Yeah, but all the current algorithmns in use for commercial fitness products don't work that way, it's all based off the very basic bmi/bmr/age data for their calculation assumptions.

I was quite surprised by how shitty it all was, I kinda assumed that people would have cared more about this stuff and as such there would be more dev effort as a result. But really all the market really wants is a number, that fussed about its accuracy.

HR remains a valuable tool for tracking training effort/recovery/training effect but for calorific expenditure it's ballpark at best.

totes agree. my polar monitor expenditure varies wildly to the MYZONE one and again to the one on the machine (although that is based on a 70kg person).

but I love having the HR monitor purely to measure intensity. I went for a light jog the other day at about 5:45/6:00/km and my heart rate was 135. push it to 5:00 and my HR gets to around 165. big difference.
plus its useful to measure your fitness by how quickly it returns to resting HR post workout.

For training stuff HRM is gold, it's crazy to see how quickly my HR drops when effort is reduced now compared to when I started out.

Nah its a bit more hipster than that, its a line from Holocene from Bon Iver, I've total man crush on Justin Vernon at the moment. But yeah, i like the sentiment to the statement, its rather humbling.
