on the 29th November, 2012.

This thread is merely created to announce the bet and possibly source a fourth challenger.

As suggested by many - smarter and more fit - ITMers, I'll be dragging my fat arse into the Sports & Fitness forum.

In an ideal world, this would be achieved without an announcement, as pointed out by Big Eddie:

This is the part I'm most interested in. He wont be able to abstain from alcohol for 6 months, and nor should he... How many personal training sessions/weight sessions/cardio sessions will you be doing a week.

I agree I need a plan as there's things like a European holiday between then and now that will threaten to derail.

Doesn't need a dedicated S&F thread, but Marshy has now checked in to the weight loss and diet thread in S&F, and we're expecting regular updates from him there, and hopefully in the daily exercise thread too. Whilst it's going to be tough, I don't think it's going to that bad. At 111kg Marshy you will experience noob results ie quick, noticeable results... and if you do all the right things, the shedding of the kilograms, increased strength, and looking better in the mirror will hopefully keep you disciplined and consistent.

Sound advice Loopi, though I'd add, train hard, but don't overtrain and burn yourself out, and don;t go overboard on the diet to a point wehere what you're doing isn't sustainable long-term. The most important thing is to instill permanent lifestyle change and get yourself to a point where you enjoy eating healthily and exercising, so it becomes a permanent change. Quick results are great, but steady, incremental results that are sustainable are better long term IMO, and 20kg in 6 months from Marshy's current weight shouldn't require drastic action, a steady but disciplined approach will get him there with time to spare IMO.

Absolutely. If you work hard for the first couple of months you should be able to smash the first 10kg off in that time, start seeing some noticeable results and start to feel healthier and get used to the changes in diet. At that point you'll hopefully just feel good enough to want to keep doing what you're doing and the rest of the weight will go with time.

Exercise is going to be second fiddle to diet over the next 6 months for this. I reckon even if he just eats clean for the next 6 months, with a low amount of exercise, he would probably still go on to win the bet (not saying that's the right way to go about it). Therefore mental toughness will be tested here - not having that desert at dinners, not buying that chocolate or packet of chips throughout the day at work, not having a sandwich for lunch and think you're eating healthy, etc etc. That's going to be the tough part. Only when he makes choices like those a 'lifestyle change', rather than just going on a 'diet', will it get easier.

He could- but I personally find it a fuckload easier to lose weight by eating satisfying amounts of clean food and exercising than eating fuck-all and not exercising. At Mashy's weight if he exercises he can eat 2000cal/day and still maintain a pretty solid caloric deficit. Plus exercise makes you feel better.

Yeah for sure, completely agree. Just saying that I think in this situation diet is going to be the greatest test of will power. If he can overcome temptation with food and drink then that's more than half the battle won. Combine clean eating with lifting shit, and some cardio I guess (the goal is weight loss), and he'll come out looking great.

Tip for Marshy (sorry Zodiac): grocery shopping every single week should include lots of vegetables, fruit, steak, chicken breast, kangaroo, eggs, tuna, beans/chickpeas(that sort of stuff), almonds/nuts in general, lite milk,. That's all I can think of for now. Don't buy shit foods at the supermarket and you won't eat shit foods throughout the week (this requires not to eat out much and to not buy snacks throughout the day, which if you do now, stop).

Join a gym and get yourself on a contract - the motivation of knowing 40 a fortnight or whatever is coming out of your account can help with not skipping workouts

That doesn't work for everyone tho...

Gym isn't really necessary... I got to where I am so far without stepping foot in a gym.
Reaching your goal and feeling amazing about yourself should be motivation enough to get there.
