Just got back from Niseko... fucking AWESOME powder! It snowed for 4 days straight! 50cm or so a day, fucking amazing. Better than last years trip!

Who cares about the aussie/bogan factor, the snow at Niseko is worth putting up with that shit!

I was riding with this dude today, who grew up in the Tokyo area, and has been boarding for 10 years. This year, for the second time, he is doing a season in Hokkaido, living in his car and boarding every day. I asked him how boarding in Hokkaido compares to in Honshu and he says the snow up here is much better and lighter. I said going to places like Hakuba is getting more popular for Australians on vacation, so they can spend time in Tokyo. He said that was fine if you just want to spend all of your time in the park.

There isn't that many parks in Hakuba. And even then they aren't that good.

In other news a couple of pics of a friend in Niseko today -

Am kicking myself I chose Canada this year. Japow is getting puked on and Canada might as well be Aust.

Report from friend today is;

Another 15-20cm on our doorstep this morning.
A fair bit colder on the mountain with some wind.
Still lots of pow around if you look for it, even in the trees.
Lots of the goodness has been amongst the trees lower down.

Landed back in Sydney this morning after 7 days in furano + some time in tokyo. Furano was epic, stayed on the mountain so managed to get first lifts 4 days in a row. Lots of fresh, fluffy dry pow every day. Had an awesome time and already planing for next year.
Look at them, ordinary fucking people, I hate them.

I saw what appeared to be a half hour news special on cars getting snowed on last night while in an izakaya. It had animations showing how different pressure levels in different places can cause snow to fall on the coast or in the mountains, there was another that seemed to show that parts of the honshu coast in about the middle on the north side got a meter of snow (in a day I think), and another showing how if you turn your car on to warm up while you dig it out it can fill up with CO2 and kill you.

I am jealous of honshu getting all that snow and being like 10 degrees warmer than it is here, -3? Luxury.

I just won some lift passes for Shiga Kogen in Nagano, only problem is i have to use them before 5/5/10. So a last minute ski trip to Japan is in the works for mid April...

Anyone been? Know any good cheap places to stay? Hints and tips would be greatly appreciated...

Mid april is the tail end of the season. I did get a day with shin deep new powder in late april last year, but its much less predictable.

yeah i know Oblivia, i'd love to get there before that but with work and not having enough money yet i think i'm gonna have to settle for mid april. If the skiing is shit i'll just go see the snow monkeys or day trip to Tokyo...

got back from niseko a couple of days ago, had an awesome week there.

according to the snow reports apparently we didn't get that much snow, but we still had enough for a some awesome powder days. even had a rare blue sky day too, that was pretty nice.

as usual, couldn't be fucked taking too many pics.

already hanging out for next year, will probably check out nazowa onsen as well.

heard from a friend that it rained while she was in hakuba

Hey ITMers,

I'm looking at spending a week or so in a Japanese snowfield as part of a larger Japan trip. Probably in Feburary and probably in Hokkaido (after reading through this thread and other things). DNW little Australia so looking at Furano, Tomamu or Rusutsu. Maybe Hakuba or Nozawa Onsen if it ends up being a lot cheaper to stay on Honshu.

From what I can see Tomamu and Rusutsu both allow off-piste which is basically where I live. Not sure about Furano.

Thoughts, opinions, links and abuse please.

don't let the fact that there's some australians (which i presume you're one of) in niseko put you off one of the best powder expieriences you're likely to come across.

if you're going up to hokkaido it would be silly to write it off completely, if you are heading up that way i'd suggest some time in niseko and some time in furano.

re: nozawa onsen

it's a lovely place, nowhere near as many internationals, cool places to eat on the mountain, but the snow just doesn't compare to niseko.

snow park is lots of fun.

and the snow monkeys are cool but not worth missing an afternoon of powder for.

True true. Not sure i'd be able to fit it in but we'll see. Pretty much decided on Furano, d-vo mentioned on TS that your lift ticket is valid for Kamui as well. From the website it seems you can do Tomamu as well.

I wouldn't do a whole week at Rusutsu. It's a pretty great little resort, but I'd probably do half Rusutsu half Niseko (with a focus on niseko moiwa or back country tours) or half Furano.

Hey fellow snow pigs

I just came back from a season in Switzerland and I always wondered about Japan due to the culture and that deep powder.

How expensive is it? I would prefer to go for 2 weeks to Japan and tail end it with a week of riding. Is it better to go for a package or do to the whole adventure doing it myself?

I can't speak Japanese.

i'm not really sure what your definition of "expensive" is, like with any holiday you can make things a lot more or less expensive by the options you choose when it comes to accomodation and how and where you eat your meals.

and how much you want to go out to go drinking and that sort of thing.

re: package v DIY

you could do a combination of the two, i know skimax just released their earlybird deals for next year, so you could book flights and the ski component of your trip with them (they will do everything; flights, snow accomodation, ski passes, transfers), but the week at the start of your holiday you could just leave as a blank slate, until you figure out exactly where you want to go and what you want to do.

www.skimax.com.au

i have travelled with them before and would do so again if i were to do a "package" type thing again.

i'm jealous

Other Resorts
Fair enough, go to Niseko. It is awesome and you will have heaps of fun. If you time it right which is not that difficult, you will get fresh snow...

But please take one or even two days to ski somewhere else. Rusutsu is easily accessible by bus, as is Moiwa. There are lots of other unique and fun resorts that are accessible by car, so rent one for the day and you might just have to best skiing of your life.

Enjoy!

did Hakuba a few years ago and it was rubbish. I think it just happened to be a really awful season though (had not had snow in weeks and only snowed about 10cm while we were there), so I'm not writing the place off. Otherwise it was an enjoyable trip. Stayed at a great hotel. Nightlife wasn't pumping though... and Japan ain't cheap.
Goyru was particularly crowded and seemed very small, Happo One we only skiied one day because they closed the top it was so windy. Tsugaike Kogen was our pick of the resorts - we spent a few days there.

Niseko is the best place to ski in Japan and once I went there with one of my friend and that was really enjoyable and I prefer you to be once for there.

I think aspect of the purpose so many aussies go to niseko is that there are so many program trips. There are plenty of other locations to panel in Hokkaido, you can go to to Kiroro, Fus, Tiene.

Furano as well, the bus services to Kamui (my personal favourite) and Tomamu make up for their lack of off-piste. Plus the town itself is boss.

Anyway. Just noticed Singapore airlines has 1140 return to Tokyo during Jan/Feb (from Perth). In case anyone wants to jump on that.

Sorry for the late reply. I booked it all myself, travel companies were still about $500 off that price for a place >1km from the lifts. Im 200m from the lifts and right near all the bars and shops in Hirafu.

Only problem with the cheap flights to tokyo is getting to sapporo.
